Nelson can take a beating better than most people in the game today. He has true 'iron head' skills :D

i never knew this about big country though, from the fights of his ive seen its never been highlighted.

pretty cool stuff, thanks for sharing.

Although, I like Big Country, he's gonna get killed. This kid is too athletic and too hungry to let Big Country off the hook. I didn't know BC was into Kung Fu...interesting, makes me appreciate the big fella a little more.

This heavy weight card should be interesting...not sure if the action will be there that you get in lighter weight classes.

hes definately not a 'shaolin fighter' in terms of material and technique, but he is a fighter who attributes a portion of his success to his time spent at shaolin. in spirit he carries a portion of shaolin with him.

"I was a completely different person. If I took those 2 months out of my life, the Dan Hardy that is here today would be a totally different person. First off, I wouldn’t be here talking to you. I wouldn’t be fighting in the UFC."

You have to give Lindsey credit, compared to Roy she actually stays active for the whole round.

hands up who has actually spoken to Dan here.....watched his fight camps.....trained with him?
people say lots of things in interviews, he is a fighter period to claim him as a shaolin fighter greatly diminishes his real teachers and coaches

maybe next time you talk to him you can ask him specificaly if his time at shaolin helped him in anyway that he is thankful for. experiences like that dont die easily.

helping or having an influence does not make him a shaolin guy, im sure he is thankful for lots of things he is a very religious guy, im also sure he is thankful for his TKD background as a kid, but that does not make him a TKD fighter

I am looking forward to the Frank Mir vs Dos Santos fight...Frank is another one of my favorite Heavy Weights and will be a good match up vs Dos Santos.

I do want to see a Cain Valasquez/Dos Santos rematch...

I always like to cheer against the Brazilians.

He fought Dos Santos' fight, I thought the leg kicks might have a been a good way to soften him up for a take down, Mir just didn't have enough defense or strong enough chin to make it work. I'm sure its ez to root against Mir, he likes to run his mouth.

I don't follow UFC so it was a surprise when I showed up to train at our school and he was there filming that promo. He has a black belt in BJJ so he's much more of a jiu-jitsu guy but got his start and some of his ethos from Sigung Steven Baugh. I would love to see him doing Tun da :)

I've known about the Lohan school for ages as two of my disciple brothers set up in Vegas (a long story which many of you know already) however I've never interacted with the Lohan school.

Roy “Big Country” Nelson’s years of Shaolin kung fu training paid off once again as he put Dave “Pee-Wee” Herman down on the canvas for a first-round, 51-second TKO victory earlier tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

In Kirik Jenness’ article for MixedMartialArts.com, Nelson talks about his kung fu roots:

"The Lohan School of Shaolin, I actually got started in my Sifu's garage. I think I was 15 1/2, 16. Kung fu is the root for I would say 95% of all martial arts. I practice it every day."

The Lohan School of Shaolin, based in Las Vegas, offers lessons in various styles of kung fu.

About Shaolin Kung Fu

According to the Shaolin Gung Fu Institute, the Shaolin order of monks was founded around 540 A.D., by the Indian Buddhist priest Bodhidharma (Tamo in Chinese) who traveled to China to seek audience with the Emperor.

There he ended up teaching monks physical exercises patterned after "the movements of the 18 main animals in Indo-Chinese iconography (e.g., tiger, deer, leopard, etc.)." Thus began Shaolin kung fu.

"The Shaolin temple was threatened by traveling bandits and wild animals were an occasional problem, so the martial side of the temple probably started out to fulfill self-defense needs. After a while, these movements were codified into a system of self-defense."

Nelson attests to kung fu’s effectiveness in enhancing his grappling and striking skills. He also gives the ancient martial art system credit for developing mental toughness.

Now this is an athlete's body! Sans the mullet, I know Gene misses his. My favorite part was him shaking his belly on top of the cage after the win. Hilarious. I couldn't find a pic of that.
