Here are some of the various soundtracks that have been lifted for 1970s to early-'80s kung fu films. Some of the tracks that were lifted may be from a particular soundtrack but may not be included on the link. I will also name *some of* the films parts of the soundtrack were used for. Aside from their being lifted for KF films, they are also simply good soundtracks in and of themselves. Hopefully this won't be seen as OCD. :) I just happen to like music.
Anyone feel free to post more, as there are some I hope to discover.

Nice posts, guys!
A Joyful Proces,
Witchfinder General and mob violence are especially great finds. I heard
Wg in countless Shaw films, and always wondered where the end fight music in 8 Diagram Pole Fighter came from.
Mickey,
Good one, too. Don't worry; nobody is out of their league here. It's all about enjoying and sharing!

Hey Jimbo! Thanks for establishing a KF movie soundtrack thread. Lots to listen to! I myself am a composer/musician and have recorded two 5 minute soundtracks that would fit in well with a film score (most of my compositions and instrumentation are not Eastern). The software setting on the site here will not permit a link to my music post due to the "root" word in the sound engineering site domain where my music is stored on the net. I could send you this via e-mail perhaps, if interested. :)

Hey, glad you're enjoying the thread, PalmStriker!
Sounds cool, I would like to hear it sometime, if there is a way to do so privately...(I'm a pretty low-tech guy when it comes to computers/iPad).

Greetings Jimbo,
That scene in #85 reminded me so much of the beginning of the 5 Venoms that I was expecting to see each the Venoms doing their thing. There were also sound bites, if not complete lifts of stuff taken from the Night Stalker (Darren McGavin) that were also used in the 5 Venoms.

Hey, Mickey.
Yes, that scene is a bit like the beginning of 5 Venoms. Interestingly, I often felt that Chang Cheh sometimes adopted some very slight horror influences in some of the Venoms films. Some of the scores or cues used, whether from the DeWolfe music library or borrowed from other movies, were a little bit eerie, and worked well in the context of the films.

Stand On Your Own
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsyYeJvc5Z0&sns=em
I know this isn't a lifted track. I briefly debated whether to include it, then decided what the heck.
One of the reasons I started this thread is also because of the memories that music in movies evokes, either through association with the original film/show/album, etc.; or through their being lifted and used in KF films. The practice of using lifted music in KF films started around the late 1960s and basically ended by the mid-'80s, though it still occurred at least a bit into the late '80s. I'm sure that this song will bring back memories for some, especially those who were around and saw NRNS in the '80s. I know it does for me.
NRNS could be considered an "American kung fu movie", as it followed the same conventions as many of the KF films, i.e., the mediocre martial artist who is humiliated and must train hard, usually with the aid of specialized equipment, to face a seemingly unbeatable villain. Cheesey it may be, but I always liked this movie, and this song. Either in spite of, or because of this cheesiness, I always enjoyed NRNS much more than The Karate Kid and Rocky IV...movies whose markets it was clearly attempting to appeal to.
NRNS has some other KF movie connections; the film company was Hong Kong-based Seasonal Films, which produced Secret Rivals I & II, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, etc., etc. Also, it was the first U.S. film work by director/choreographer Corey Yuen (Yuen Kuei).

For its release in Western countries, The Big Boss's soundtrack was re-scored so the music would have greater appeal for Western audiences. For this purpose, The Peter Thomas Sound Orchester (orchestra) was asked to create a new soundtrack, which was done very successfully. IMO, it's much better than the original music. Although Peter Thomas was still never credited with the re-score in the opening credits. These are only a few of the tracks.

This isn't quite a Kung Fu film. It's an old HK gangster flick by Wong Kar Wai, his directorial debut, no less. As Tears Go By (1988) features a Cantonese version of Take My Breath Away by Berlin from Top Gun (1986). The chorus is in English but the rest is redone in Cantonese.
Jimbo, my compliments on a very amusing thread you've got going here. It's taken me this long to find something to contribute that you haven't already covered, and even then, it's not quite Kung Fu.

I know it has been a while.
I am just stopping by to say that the creation of a couple of MP3 cds or Atrac with an information booklet would find an audience. A CD ROM might even work. You have done all of this work. Why not get paid for it?

Hi, mickey,
It's been a while...hope everything is going good for you. I would actually have to learn how to do that. I'm probably the lowest-tech person I know at the moment. Another issue is, I couldn't legally sell the music, since I don't own any rights to it. Not sure how that would work out.

And countless others...
...however, I haven't been able to locate that track on u-tube yet. Those who are very familiar with Shaw Brothers films will probably know which track I'm referencing by hearing the similarities in parts of this one.

136 - Ninja in the Dragon's Den
Main Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLmDcZM7L44&sns=em
This is actually the film's original theme. This movie was a Seasonal Films production (which preceded No Retreat No Surrender by 4 years), and was Corey Yuen's directorial debut. It was also the debut of Conan Lee, and Hiroyuka Sanada's first Chinese movie. In fact, Hiroyuki Sanada was a BIG factor in the movie's success; he was a highly popular teen idol at the time, not only in Japan, but in Taiwan and probably HK and other Asian countries as well, especially with the girls. He was also a protege of Sonny Chiba. NIDD was actually a Seasonal/Toei co-production, and filmed in Taiwan.
Sanada has since moved far beyond the teen idol designation and the MA movie genre as an actor. Unfortunately, many Westerners, if they are familiar with him at all, usually only remember him from Ringu, The Last Samurai, and Rush Hour 3, and Lost, far from his best works.

Hey, glad you like the thread! :)
I've always had a great fascination for the former practice of using lifted music in those classic KF films. Not only lifting the tracks, but often using them very well; in a *few* cases, the borrowed soundtracks even fit the KF films as well as or better than the original movies, IMO.

150 - True Grit (1969)*
*An addition to entry #49.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf986qOCCFE&sns=em
There was a soundtrack album featuring at least some tracks that weren't actually heard in True Grit, entry #49 (Chen Lee and the General) being only one example. It was mainly those tracks on said album that were used in kung fu films. Unfortunately, most of those alternate tracks aren't on u-tube at the moment.
The soundtrack suite presented here contains music actually used in the film. There are a couple of tracks, one of which is a very brief bit, that are heard, in alternate versions, in KF films. The first twenty seconds at the very beginning, and then from approximately 6:50 to 9:50, are heard in their alternate versions in:
Monkey Fist, Floating Snake

The theme for:
Goodbye, Bruce Lee: His Last Game of Death
This is a great BL tribute video. As far as the song goes, it always made me laugh when I was a kid. It's a special kind of cheesiness, and because of that, it retains a silly type of charm that could only have come from the '70s. You could say it's so bad it's good. It's a UK song, but I used to have the impression it was recorded in New York for some reason.

This track is (IMO) the best one from this movie, and is a perfect example of where a film's musical score surpasses the movie itself. Although not really an "old-school kung fu film", Dragon: TBLS is also an example of things going the other way...it is a martial arts-themed film, and parts of this track were later used in the original trailer for Forrest Gump, as well as televised sporting events.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z66YxLygpro&sns=em
A slightly different version of this is heard in:
A Book of Heroes
The original soundtrack to the movie was by Nino Rota, but it was Henry Mancini's rendition of Love Theme that topped the U.S. charts in 1969. The version heard in A Book of Heroes may be (a later version?) by either one of them, or by somebody completely different.

This is the only original example of this track I could find on youtube. Unfortunately, it's cut short, only going from 0:00 to 1:33.
This theme is also heard in:
Night Orchid (a.k.a., Faster Blade, Poisonous Darts)
Not coincidentally, both the Chor Lau-Heung TV series and Night Orchid starred Adam Cheng.

Greetings, hellknight.
The name of that track is "Cotton's Dream' from the movie Bless the Beasts and Children. But it's more famous as 'Nadia's Theme' from the 1976 Olympics, and the theme for The Young and the Restless. Check out entry #105 in this thread.

Glad to be of help, hellknight.
To clarify, although that was post #82, the entry number is 105. I put the entry number before the original movie or song title at the upper left-hand corner (at this point, the most recent entry # is 251).
