Japanese **** Scrolls (http://www.tofugu.com/2012/02/18/japanese-****-scrolls/)

I was doing research for another post a while back, and found something a bit…unusual. It was an old Japanese scroll about ****ing.

No, you didn’t misread that last sentence. The whole scroll, which is called He-Gassen (“The **** Battle”) is just about people ****ing. ****ing at other people, ****ing at cats, ****ing off of horses, ****ing into bags; just ****ing everywhere.

Why? I couldn’t really tell you. I’ve tried to do some research but, believe it or not, academic literature on Japanese ****ing is surprisingly few and far between.

I found some relevant articles on my old university’s academic databases, but the only way I could obtain them would be to request them printed out and go pick them up. Which, you know, isn’t something I really want to do.

I can only imagine what it would be like if I went back to school to pick up my **** literature:

“Hi, how can we help you?”

“I’m here to pick up some articles I put on hold.”

“Sure, what are they about?”

“Well, they’re, um, about ****ing.”

“…”

I did find out enough to know that this isn’t the only ****ing scroll out there in existence – in fact, in the 90s, a collection of **** scrolls sold for $1,500 at the famous Christie’s auction house. I am not making this up.

I also found out that the famous uikyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi also dabbled in **** art, painting a piece depicting dudes ****ing at each other.

Perhaps the greatest piece of this ****ing scroll is a giant panorama of four dudes ****ing into a building, and the chaos ensuing within. Click on the picture below for the full-sized version because really, it’s not something you wanna miss out on.

In the end, I think I tried to read too far into this. I kept expecting to find some deep cultural explanation as to why these guys made whole scrolls about ****ing. But I think it really just boils down to one universal truth: ****s are funny.

We can pretend that our senses of humor are more sophisticated than that, but let’s face it: when somebody lets one rip, you’re going to chuckle.

And, as if this wasn’t enough, we made a video for this too. Conspiracy? Maybe. Aliens? Definitely.

(Originally found on Naruhodo. You can find the rest of the **** scroll, in its entirety, on Waseda University’s website here.)

I must admit that I am surprised by the fact that multiple manuals have been written.

universal funny.

...by the way, did you know that your mouth makes the same shape as your anus when you say "poop". This also applies to the phrase "explosive diarrhea"

I hate to generalize, but the Japanese still have a strange fascination for excretory functions. Years ago when I was studying Japanese I was a little disturbed to find cartoons featuring piles of poo and puddles of urine in standard news magazines. I don't get it. But then I never went through a potty humor phase.

On the other hand, Ben Franklin spent considerable effort in publishing f a r t jokes. Maybe they serve a purpose.

A F5 category tornado is nothing but Chuck Norris breaking wind.
A F6 is Chuck Norris breaking wind after a bowl of Chuck Norris level spicy chili.

Do you really fly? I would love to take a crop duster for a rip. Me and my grandfather were gonna build an ultralight but his health got in the way. We did get him up in an old WW2 P40 before he died tho. Put a huge grin on his mug that day.

I'm not sure you understand the colloquial usage of "crop dusting" in the context of this discussion.

I've never really found **** jokes funny. Not sure why.

Why is that censored? It's not an offensive word is it? Not really.

Y'all need an upgrade. Software from the 21st century can tell the diff between bad words and words that have that same lettering within them.
