What are you doing for the Mayan Apocalypse?

I've been invited to two parties already. Everyone wants a martial artist who can handle a Monk Spade (http://www.martialartsmart.com/45-84cs.html)* in their post-apocalyptic posse. Kung Fu been bery bery good to me.

Safe Haven from the Mayan Apocalypse? Sorry, We’re Closed (http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/12/05/safe-haven-from-the-mayan-apocalypse-sorry-were-closed/)
By Sorcha PollakDec. 05, 20121 Comment

Do you fear the apocalyptic end to humanity scheduled for Dec. 21? Well, there may be hope: a safe haven from the fast-approaching Armageddon in the form of a small, tranquil village in the south-west of France named Bugarach.

Unfortunately, it’s now closed.

For reasons that still aren’t entirely clear, several websites that have been trumpeting the coming end of the world have also named Bugarach the only place on earth that will be saved on Dec. 21st. When the town’s mayor, Jean-Pierre Delord, was alerted to this fact two years ago, his first reaction was not to rejoice in the knowledge that he and his townspeople would be spared the apocalypse but to order special security measures and plans to shut down the village in preparation for a deluge of news agencies, esotericists and Doomsday cultists.

It has been widely reported in recent years that ancient Mayan calendars predicted that the world would end on Dec. 21st, 2012. According to National Geographic, it is true that the Mayan “long count” calendar, which spans around 5,125 years, will reach the end of its cycle in December of this year. Dec. 21st will see the end of the 13th Bak’tun, which represents the end of an old cycle and the beginning of a new one. And while everyone from NASA to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson are insisting that this doesn’t mean the end of the world any more than December 31, 1999 meant the end of modern computing, people across the globe are preparing for Armageddon. However, the question as to why the inhabitants of this tiny French village will survive unscathed remains unanswered.

So why would the inhabitants of this tiny French village be spared? Nicolas D’Estienne d’Orves, who recently released a book on Bugarach titled The Village of the End of the World, explained in a documentary on the life of the villagers that it has been “impossible” to get to the bottom of the Mayan Bugarach rumor. Why this town? Why in Europe? “It was grabbed on to because this is a place where there’s nothing, so you can easily project your fantasies on to it. It’s like filling a balloon with air,” says the French novelist.

Bugarach is located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. This sleepy hamlet of 176 residents has always attracted people with more “esoteric beliefs,” Delord recently told the Guardian. For years this area of southern France has been known for folklore and magic as well as plenty of conspiracy theories. “It’s all about the mountain,” says Delord.

He’s talking about the 4,300-foot tall Pic de Bugarach, which towers over the village. It is known locally as the ‘upside-down mountain’ due to the lower layers of rocks that are inexplicably younger than those at the top of the peak. The flat-topped mountain is also reported to emit strange gurgling sounds, which has probably helped make it a prime UFO-spotting site as well. Many actually believe the mountain contains an “alien garage,” writes the Telegraph, where extraterrestrials are waiting in a massive cavity beneath the rock for the world to end.

Delord fears that many of these Doomsday believers are planning to descend upon his small hometown in the coming weeks in an attempt to avoid what they believe is mankind’s imminent demise. Already, the numbers of hikers climbing the mountain have jumped from 10,000 in 2010 to 20,000 in 2011, writes the Guardian. So as to be completely sure of the locals’ safety, the mayor has made the decision to shut down the area to tourists for the four days prior to Dec. 21st. Meanwhile, the French government has put the anti-cult watchdog agency Miviludes on the case so as to head off any apocalyptic group activities or possible mass suicides, such as those which were carried out by the Order of the Solar Temple in the Alps between 1994-97.

Some of the locals in Bugarach are still happily taking advantage of their new worldwide fame. One local winery has an end-of-the-world vintage on sale, while a local man is renting out his home for up to $1,600 a night. “I possess a rare asset, the land of immortality,” the landowner proudly told the French newspaper Depeche du Midi.

* Actually, I never learned Monk Spade (http://www.martialartsmart.com/45-84wu.html), but I worked on the DVD (http://www.martialartsmart.com/dvd-yr001.html) and the cover story (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=1042), so I can fake it. I love how everyone I know is so stoked for a zombie apocalypse, when none of them have any of the skills required to survive. I mean, I know it's just a fun fantasy, but stop saying you'll be one of the survivors, when you can't shoot, can't fight, never spent a night in the woods, have no survival skills and haven't even begun stockpiling food and ammo.

True story, I took a friend of mine up to camp to shoot guns once, he had never done it before...he was actually dumbfounded that he was a bad shot...grown man, in all seriousness, said to me, "I assumed I would be a good shot because I am on video games." Really???!! He's a smart guy too, but people actually assume the mechanics of operating a rifle will be the same as pushing buttons on a controller!

I shouldn't be surprised though. I can't begin to tell you how many people think they can hang in the ring with a trained fighter, when they've never done full contact sparring.

speak for yerself. I grew up in northern Michigan where schools consider Nov 15th (1st day of rifle season/deer) a holiday and give the day off.

Rabbit and squirrel taste the same.

Turkey's are really stupid until you actually try to hunt one.

It takes a lot of bullets to bring down a raccoon which an uncle pays a bounty for because they kill chickens.

And contrary to magazine ads... small knives are better for hunting knives because they're easier to work with to gut a deer.

Really? It's a lot of work to present it here. Not really worth going through the trouble for a thread. It has nothing at all to do with comparing calendars and watches.

But they did predict the coming of the Spaniards and the fall of their civilization to them. In many places they complacently let it happen.

They also had calendars that were the length of human gestation, the path of venus, the galactic calendar (the one that is ending), solar calendars and lunar calendars.

They are still here, but their civilization and way of life has been pretty much destroyed.

If you really want to know, you'd crack a book or two. Also, not a Terrance McKenna book. lol There is no definitive piece of writing that says "we end on this date", but they did know the ramifications of what was happening to them during the conquests and therefor saw their imminent demise.

No that's not true.

Tenochtitlan was thriving when they arrived, so was Tulum, Chichenitza, Tikal, Palenque and several other cities in the Yucatan.

There was devastating crop failure between the 6th and 8th centuries ce which caused the move north between the 6th and 13th centuries. This drought effected the whole world and contributed to the fall of Rome as well.

North and Central America was an entirely linked continent in many respects with trade and so on. This is something that the various institutions don't broadcast though it is fairly well known.

Word. Nothing mystical about any of this. It's just math and common sense. Something that seems to be lacking in these arguments of doom. Credit needs to go where credit is due and their mathematical and mapping skills were nothing short of amazing considering the other aspects of their culture that today we would consider a hindrance to foreword progression.

Mayan Calendar Discovery (http://www.edgarcayce.org/are/blog.aspx?id=6705&blogid=445#.UMYxOsgsPOw.facebook)
By John Van Auken

Archaeologists have found the underground chamber of an official Mayan calendar chronicler! And what his inscriptions reveal is that there is another Age following the present "Age of Movement" that ends on this coming Winter Solstice, December 21, 2012. The world does not end—Hooray! In fact, it goes on and on and on. William Saturno of Boston University, the archaeologist who manages the new discovery, published an article in the journal Science, and writes: "The Maya calendar is going to keep going and keep going for billions, trillions, octillions of years into the future, a huge number that we can't even wrap our heads around."

What Saturno found turned out to be a well-preserved mural that includes the oldest known Mayan calendar ever found. And just like the Maya Long Count calendar, which serves as the basis for the apocalypse myth, this calendar extends indefinitely into the future.

The Mayan calendar is 20 katun cycles containing 144,000 days, equal to 394.26 tropical years, and a whole cycle is 5,128 years. The current cycle we've been living in began on August 11 or 13, 3114 BC, and ends this year on December 21 or 23. The current 13th baktun will end, or be completed, on the Mayan date of 13.0.0.0.0 (which is equivalent to December 21, 2012 using the GMT correlation).

This new discovery provides us with clear evidence that the end of this 5,128 cycle marks the beginning of a new cycle! According to Mayan legend, the current world—the one in which we are all currently living—is an era of major change, the so-called Age of Movement.

Curiously, the newly discovered Mayan calendar in the chronicler's chamber has cycles of time recording 17 baktuns, rather than the standard 13.

The new finding shows that the calculations include a time span longer than 6,000 years that could extend well beyond 2012. Anthony Aveni of Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., an expert on Mayan astronomy asks, "Why would they go into those numbers if the world is going to come to an end this year? You could say a number that big at least suggests that time marches on."

Leaders among the Maya were keenly interested in astronomy and sought to coordinate sacred rituals with events in the heavens above. A chronicler of the heaven movements and time cycles would have been an honored member of the Maya court.

The wall in the chronicler's chamber was used in the same way a modern mathematician might use a whiteboard. The chronicler wrote his frequently consulted formulas on the wall of his chamber instead of having to look them up in a book. And— because these calendar details were inscribed on a wall—he preserved them better than any book would have. In fact, no books remain from the period when the chronicler wrote on his wall—researchers believe this wall dates to 800 AD.

In addition to the time data, there are pictures on the other walls in the chronicler's chamber, including an image of a king in a feather headdress, seated on a throne, with a white-garbed person peeking out from behind him (possibly a self-portrait of our chronicler). A painting of a scribe holding a stylus was on another wall.

According to the archaeologists, these paintings were the first Maya art to be found on the walls of a person's house.!

The chamber is a little larger than 6-feet square and is part of a larger complex in Mayan ruins of the rain forest at Xultun in northeastern Guatemala. Xultun is a large Early Classic Maya site. It is 24 miles northeast of the more famous Mayan site of Tikal. The site contains a pyramid that is 114 feet high, 2 ball courts, 24 stelae, and 5 reservoirs (aguadas).

Anthony Aveni said the astronomical data on the wall would allow a chronicler to predict the appearance of a full moon years in advance and could be used to advise the king on when to go to war or how good this year's crops would be. "What you have here is astronomy driven by religion," Aveni said.

On an adjacent wall are numbers indicating four time spans from roughly 935 to 6,700 years. It's not clear what they represent, but maybe the chronicler was doing calculations that combined observations from important astronomical events like the movements of Mars, Venus, and the moon, the researchers said. Why bother to do that? Aveni suggest that perhaps the chronicler and his colleagues were "geeks ... who just got carried away with doing these kinds of computations and calculations, and probably did them far beyond the needs of ordinary society."

Simon Martin, co-curator of an exhibit about the Mayan calendar at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is very excited by this find: "It's really a wonderful surprise. We've never really been able to identify a working space, or how they actually went about things." The new work gives insight into how the Maya worked on their calculations, he said, and the fact that the room had a stone roof rather than thatching supports previous indications that the chronicler enjoyed a high social standing.

An undergraduate student working with Saturno's team in 2010 first glimpsed the chronicler's chamber. After first dismissing the value of a little piece of paint on a stone wall spotted by his student, Saturno later went back to the spot and dug deeper, finding the amazing timekeeper's chamber. To Saturno's amazement, the wall writings were of immeasurable value to the growing knowledge of the Maya and their fascination with the stars, planets, and the passage of time.

John Carlson, director of the Center for Archaeoastronomy in College Park, Md., said, "It's a very important discovery. We're only getting a glimpse of the story" in the published paper. Complete details and photos of the discovery will be published in the June issue of National Geographic, which funded some of this research.

John Van Auken 2012-11John Van Auken, a director at the Association for Research and Enlightenment, is an acknowledged expert on the Cayce readings, the Bible, ancient prophecies, world religions, meditation, and ancient Egypt. It would be interesting if you could get a million people in one area to think one thought with discipline and take any and every measurement you can think of. Curious. Clearly there is a lot about the mind that we don't understand. I'm not willing to speculate much passed that tho. I'm down for experimentation tho.

While I mos def agree that Canadians are just as guilty in many ways, and I have ZERO national pride, but we are not the same. Not yet anyways. It's coming tho. We do not spend the kind of money you do on killing. Granted we're well on our way, but we are still WAY behing the US in that regard. Not that I'm excusing Canadian behaviour, just that it is different. For many years we were peacekeepers, not peacemakers. There is a MAJOR difference.

I'm so tired of watching unmanned drones kill children. I'm tired of seeing foriegn journalists rot in prisons at the request of the US gov. for telling the truth. It's sad and pathetic. You guys have strayed so far from what your forefathers intended it's sickening. They left Europe to escape what the US has become. Your democracy is weak. Money is taken more seriously than lives. And honestly, I hope that we get a change in our(Can) gov before we are too far gone.

That wasn't satire. They really did abduct and sodomize a German citizen then just let him go when they realized they ****ed up.

Of course you won't hear about it on many American cable news shows, but the European Court of Human Rights found the CIA guilty of this. Last Thursday I think. Hmm, wonder why that didn't make the rounds. Bought and paid for news is barely news. You ever wonder why you see all these BP commercials that aren't selling anything? Because they anticipate another **** up and want to have leverage when it comes time to talk about it. Oh we better not offend the people who pay for our salaries. It's just sad, man.

My point is, who the **** are WE to judge any other culture when we engage in mass murder, rape and torture, financial fraud and outright widespread political corruption? So we are nicer to our women than some cultures. So what. That doesn't excuse killing children with drones then reporting it was just a dog when it was clearly a child. It's sad. That Yemeni reporter is STILL in prison by Obamas request for reporting a missile attack on 22 children and 14 women and NO militants despite the fact that their ex pres wanted to give him a pardon and the people are still demanding it. But not ****ing off the US is more important than one man I guess. Wouldn't wanna harbour terrorists and lose some contracts and get slapped with sanctions. Please. Our culture is a sick culture. We aren't better. We are different, but we still rape murder and lie to cover our asses.

Don't take this personally. If these things disgust you too, do something about it. At least try. When is the last time you put any energy into positive social change? Honest question, I don't know you, but you seem like a nice guy. So what are you doing about anything? We are way passed petitions and parades. It seems like occupy is the only real force out there. The proof is in how they are treated by law enforcement. They are afraid, it shows! Like sure you have the right to protest. We set up a protesting staging area for you a mile offsite in a fenced area, by all means, exercise your rights. And the US sends boys and girls to die for this ****? Yall can call me as "unamerican" or "uncanadian" as you want. In fact, please do. I take that as a compliment. If speaking out about the wrong we do is a bad thing, then I don't want to be good.

ok, rant over. Back to the microcontrollers. I just finished my RF jammer. It has a radial range of 4 meters. It's so liberating to turn everyones phones off when you're surrounded by douchbags talking all loud and disputing a visa bill while in a restaurant. According to some contemporary interpretations of the ancient Mayan calendar, the world is supposed to end on Dec. 21, 2012. Here in the U.S., it’s still the 20th, but with time zones and all, big parts of humanity have already crossed into the potential last day. And, good news: they’re doing fine.

Here is New York Times reporter Edward Wong reporting from the scene:

Edward Wong @comradewong

It is almost 12:30 am on Dec. 21 in Beijing and we're all still alive.
20 Dec 12

New Zealand actually crossed into the day-of-days several hours ago; as of this writing, it’s 5:30 a.m. there on Dec. 21. A Forbes writer based in the Pacific island nation checked in an hour ago to report no natural disasters, alien invasions, or other signs of end-times.

Even if the world doesn’t end up exploding, today still has some darker meaning for China, and not just because some people seem to be taking the prediction surprisingly seriously. Wong also wrote on Twitter, “Many Chinese have been buying candles because of rumors of a 3-day power outage to start on Dec. 21.” Chinese authorities recently arrested 500 members of a doomsday cult that was noisily predicting Dec. 21 as the day. The New Yorker’s Evan Osnos writes that “China is more taken with doomsday talk than you might expect,” something the government takes very seriously. “China has a long history of religion-infused political rebellions,” he writes.

A new, award-winning book by historian Stephen Platt documents the Taiping Rebellion, a 19th-century religious insurrection that ended in tens of millions of deaths. Osnos writes, “But these days the Party is especially uncomfortable with obscure religious beliefs because, in the post-Socialist era, many in China have begun to hunt for something to believe.”

The government’s fear of religious groups, both extremist and non-extremist, still develops into action at times, some of it quite severe. The Post’s William Wan today reports on an astounding official campaign “quietly directing universities to root out foreigners suspected of plotting against the Communist Party by converting students to Christianity.” Here’s Wan:

The document suggests that despite small signs of religious tolerance in recent decades, China’s ruling officials retain strong suspicion of religion as a tool of the West and a threat to the party’s authoritarian rule. And with the country’s top leadership in transition and looking to consolidate power, Chinese religious leaders worry that the stance is unlikely to change in the near future.

As in the U.S., most people in China probably do not take the Mayan apocalypse prediction too seriously. Still, if the discussion in China around the Mayan calendar and its adherents seems a bit more fraught, now you’ll know why.

That means nothing until you leave and we can look back after a few years. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great women get to go to school and no doubt the Taliban sucks. But unless you invade Pakistan and pretty much every other country in the area, you rally aren't gonna have the lasting effect to justify the price tag.

As soon as you leave, these people are gonna have to keep fighting this war. I'm not so sure they are up to the task. Look at all the deserters. Look at all the defections. So basically you have trained one more force that can be used to teach a new generation how to hurt those they disagree with. This isn't a problem any American can solve. It will take time, blood, sweat and a ton of Afghan cajones. We'll see.

Just how many times do you have to arm and train a force juist to have it come back and bite you before you learn to stfu and stay out of other peoples biz, even when it is hard to watch. Imagine what could have been done socially with that money. You spent trillions on a bandaid and an attempt at manipulating public opinion. Time will tell, but I think I have a pretty good idea as to what will happen based on every other freakin example in the history of mankind. But no, of course, this time it's different.

On the plus side I've realized I can do what ever I want here. I found this run down anarchic city full of degenerates, theifs, murderers, harlots, and other various scum of society types. I've decided to become their king.

Lio nailed it for me, although there's a storm coming here and the weather is rather gloomy.

If the apocalypse happens before this fight takes place, it'll be the biggest let down for for this forum ever.

Oh, and we can't officially endorse any sort of challenge matches here, so take that outside to somewhere else on the internet.

Sadly, unlike other survivalist suppliers that I've been reading about on the web, we didn't have a run of sales on monk spades (http://www.martialartsmart.com/dvdk-yr001.html).

:(

Maybe next apocalypse.

That's cause they aren't fully automatic.

Spades involve, like, you know.... skill.

Who wants to get off their fat Walmart ass when they can just tool up and hunker down. You can even use one from an "extra-wide mobility scooter".

An entitlement cheque, a cheap bottle of mash, some KFC and an AR-15 w/ teflons!!! Anything less is just un-American!!!

That would make a great name for a rock band, yes?

I didn't make the Monk Spade thing up. It was Max Brooks. I'm just trying to capitalize on it. You know, when you sell something as obscure as Monk Spades, you do whatever you can to sling 'em.

Here's a reference from Zombie Wiki:

Monk's Spade (http://zombie.wikia.com/wiki/Monk%27s_Spade)

A Monk spade, also called a Shaolin spade, is a Chinese polearm consisting of a flat spade-like blade on one end and a crescent-shaped blade on the other. In old China, Buddhist monks used to carry around spades for two purposes: one was to bury any corpses they came across on their travels and give them Buddhist rites; the second was to fend off bandits if attacked. Eventually, they were stylized and given a crescent blade on the other end.

The weapon is most effective against the undead when used as a thrusting weapon (particularly to the face); it is slightly less effective as a slashing weapon, where attacks to the neck can sever the spinal column. Max Brooks controversially calls this the best hand-to-hand weapon in event of zombie outbreak.

Pros

Essentially a polearm; very effective for keeping zombies out of reach.
Has two blades on either end so you can use both of those in combat.

Cons

Bulky and sharp, so carrying it around will be hard.
Rare.
Weighted and used differently from many other melee weapons. Somewhat steep learning curve.

I got a bum deal, and the internet connection here is kind of slow...However I did meet this pretty cool guy....I mean once you get past the horrid smell of rotten flesh and ****, the walls and floors made of living perpetual bleeding people writhing in agony, the flowing streams of blood and puss, and the throne of skulls and bones he was sitting on when I first met him...but you know, once you get past all that superficial stuff, he's a pretty down to earth guy. He's been showing me the ropes and introducing me to all the must knows and so on. He's taking me under his wing, said he has been looking for a new protege for a while and I have potential. Wish me luck!

he had mistaken the dragon beak for the monkey beak. the technique was "yellow dragon splits cave". if he trained under a real sifu, he would have known the correct term.

That's what I thought. I mean, what's a "finish him" without yellow dragon techniques.... I mean, come on!!! Winning a fight means you get to take/mount your trophy....!!!

Another missed opportunity. And I thought missing out on monk spade (http://www.martialartsmart.com/dvdk-yr001.html) sales was bad.

I'm still waiting for this Nibiru or 10th planet fella to arrive. I look for it every time I pull out the ol maksutov-cassegrain but alas it's just not there. Maybe it's a dark star, those are fun to theorize about.

Syn7

Yeah I have heard like ten new theories since. Some people are just dumb. Like normally intelligent people being swayed by emotional retardation! Ok, some are just str8 retarded. But not all.

I feel the same way about natural design. It's bread from ignorance. We attribute weird theories to stuff we don't understand. It's cool when it's presented as just an idea. And I have no issue with personal beliefs. But there is no getting around it. It's a view based on a position of ignorance. Just like much of string theory, for example. But in this case it isn't spouted as fact and is not used to control others. That's why I love real science. It's all about ignorance. You live on the edge of ignorance and challenge everything. Where would we be if Newtonian mechanics were looked at as the end all of knowledge? We wouldn't be talking on the net, that's for sure. So to believe in one concrete spiritual philosophy automatically limits your spiritual growth to the limits built into the philosophy, and since you can't show it's true, you are willingly basking in ignorance. Some people say they know, but they don't. They just want it bad enough to fool themselves into believing they know. In science, personal experience is the lowest form of evidence. Whereas in much spirituality, it's the foundation. Scary.

While I agree it's natural to assign bull**** to what you don't know. We are at a point where we are able to use reason to deny ourselves our more unreasonable instincts. Instincts that help us to be sure, but not in this case.
