Cui Xiqi is one of the Shaolin shi da quan shi - the ten great fist masters of Shaolin. He is known for his sickles and is the headmaster of the Songshan Shaolin Xiqi Wuguan. He'll be 90 this year, but I'm not actually sure if he's still alive.

Hey Gene,

He is still alive. I spent all last year training with him. He teaches everyday. He is still very agile. The school is very small, just a few disciples. He, his son and grandson all teach together.

He was 87 I think when this video was taken. Most of my previous masters had trained under him at some point. He was a direct student of LiGenShen and started learning shaolin in the 1930's (had already practised his families KungFu in the 20's). He talks in great detail about theory and application. In my opinion after more than 6 years in DengFeng, he has the deepest knowledge of Shaolin of anyone I have met by quite a large measure.

Here is Master Cui Xi QI performing DaTongBeiQuan

Notice the detail in the transition moves compared to most versions;

All his forms are similarly detailed.

He is still alive.
I've seen him demonstrate, but I've never met him. That's a real testament - teaching every day at 89. Much respect!

I do and teach a lot of classic weapons but I never learned the sickles. They look similar to hook swords.

When we ran the cover story on Shi Dejian in our Shaolin Special 2005 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=590), I posed him with sickles. That was the first interview with him in English. He was pretty reclusive back then and resistant to interviews. I met him when he was living in the right side courtyard with the bamboo and steles. He was guarded with me until I asked him about the sickles, which were lying in the corner of his room. That's when he lit up. He said 'not many people ask about those' and was then happy to speak with me, and showed me all sorts of esoteric practices. Remember, that was 2005, long before the documentaries on him, and no one was talking about Wu Gulun or Dejian's unique take on Shaolin.
