IDK. In Denmark fx it spread fairly rapidly because of all the fighting we did in the mid 80'. We were constantly sent out to fight or spar against other martial artist and mostly were the ones standing when the dust settled. That gave rise to a great many people switching from other martial arts. Much like you see with MMA today I think

Oh and having a well oiled marketing machine didnt hurt either.
Unfortunately it seems alot of the newer students prefer to stand on the shoulders of those going before them, instead of testing it out themselves :(
