A 28-year-old man reported as being suicidal crawled out a bedroom window and ran into the woods armed with a martial arts-style spear Wednesday night once police arrived to try to help.

The incident occurred in the 1000 block of Brandy Lane in River Meadow mobile home park in Pere Marquette Township.

Michigan State Police, Hart Post, troopers and Ludington Police officers responded, establishing a perimeter to contain the man. Eventually he walked out of the woods and surrendered to troopers.

The man was transported to Memorial Medical Center to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. No criminal charges are being sought.

A man who kept “ninja gear” and alleged explosive devices in a residence in Holiday is now behind bars.

According to an arrest report from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Edward Day was looking through a dresser he shares with Chad Sutton, 39. He opened a drawer Sutton uses and saw several “ninja like” knives and ninja gear. He also saw what he thought were pipe bombs.

Day called deputies. They came and found four cylinders wrapped in black tape in the drawer. A green fuse stuck out of each cylinder. A deputy also found what looked like throwing knives, a holster and gloves with spikes embedded in the palms.

Day told deputies that he and Sutton had bought fireworks for New Year’s. He said Sutton “is obsessed with ninjas and has been collecting ninja gear for some time now.”

Day said Sutton “had to do something to prepare for the end of days and by collecting ninja gear and constructing bombs (Sutton) felt he would be able to protect the home. “

Sutton said he made two of the devices from M-80 fireworks and two from smoke poppers. A deputy asked if he intended to hurt anyone with the devices, and he said he did not. He said he wanted to make a better and louder explosive device.

He told deputies he made them for New Year’s. He was going to set them off, but he got to drunk and forgot about them.

Sutton, off 3300 Huntington Drive, Holiday, was arrested Monday and charged with possession of an explosive device. He remaned in the Land O' Lakes Jail Tuesday in lieu of $5,000 bail.

The jury deliberated just 30 minutes Wednesday before convicting a Honesdale man of striking another man in the head with a Japanese martial arts weapon in June.

James Mihalis, 54, was found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, the Wayne County district attorney's office said.

Mr. Mihalis was walking his dog on Dunn Road in Berlin Twp. on June 29, brandishing a sai - a heavy, metal three-pronged club - when he struck a vehicle driving by. When Jared Beattie exited the vehicle and confronted the man, Mr. Mihalis struck him on the side of the head with the weapon, sending him to the hospital for treatment, according to state police at Honesdale.

Judge Raymond L. Hamill revoked Mr. Mihalis's bail and he was taken to the Wayne County Correctional Facility until his April 18 sentencing, according to the release.

"This verdict sends a strong message that the citizens of Wayne County are not going to tolerate this kind of outrageous conduct," District Attorney Janine Edwards said in a news release.

Police say a Marshfield man broke into a blind man’s Tea Rock Gardens apartment around 8:45 p.m. Friday (Dec. 4), punched him and threatened to kill him with a “kung fu hook sword” – all over what appears to be a loan that had not been repaid.

This is a martial arts sword that has a hook at the end of it, and it apparently belonged to the blind victim; the attacker allegedly grabbed it off the apartment wall and threatened to cut the man’s head off with it.

Marshfield Police Lt. Paul Taber said another man in the apartment at the time – a friend of the victim’s, who’s in his 70s – was also assaulted. The victim said he tried to call 911, but the attacker grabbed the phone from him.

The attacker fled, but the blind man’s friend was able to identify him through a photo array as 56-year-old Keith Beaudoin of Marshfield.

Police arrested Beaudoin at his home later that night. He faces 10 charges, including assault and battery on a disabled person and on a person over 60, assault and battery to collect a loan, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (sword), and two counts of threatening to commit a crime (to wit: murder) and witness intimidation.

During Beaudoin’s arraignment Monday, prosecutors requested bail set at $50,000 cash; the judge set bail at $1,000 cash. Beaudoin is due back in court for a pre-trial conference on January 19.
