Not to be a pain but that is not an "historical article", it is a story about the history of Jow ga.
A historical article would include citations proving the claims or at least citing sources (perferably independent).

No worries, it's just that it is to easy for us to forget that we are passing on stories and NOT historical facts and what happens is that we end up getting people believing that CMA started in the shaolin temple and that WFH could carry 300lbs in each hand and silliness like that.

That this commonality has "evolved" in different ways over the many generations makes a lot of sense based on what we see even nowadays in MA.

When you state in your above "article", Fu Sheng was one of Lau Kar Leung's favourite to-dai, but didnt study long....what do you mean.

Fu Sheng became Lau si-fu's to-dai in 1973, and was with him almost non-stop for two years in Taiwan, none of this two or three evenings a week...allday filming and training-probably seven days a week....as Hung Gar doesnt have THAT many forms it's not hard to see how Fu Sheng could have learned the Lau family Tit Sin Kuen by 1975-as he demonstrates it in Disciples of Shaolin-Hung Kuen Siu Jai...when Fu Sheng returned to HK in 1976, he resumed training with Lau si-fu who left Taiwan in 1975.

As for length of training, is that a factor considering there is a Hung Kuen "master" in the Czech Republic advertising two week Hung Gar courses that will then allow those participants, who pay a big fat fee???, to return home and teach under their family banner.....now that is a joke!!!

Your statement regarding Fu Sheng's status in the Lau family is also wrong. I have met several of the Lau Gar Ban over the years....and trained with them too...Gordon Liu, Lau Kar Yung and Mark Houghton have all confirmed to me that Fu Sheng was Lau si-fu's favourite and BEST student in his eyes....why else did he stop any teaching for over 6 years when Fu Sheng died???

Mark Houghton, my unofficial kung fu uncle also confirms the above statement regarding Fu Sheng's ranking on a kung fu movie audio commentary.

and what does this have to do with your question?

Chris m
03-07-2012, 03:44 PM
It's about length of training....try and understand what's being said before you jump in...the poster mentions about Fu Sheng not training with Lau si-fu very long...which I dispute...and just mentioned that some Czech guy turns out teachers in a fortnight...do you understand now???

Chris m

Just asking why he is disrespecting the memory of someone by downplaying his training, and asking where is the proof....and you're a fine one to talk about having bones to pick with someone aren't you...

I have heard of Gordon Liu, I think I have heard of Lau Kar Yung (Gordons brother?) but who is Mark Houghton???

CLFNole
03-07-2012, 07:45 PM
Lau Kar Yung is Lau Kar Leung's nephew. Remember Gordon is not blood family but the 'adopted' brother of Lau Kar Leung. Mark Ho (Houghton) is a student of Lau Kar Leung.

I have always heard mixed things about how much or little the shaw brothers actors trained. I love Fu Sheng as an actor but if you watch him perform sets he doesn't appear to a someone that practiced hung gar 7 days a week. I also heard he was Lau Sifu's favorite then again I also heard Siu Ho was a favorite too. Who really knows it was a long time ago.

By many accounts, Fu Sheng was highly intelligent in kung fu and was a natural at it. He very well could have, and probably did train, very extensively, especially in his earlier years with Lau Sifu. He was actually discovered by a Shaw Bros talent scout in around 1971 or '72 in Hawaii, where he was living at the time, while competing in a judo (or karate, I forget which) tournament. Then he was recruited into the Shaw Bros drama school to prepare as an actor. So even before he learned Hung style, he already had a MA background. It's not easy to perform kung fu movements like he did in such a short amount of time.

What many people don't realize is that Fu Sheng was seriously injured in the late '70s. If I remember right, he'd broken both legs and also fell about 10 feet(?) from being suspended on wires onto his head. I had heard that his ability to perform kung fu was never the same after that. That's why his best physical performances tended to be from 1974 through '76 (Shaolin series of films).

I was always a huge fan of Fu Sheng and think he had great presence on screen. Had he not died he would have really become an even bigger star. In terms of hung gar I think Chi Kuan Chun was better in terms of real Kung fu but Fu Sheng outshined him on screen perhaps because of his charisma whereas Chi Kuan Chun was a stiff robot type.

Jimbo

Agreed about Fu Sheng and Chi Kuan-Chun.

Chi Kuan-Chun was a student of Chiu Wai, and I heard he began Hung Gar training around 1961 or so. So by the time he first teamed with Fu Sheng onscreen, he'd been training 13 years. His HG form was far more mature. Fu Sheng was definitely the better actor, and also moved more fluidly. It also looked to me like Fu Sheng kept some of the kicks he might have learned in karate(?).

Supposedly, Fu Sheng was the original choice as the lead for Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, but Shaw Bros would not lend him out for it, so Yuen Woo-Ping ended up going with Jackie Chan. The rest is history.

Just for the poster at the top of the page.

Mark Houghton is an English ex-pat Hung Gar teacher, who learned in Malaysia the older variation of Hung style, he got the chance to go and meet Lau si-fu, the reason he started Hung Gar in the first place, in 1988. Lau si-fu was impressed enough that Mark became Lau's first disciple since Fu Sheng died, Mark learned the Wong Fei Hung Hung Gar then.

As for Mark's acting....acting in Chinese movies is not the real reason anyone watches them is it?? Action is what counts...and Mark was the first gwai-lo to recieve a stunt man's licence from HKSA, and was also assisstant fight choreographer on Drunken Master 2.

More than all that he is a cool guy....who really can use Hung Gar...a genuine kung fu man

From what I've heard about Mark Houghton, he is the real deal and really knows his stuff.

SR,
I kinda have to disagree with you there. Sure, there are (were) a lot of poor actors in old KF movies, who were simply put into movies because of their look/MA abilities. But a number of them could indeed act. Yasuaki Kurata, Fu Sheng, Ti Lung, Sammo Hung, Leung Kar-Yan, etc., come to mind. And not all of their films let them show that. But they've shown they were capable of it if they had to. That's in addition to their natural charisma, which really can't be taught. But these were actors who had some sort of drama training or stage training, etc., except maybe Leung Kar-Yan, who was a complete natural.

The acting style will be different because people in different cultures behave/express differently, even though there's some universal behaviors as well. The trick is that they make it look easy. I study acting, and believe me, it's NOT easy to look totally natural and project well onscreen. People who are good make it look so easy that non-actors think that anyone can do it, but they can't.

Sorry to OP for going so far OT...:)

Hi, I'm a student of Lau family, learning same curriculum Fu Sheng would have. Fu Sheng spent about over a decade training under Lau Kar Leung. It is not unreasonable to think Fu Sheng would have properly been on way to understand tit sin by '75, outside of work besides just showing it. I have been training for just under 3 years & am now learning LKL's tit sin (only through dedicated daily training - have to train hard to live up to this lineage). Fu Sheng learnt Choy Lee Fut from Lau Kar Leung as early as '73: In our curriculum we learn Gung Gee, then Fu Hok, then a seemingly unique variant on Sup Gee from Choy Lee Fut (taught this where other HGK lineages have sup ying kuen), then Tit Sin. Fu Sheng performs start of our CLF sup gee at opening of '73 production Men From The Monastery. I reckon they included it as he was prob working on it at time, fits a training timeframe, Fu Sheng would have learnt full form (LKL does a bit at start of My Young Auntie, & in a TV demo of his main crew) for sure & LKL would have made sure he understood it. Some speculation but it all fits from how I'm taught, His hung kyun fits my understanding of it more than CKC's, somewhat softer. I think the CLF in place of sup ying gives a unique flavor - LKL says his HK starts as HK & progresses towards CLF. Anyhoo, just some stuff...
If you want to see best of Fu Sheng I reckon see My Rebellious Son. It might not bear LKL's direct involvement, but it really does - closest FS showed to stealing his sifu's hands in terms of body mechanics on screen, confirms everything for me, something I haven't seen from Chi Kuan Chun in the same way to fit how we're taught. In those early Chang Cheh form demos FS weren't up to standard with CKC at all, but elements of beginning his approach properly do show. In time he developed something great I feel more in tune with through hard training than CKC. FS's way makes far more sense to me for visual correlation of making my stuff practical, form or otherwise. Fu Sheng worked hard & it shows.

thx, actually i am neither the autor, nro translator - the article was written 60 years ago by a student of Lam Saiwing, Wu Lap Gung/Wu Lap Fung.

Triple Stretch - well, obviously same root, especially the first sections of Triple Stretch. Some of the White Crne versions are even closer to Iron Wire Set. Check out this article of mine:

Great article, I like how you emphasized the need for relaxation, rather than dynamic tension. :)

What are your thoughts on the connection between this set and the Grand Majestic Set, aka Triple Stretch of the Venerable Sam Tuck and Hoong Hei Khoon?

I don't see where he empahized anything...
Sorry.
WHat he said was:

When practicing Tit Sin Kyun, you should seek the stillness within the movement and seek movement within the stillness. You should relax, but not totally. You should be reserved, but not totally. Those are the skillful hand techniques. Moreover, your fast movements should not be sloppy and your slow movements should not be casual. This way you can continue doing the set calmly. In addition, there should be no timidness in your mind and no expression on your face. When you are in a stance, the momentum should look like you are running. Even when there are many thoughts crossing your mind, your soul should be calm. Hard and soft should be combined together in Tit Sin Kyun. Everything should be mid-way. This can correct your posture. If you practice Tit Sin Kyun a lot, then you will attain perfection gradually and eventually get the wonderful benefits.

A nice story about a traitor and why the No.7 isn't used, but this is not the explanation I have been taught. The 'clue' is in the misinterpretation of the language itself...

My HK sifu said the the shadowless kick was so named because of the speed ( it must be so fast as to not have even shadow) AND because the kick was delivered when the opponent was too preoccupied to see the kick ( to bust defending the hands).
It is important to note that the kick is not just a "quick, snap kick to the groin" but a very powerful and very fast kick that can be a "finisher" in of itself.

TenTigers
04-12-2013, 01:25 PM
it seems that everyone has a different definition of mo ying geurk.
My Sifu said it was more the concept of being formless and deceptive, rather than a specific technique.
It also seems that other systems use that term, so perhaps, Guangdon Hung-Gar's mo ying gerk is just that...
who knows, they're all dead...

PM
04-13-2013, 01:48 AM
The kick casts no shadow, as the shadow is provided by the "Shadow Hand" (Ying Sau) - the kick is obscured from the defender's view, ie. "invisible".

Golden Arms
04-15-2013, 09:43 AM
No shadow kick is not rocket science. The hands hide the feet. Lead their mind elsewhere, then punish them with the legs.

Brule
04-15-2013, 09:52 AM
Too often people make more out something then it really is. Just because of the name for the technique, you could have the slowest kick around but if you are great at concealing it and can distract your opponent it's still a 'no shadow kick'.

So basically you are pushing the methodology of Naked Warrior but rewriting it in a southern Kung fu way. You like kettle bells the best? Interesting. It would not have anything to do with Pavel's other book would it? Enter the Kettlebell.

I hear what you are saying. But if you read Naked Warrior it says that book solely focuses on bw exercises for maximum stength gains. However, Pavel does not say to not train anything else except maximum stength. Toward the end he gives ideas on how to combine Naked Warrior with other kinds of exercise. I have the book right in front of me.

Well, i am certified kettlebell instructor as well as bodyweight instructor under Pavel - i know about all the different tools, types of strength/power and their transfer to martial arts a little bit, and not from the book :-)

True Origin of Hung Ga Kyun ‘s Minor Hand Sets

There are many misconceptions about the origin of various „Minor Sets“ of today’s Hung Ga Kyun. Many of the sets are wrongly attributed to Lam Sai Wing or even Wong Fei Hung, other sets were supposedly created by a comittee of Hung Ga masters in 1950’s to enrich the core Hung Ga Kyun curriculum. …Or not?

To paraphrase the late Bruce Lee, „people separate lineages, lineages separate people“. Avoiding the common „who-learned-from-who“ question, this article will briefly analyse the true origin of the commonly known sets like Mui Fa Kyun, Lau Ga Kyun, Wu Dip Jeung and other „Minor Sets” of today’s Hung Ga Kyun.

Good article.
You are quite correct that the "one shot, one kill" is greatly misunderstood.
EVERY shot should have that mentality behind it, every shot should MEAN something.
No wasted movement, no wasted shots.
Typically.
We don't get a lot of chances to hit an opponent, especially a good one, without getting hit back, so we must make every shot that lands, COUNT !

I made a very in-depth study of the IW before and during my time that I was learning it.
From the western scientific point of view.
It is an excellent isokinetic form and directly applicable to combat in the sense that it trains the attributes needed for combat from a Hung Kuen perspective.
I would argue to what degree the sounds directly effect the organs, but to be honest, that would be splitting hairs.
IMO, the IW form is one of the best "tension" forms I have ever done ( and I have done quite a few).

Actually, I did but I have no idea where it is.
On my old PC...

It went into great detail about iso-kinetic tension, valsava maneuvers, core structure, vibrational resonance, etc, etc.

I even had readings of EMG and EKG's from when I did my IW.

interesting little quote tucked into that article

Young martial arts students in the 1950s adopted a particularly puritanical view of Wude (or “martial virtue”) that one suspects would have been quite at odds with the actual lives of most of their heroes in the late Qing and early Republic period.

It's funny how they mention that a "double your body weight squat" is not something to be satisfied with.
For the majority of MA ( and even some regular strength training) a 2X BW squat is something to strive for.
That is a 340 lbs squat for a 170lbs person.

PM
03-23-2014, 05:58 AM
Yes - 2,5xBW deadlift, 2xBW squat, 1,5 BW bench... although I would definitely say DL and BP are more important for fighters than squat. Maintain the squat (Zercher), train the deadlift.

I would ague squat and DL are more important than the BP.
There are many exercises one can do to give the same or better results than the BP, not so much for the squat and DL.

I personaly prefer other exercises than BP (one arm pushup, military press) - BP was included because it gives you the biggest bang for your buck for your upper body strength. BUT (and here is the catch) - not the bodybuilding BP, and not following bodybuilding program. No manboobs.

Correct BP is a full body lift if you know how to do it properly. Of course, without the DL power, flexible hip flexors and the ability to transfer the power form the ground up through core it is useless.

My guys do mainly BP, DL and Full Contact Twist with barbell as the main barbell "Easy Strength" program, with period of Zercher squats instead of DLs. Backsquat has its value, but especially competitive fighter do not want to gain weight (which will exactly happen with BSQ). That is why.

Last but not least - I am talking about strength training. Conditioning is the other important part of the coin, bit it is not what I mean right now guys.

This thread isn't the place for this discussion, but I don't agree with you on much of what you said.
In the 30+ years I have done strength training, my experience has lead me to believe that what you have said is not typical and, if I may say so, misinformed.
EX: Back squats do NOT lead to increase in weight gain, no exercise does directly lead to weight gain. It is the protocols and diets that some follow that may lead to weight gain.
Just saying.

PM
03-29-2014, 03:52 PM
That is why I have mentioned bodybuilding program - I guess I know the difference... As for weight gain all things being equal, back squat is the numero uno for gaining mass, fighters have problems with recovery, and - as much as I love squats (especially Zerchers), for fighters, big pull is always the drill to go - be it deadlift or eg. powerclean.

The rest - see above AND below:

Strength Training for the Martial Arts

Misinformed? Well, apart from martial arts, I am a kettlebell, barbell and bodyweight instructor under StrongFirst (education and strict requirements met, not purchase of a certificate). I actually taught with Pavel Tsatsouline last year in Sweeden (and with Swedish Olympic wrestling strength and conditioning coach, and with UFCs Gustaffsons strength coach), and will teach this year in Italy again

I am also a chief-instructor of major Czech strength and conditioning organization called KB5

My wife is strength and conditioning professional (not fitness, strength and conditioning, ok?), with 200 members in her gym (ladies only) - see here

Just recently I have been asked to take under my wing strength and conditioning for MMA certifications/trainers licenses in our country... So yes, I sincerely hope that what I say is not typical, both in TCMA and fitness community :-) and I can definitely say that I know/can lift a bit :-)

Strength Training for the Martial Arts

http://practicalhungkyun.com/2013/05/strength-training-for-the-martial-arts/

Misinformed? Well, apart from martial arts, I am a kettlebell, barbell and bodyweight instructor under StrongFirst (education and strict requirements met, not purchase of a certificate). I actually taught with Pavel Tsatsouline last year in Sweeden (and with Swedish Olympic wrestling strength and conditioning coach, and with UFCs Gustaffsons strength coach), and will teach this year in Italy again

We can go back and froth with certifications and I can show you mine from various powerlifitng and strength fitness organizations ( not to mention the views of the likes of Rippetoe, Wendler and Poliquin), and all that will mean is that we, like so many others in the strength training business, simply disagree based on our experiences.
No big deal really, different strokes for different folks.

Well said.
I would only add that sport combat systems and fighters KNOW all the dirty tricks of their trade.
Any good boxing coach can teach a bunch of "dirty moves" while you are in the clinch ( like "cuff rubbing") and every boxer is taught how to "accidentally" head butt and thumb the eye with a jab.
As for MMA, we shouldn't forget that it was born of "vale tudo" and under those "rules" everything went and what did we see?
The "bread n butter" techniques that win fight today, won the fight back then too.

Was going to write a quick little review, but then saw this has already been covered above in this thread.

So just say, really enjoyed this little book.
Alot more photos would of been good, but that's just me being greedy.
It was a enjoyable afternoon read for just $10, Only about 50 pages in .pdf format and recommend it.

Maybe he can write an expanded more detailed book version someday similar to Sugong: Nick Hurst,s The Life of a Shaolin Grandmaster.

The amazing thing about the TSK is that every time you do it, you learn something new.
It can also be done a few different ways, depending on what we want to work in specific at any given time in our development.
It is an amazing form, truly.

I got the snake.

SO, what Hung Ga Animal are YOU?

The Snake's nature is more subtle, elegant, and restrained than the Dragon's. Unlike feelings in most Western cultures, a snake in China is considered a lucky sign and often the carrier of good fortune.

You are a very fast and precise fighter - you can redirect the enemy's attack and counter-attack with lightning speed, hitting the most vulnerable points.

I am dragon !!

The Dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. With this, the Emperor of China usually used the Dragon as a symbol of his imperial power and strength.
You are a composed fighter with tremendous internal power - you prefer fight in the clinch, close-range grappling and anti-grappling.
