It worked because it was unexpected. He will only be able to get away with that once or twice then everyone will be prepared for it.

But it certainly is awesome to watch!

He can have other surprises up his sleeve- I believe he made it on the Olympic team.
No fluke- he had good control of the details...balance and timing.
