Does anyone know, historically, where did the term "kati" come from?

I heard it was either Chan Kwok-wai or Li Wing-kai who created it. Anyone know who it was and why they chose "kati" to describe "Chinese Martial Arts forms"?

I have no idea too, must have been one of the two you mentioned. But I'm guessing probably Li Wing Kay since he trained some japanese styles maybe it came from the japanese word "kata".

My Sifu was from Brazil and the names of forms and all that stuff was all mixed up. When I was in Brazil I thought it was more of a melting pot than america!(that's a good thing)

Xebs, yeah, that was what I tought too, hopefully they will change that eventually.

Shaolindynasty, you've been to Brazil huh? Where? What did you think of the experience?... is your name Chris Childs?

Yep that's me. I went there in August of 99. The people are really friendly there. I went to Rio De Janero for about 1 week and Juiz De Fora for 1 week then back to Rio for 2 days. While I was there I practiced Capeoria and had my first Batizado. I LOVE Suco De Larajia(sp? orange juice)and Gudana(sp?). On a scale of 1 to 10, over all as a country, Brazil gets a 9(The air in Rio is really dirty so they lost a point)

That's where I'm from, in a neighborhood in the "Zona Norte" called Tijuca. Yup, the "suco de laranja" seems to taste better there and you can get "guarana' " in a supermarket off of Fullerton called "Pepes II" ;)

I thought that was you, didn't you post on Shifu Patterson's board once about the USCKF? Did you get the info you wanted?

I'm from Rio.

If you have any other questions on the USCKF, you can contact me, I'm the North Region Director for the USCKF (Illinois is part of my region). I live in Wisconsin.

Cool. How exactly is that done? Is their still tournaments for each state or region then the national?

The Nationals are open to all and USCKF members can compete for spots on the US Team. I'm currently working on the possibility of creating a "regional" for our area, unfortunately organizing is the hardest part and I just assumed the seat last year, so please be patient. :)

The USCKF works hard on putting together a great National event, every other year the National is also an International Championship. There's usually quite a few Brazilians there led by Li Wing-kay (President of the BCKF and Vice of the PCKF), including one of the greatest Kuoshu fighters I've seen in a long time, Wanderley Lucas, the man is awesome, very inspiring to watch.

If you ever have a chance you should go, it's held on the last weekend in July. If you would like I could send some info to you and your Shifu. :)

Thanks I'll email you my address assuming you are not talking about email, if you are send away. My Sifu used to belong to the USCKF but his membership ran out and he is retiring and leaving me as head instructor. I would like to register as a school. I would love to have closer tournaments Maryland is really far and it gets expensive! Keep up the good work and I'll send that email right now. Wait I just relised that I need your email address.

So your Shifu has moved back to Brazil?

Shaolindynasty

No he didn't move back but he is way to busy with his muscle therapy center to teach and sense I am his "right hand man" in Kungfu he has me teach. Actually I teach his son which is kind of strange.

actually it's not strange at all, in Brazil there's a saying "santo de casa nao faz milagres" ("household saints don't make miracles")... I have my daughter study with my top student as well. as a piece of advice, don't teach your spouse or girlfriend, have someone else do that.

So I guess thats normal then. I just feel funny seeing as I am teaching him when his own father is MY teacher, but the reasoning does make sense. I sent the email
