I would like to find an instructor for this style in Portland, Oregon. However all I am seeming to find in my internet searches are individuals focusing on health/qigong aspects. I would like to see if anyone here can possibly refer me to someone with a more martial focus.

If so thanks, if not, thanks anyway!

I don't know if you are still looking but... There is a Jook Lum Grandmaster in Portland and he also teaches Tai Chi, Hsing-I, Bagua and I-Chuan. I don't know his reputation in Hsing-I but his reputation in Jook Lum is very high. Good luck!

I just joined this board and am also in Portland, OR.

The PDX martial arts scene is kind of weird. There's an former Olympic gold medalist teaching TKD, a bunch of BJJ/MA schools (the current fad), a lot of McDojo strip mall schools, and a few small places.

Some that I'm aware of:

If you do decide to pursue distance learning (as mentioned above) and find a good program, please drop me a line about it, as I have a free directory of DL programs: http://www.BlackBeltDL.com

Try yiquan here:

I have no experience of this teacher but yiquan is a great shortcut to the essential parts of hsing yi quan

So I did make a connection with a xing yi teacher finally. Some time ago I tore my shoulder up in judo, started training again, re-injured my shoulder two more times and then subsequently took a forced break from training. My shoulder is still pretty jacked up, but I am going to start training again pretty soon in xing yi. and perhaps bagua. i do not know at this point if i will be returning to judo or not. if I do i am going to be waiting until my shoulder is much stronger. I decided to finally commit to the internal route and focus on health and wellness with qigong and xing yi at this point. the great thing is the school is directly across the street from my new office. got a promotion and moved to a new office in december. things just seemed to line up and i ran into the teacher and got the details. i believe application oriented!!!!!

I'm also in Portland. It is a great place for the hippie/dippie tai chi and crazy chi kung.

The only thing I can add is that there is a place called "seven star kung fu" on MLK that does free qiqong and accupuncture/tui na clinics. I can't speak to their martial arts but they say they teach bagua, xingyi, etc...

I just sprained my elbow doing Judo about 2 months ago, tendonitis (self-diagnosed), but it's on the mend.

I've been out of training for a while, but now I'm training here. It's a great place. The instructor is knowledgeable, capable of teaching well, and is an all around cool guy. He also has a medical clinic just down the street. At this point I'm just training the xingyi. I'd recommend Sean Orlando (the instructor) if you are looking for a good place to train. I've re-injured my shoulder a couple times since I originally messed it up with a rotator tear, and the training here has been great therapy. 70 bucks a month gets you to access to all classes. thtats a great deal, plus as a student you get a half off discount on medical treatments. A+
