I use the same principal, only we just called it center. I would only turn my center to point directly at the guys shoulder point. It was a very short shift and yet would take me out of his line of fire and allow me to follow with an instant strike back to his face. The slight shift also allowed more reach with the punching arm. Not much, but some. The slight shift was easier to recover from when following up with the defending hand. You would not have to turn much at all to line it up for a punch.

Instead of calling it centerline, I prefer to call it "front door" (compare to side doors and back door). Also to step in your leg between your opponent's legs and take over his center is also important.

In a cross leg position I'd step in between. In a parallel stance I'd step outside of the leg.
