View Full Version : Jim Uglow...kung fu tourist...not!!

Chris m

I read in a recently closed thread, a user trying to claim my teacher, Jim Uglow, was a kung fu tourist. A term our kwoon coined to describe people who go to HK for a holiday..and return calling themselves si-fu...a worryingly growing trend.

I thought I would join to set the record straight.

My teacher, long before he went to HK to learn from Chan Hon Chung in1985, began Hung Gar in the mid-70's with a private Chinese si-fu, learning one to one 5 days a week-4 hours EVERY morning plus a public class in the evening...

It was his original si-fu who told Jim to go to Chan si-gung in the first place, if Jim wanted the full system...how different from all the si-fus nowadays that cant admit to not knowing everything eh??

Respect to Spencer who stepped into the other "debate, your welcome to our kwoon, coz you are a proper kung fu man...and you're right questioning that guy's maturity....

I don't think anyone here took any of that stuff seriously. Sounded like a guy with an axe to grind, to me.

At any rate, berating people's Sifus, unless they are blatantly involved in criminal or unethical activity, is in poor taste. It's also talking behind someone's back, which is also in poor taste.

Character attack and defend posts are usually regarded as Hokey and lame.

If people can't speak for themselves and can't contain or won't contain their students, then the whole lot wind up looking like a pile of boiled cabbage that's been sitting in the rain.

Just sayin...

Respects to you all too, but I'm not sure I fit the 'proper kung fu man' label just yet lol!! There are some here who would strongly disagree!! :D

I just like to give honest opinion, epsecially when I see negative things being said about somebody in the UK I have actually met and know a little about.

Hey Chris m, I don't suppose you're the guy who wrote into a Uk MA mag, MAI I think a good few years ago perhaps around 2004? No disrespect just interested.

Chris m
02-28-2012, 12:31 PM
Yeah I did write to MAI years ago, bout some cover guy appearing to take the p##s out of Hung Gar, for no apparent reason-was supposed to be their new kung fu consultant and there he was disrespecting another kung fu style....just asked why that was acceptable.

Ps Spencer you sound like a guy, who if he has beef with someone, as the guy who started that other thread clearly does, would walk up to the guy and deal with it man to man...a proper kung fu guy....not an armchair see-thru..

An astute businessman's poor student just challenged me to a fight. Chris Mercer has the biggest mouth.

He visits HK here and there throughout the year (a tourist) brings back things he has learned in HK. Charges his students to learn those forms/ideas. Has his name attached to schools in 5 countries. He sells DVD's of the forms he learned in HK. Oh, I forgot he also charges for seminars!!! And you have the balls to call others astute businessmen? Pot calling the kettle black.

He now has a Forum in his name while his students try to make a name for themselves by attacking others.

And now shows videos of the Lau family correcting his teachers teachings!!! Not jealous one bit Mercer. Just tells me that you needed proper training from the start. True Orthodox training huh? Lets bring in another lineage for 'variations'. What a joke from a pathetic coward.

You are a black eye to the martial arts.

Here is a post by Chris Mercer - Popsjnr (Zappones running dog) challenging me to a fight who challenged who??? I did not run away. There you go skewing the facts like you do with everything else. What a COWARD.

Oh Wodger you get so angwy dont you...poor baby dont cry!! Does your nappy need changing have you **** YOURSELF??
Dont like the replies dont send me emails then you ****ing *****.? Who the **** do you think you are?? If you want trouble you **** come to our club and i will spark you out!!

He challenged me to a fight at his school in England but refused to purchase me a flight and room and board. Coward. OOOHH MERCER you are so brave...NOT

"Internet challenges are purely for chicken shiet poosies. that is all." HAHHAHHAHHAA Mercer is a CHICKEN SHIET. (this was on the comments of this video, but they removed all the comments, didnt want to make the school look bad with their shiny new forum)

seems to me there's alot of NUTTS in this peanut gallery. People who issue internet challenges instead of just showing up at their school and handle things like real martial artists give martial arts especially kung fu a black eye.

Spot on snipsky...

**** as for my teacher charging for lessons and seminars (SHOCK HORROR)...does your teacher charge for these or does he give it away free???if the answer is...yes he charges....what is your point??? Grow up....your pathetic rants about my teacher on various forums just demonstrates what a little nerd you are.

Ha I knew it! What a guess. I remember the MAI issue that you wrote into. It was when the mag was announcing that they had a Kung Fu advisor / consultant column writer or whatever and it was Shabir akhtar.

I remember you saying something like aren't all these Kung Fu guys all Wing Chun 'aren't they all' I quote. Also you said you'd been studying with Jim Uglow for a couple of years and that 'we won't take it any longer' I quote whatever it was that you were talking about. No disrespect but I liked the reply to your letter from the MAI mag I quote 'on the contrary Chris, the man is the style'. I thought that was a good answer.

I have the mag somewhere, don't suppose you want to buy it? Bet you can't get it from back order from anywhere.

I recall him being a TKD Instructor and Champion before learning Wing Chun from Sifu James Sinclair?? Wasn't impressed that he was 'chosen' for the job at hand either at MAI but I'm rarely happy with any magazine these days :o

Not sure about the TKD stuff but could be right. Not sure also if he learnt from Sifu James Sinclair. That guy was fast and as you probably know has a good rep. Shabbir Akhtar was at least certified in WC under Sam Kwok I think. Also under Jeremy Lau Lau Gar although I hear there's a load of politics involved there. I guess 2 systems for Kung Fu and his other experience isn't bad to say the least. Not sure how long he was doing that job in MAI. Maybe he isn't Ip Man but how many others are?

As always! But you're correct too as he is currently representing Sifu Kwok and Ip Ching according to some sources.

I feel I should re-state that I understand where Chris m is coming from because I wouldn't expect someone like this to be representative of the entire spectrum of Chinese Martial Arts. That's a hard job, and I would prefer to see someone who can sit on 'neutral ground' rather than attached to a particular system.

Maybe even the posturing Shabir was doing in his photos were of Lau Gar and not Hung Kuen?? Then again, I have also heard many negative things about the infamous Jeremy Lau!! Not that I judge anyone without meeting them myslef...

Networking is a special skill my friend and you should at least give it a go imo. There is practically NO representation of Hung Gar in the UK as you know, and I for one would love to see it revived.

Even if it's not in a demo format, but on the mats in Sanshou, Hung Gar IMHO SHOULD be represented in some way...

The Hung Gar kwoon in Liverpool is run by students of the late Jimmy Chan, also si-baak to our kwoon, Chan si-baak gave my teacher a lot of support when he was starting out.....same roots. I'm not sure about Scotland, but there are plenty of Hung Gar kwoons in London....Lau and Lum Jo lineages are represented...

As for tournaments we used to enter, but always got disqualified....so we stopped bothering....occasionally we demo at SENI, but I always try to miss it coz its not my thing.....and I am crap and dont want to put people off their lunch...

There are several lines that came from Jimmy Chan in Liverpool. Some more well known than others. Apart from George Ho who was partly via Lum Jo? I never met Jimmy Chan but heard from several sources that he was a good man.

My only problem with that MAI guy wasn't to do with a teacher from one particular style talking about all different Chinese styles, having spent some of my youth-long ago now-practising both Wing Chun and Lau Gar nearly eight years combined, I think it would've been a good idea for him to do it...my problem with it was this...WHY, if you are supposedly a "kung fu consultant" would you have two magazine covers-the Hung Gar pose and then a Tai Chi posed cover with the look of a guy taking the p##s???...my teacher rang the MAI editor after the 2nd cover....coz that was both styles he loves and teaches (yes for money..shock horror mcpeanut) seemingly being dissed....if your a kung fu consultant show respect to kung fu.

Go to the part 07.25 onwards on the time. Who's he talking about? Chris Crudelli from Mind, Body and Kickass moves? Was on about that time in '07 I think. Ironically on the same web page there was an Amazon advertisement for Mind, Body and Kickass moves if I'm right?

Sorry about the link being off, it should work now.

Great question. Now to wait for a reply. What was that Mercer? Playing secretary again for your astute businessman teacher of yours? You are nothing in the martial world. You are just a lowly student with poor skills.

Chris, you are the FAKE kung fu man with no skills. Zappones video was a joke. He has NO kung fu. HAHHAHHA. You have NO status in the KFu world.

Your forum is the biggest joke on the web. It just shines a **** poor light on your school and makes your teacher look bad as he allows your continued slander. Its you and a few others that are trying to cause a rift between lineages. I am tired of hearing you slander Lum Jo and all his students.

Why did you slam your teachers Si Hing then remove the slanderous posts in your forum? HAHHAHAA, more things you need to hide and skew. The truth is out there and your forums prove to the world that you are nothing but pathetic whiners. Good riddance.

Eh Mercer, remember when you wrote this on the comments of the below video? No wonder your school removed all the comments... Pathetic cowards.

i aint going to run after you, you want a beating come to the school and then after i batter you, my teacher can give you medical assisstance. If you like hanging around parks thats coz its where you take it in your ass isnt it?
Let ne know when you summon the courage to come to the school you continue to impune and i will give you directions to get there....if i can stop laughing? at a fake "kung fu" joke like you!!
bye bye twat.

I cant get it to play...but if someone doesnt rate Crudelli so what.....I never heard of him before that series or after the second series..I didnt like either one but as he didnt pose on any covers taking the **** out of Hung Gar he is on no consequence to me...
the guy states below that my teacher has burned his last bridge in HK....not true there is no problems with the family, Lee Yun Fook is coming to our kwoon in June (would he come if bridges had been burned mpeanutt??)....but why if your talking about that other student did he suddenly fly off to HK for the first time in 20 years, make a fuss about a family dinner, the one that happens monthly anyway?

plays fine for me.

Here is a interesting read from POPSJNR- Mercer as he attacks his teachers Si Hing. POPSJNR - Chris M wrote a couple threads about this on their forums but that have been deleted. He also states his teacher went to HK late Nov and was working on those family statements that promised. Looks like their attack backfired as no family statements were ever and will never be produced as they just burned their last bridge with HK. Not to smart on their part. (this is the thread that got POPSJNR - Chris M banned from their forums twice thus setting the foundation for POPSJNR - Chris M's own forums. The one they post their grievances that nobody cares about. on the page of the link, take note of what a certain classmate of Chris M writes on his You Tube channel. Its the same gut in the video above.

http://naamkyun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=888

Chris Mercer wrote a long diatribe about this thread in his forums. A week later it was taken down and hidden from the world. He was instructed by his teacher not to slander his teachers Si Hing so POOF it vanished. Too bad he cannot wipe clean the posts on the forum. Where is the family statement he was whining about? He just simply cannot provide one and therefore removed the slanderous post. Plus it made his teacher loose face.

Cool, lets see those family statements finally. Signed, stamped dated and original documents when your visitor arrives.
