In a statement that we are pretty sure is not an April Fool's joke in itself, state media has come out against the anti-China, anti-socialist tradition that is April Fool's Day.
On its official Weibo page, Xinhua, a state media agency never exactly known for its sense of humor, told its followers earlier today: "April Fool's Day is not in keeping with our national cultural tradition or socialist core values. Please do not believe, create or spread rumors."
Social media users couldn't help but laugh at the directive:
"This is the best April Fool's Day joke yet," one netizen wrote.
"In the West, it only happens one day a year; however, in certain Asian countries, it is every day, every year," another posted.
"The media is publishing false news to fool people every single day, what difference is one more?" another user commented.
"In China, every day is April Fool's Day," echoed another.
"I will watch CCTV news to celebrate April Fool's Day," another wrote in.
"I never knew Xinhua had a sense of humor," another netizen posted.
Within just a few hours, the original Xinhua Weibo post was filled with thousands of satirical comments from netizens, and Xinhua chose to close comments on the post.
With this statement, Xinhua appears to be taking the silly Western holiday very seriously. "Spreading rumors" is a favorite catch-all term used by the Chinese government to prosecute those on the Internet disseminating misinformation about things like the Tianjin blasts and avian flu. Back in 2013, new guidelines called for anyone who posts rumors that are reposted by over 500 people or seen more than 5,000 times to be subject to up to three years imprisonment; effectively ending the golden age of Weibo.
It seems that Chinese media is taking the hard-line, tired of falling for various April Fool's Day hoaxes. Most infamously, in 2012, People's Daily reported that Kim Jong-un had been named "Sexiest Man Alive," citing The Onion. The party mouthpiece ran a full 55-page photo spread showing off the Pyongyang-bred heartthrob's "devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm and his strong, sturdy frame," before realizing that they had been had.
In 2013, CCTV ran a report that Virgin was about to begin a glass-bottomed plane service, citing CEO Richard Branson's April 1st announcement. The program's producer later dodged calls from reporters, asking her to comment on the report.
That same year, the business daily 21st Century Herald was tricked into reporting that Paul Krugman had gone broke.
In another incident that only recently came back to light, former state media journalist Li Zhurun admitted that in 1981, he had read a report that cadets at West Point were being taught to "learn from Lei Feng," the mythical PLA soldier. He reported the story and it soon became big news in China. It wasn't until 1997 that Li learned the original story he had read had ran on April 1st.

Turn your skepticism radar up to full blast. It's April Fools' Day and companies ranging from Google to ThinkGeek are looking to bamboozle you with bizarre and just barely believable pranks.

We're prowling the internet for the funniest and weirdest jokes out there, whether it's a talking tulip or a koala with leopard spots.

Google Maps snake game

The Google Maps app turned into an old-school video game with the addition of a "Play Snake" feature. Tap on the snake icon, hit play and choose from a selection of destinations, including San Fracisco, Tokyo and Cairo. It puts you in control of a red double-decker bus, street car or other city-appropriate mode of transportation. You then have to snake around and pick up passengers. It's a fun bit of retro entertainment.

Google says the interactive joke will stay live for about a week, though you can head over to a special Google Maps Snake website to play after the app prank is over.

Google also released a video introducing Screen Cleaner in the Files app, a fake feature that is supposed to magically clean the outside of your phone from the inside.

Google Tulip
Google Netherlands offered up a very earnest video for Google Tulip, a new way to talk to the famous flower (and have it talk back). "Thanks to great advancements in artificial intelligence, Google Assistant on phones and Google Home is now able to understand tulips, allowing translation between Tulipish and dozens of human languages," Google says.

It turns out tulips aren't great conversationalists.


SodaStreamMe recruits an astronaut

Retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly teamed up with SodaStream to introduce SodaStreamMe, a burp-powered fizzy-drink maker. The ad plays on the difficulty astronauts have in space with ingesting carbon dioxide. There's a reason astronauts aren't chugging root beer in orbit.


ThinkGeek unveils oddball products
Geeky gear retailer ThinkGeek is infamous for its April Fools' fake products, some of which become real. For 2019, ThinkGeek went nuts with a lineup that includes a Banksy Toaster that burns the artist's prints onto bread, a Thor Mighty Mjolnir Mailbox, a Bean Bag onesie (yes, it's attached to your butt) and a Captain Marvel Universal Pager.

The Thor Mighty Mjolnir Mailbox is supposed to be "nearly indestructible."

HelloFresh's Unicorn Box
Meal delivery service HelloFresh encourages you to "eat like a mythical creature with a box full of farm-fresh rainbows, smiles and joy right at your doorstep." The company's glittery Unicorn Box meal kit sounds magically delicious. It's full of colorful frosting, gummy candies and, of course, rainbow sprinkles. Just don't ask if it's healthy.


T-Mobile Phone BoothE
T-Mobile's John Legere got April Fools' rolling early with the unveiling of the Phone BoothE on Friday. The pink booths are supposedly soundproof and meant to help mobile phone users have a private conversation on a busy urban street. Kind of like a modern Cone of Silence.

T-Mobile furthered the joke on April 1 by introducing the even-more-absurd Mobile EditionE (MEE), a portable version of the bigger booth.


Duolingo Push
Language-learning app Duolingo knows it's just too easy to dismiss its daily practice notifications, so for April Fools' Day, it's rolling out Push, a much pushier reminder system. Push involves a giant Duolingo owl mascot that follows you around and registers its encouragement or disappointment, depending on your preferences.


Contiki goes Dogtiki
A lot of April Fools' jokes focus on providing dog versions of services for humans. Travel-tour specialists Contiki unveiled a particularly nice take on this genre with Dogtiki, a coach tour vacation that's just for dogs.

"Now he can go on his own with dogs around his age, experience the world, get local sniffs, taste the food of different cultures and just come back with so many friends," says one enthusiastic dog owner. The best parts involve the tour guide trying to get the vacationing pups to interact with him.


Litter-Robot's The Cat Sheet
Automatic litter box maker Litter-Robot naturally turned to the feline side for its timely prank. The Cat Sheet is a high-tech sheet of paper that's designed to attract your cat to crawl onto it for a snooze. The fake advertisement is full of meaningless tech buzzwords and cute cats, a winning combination.


Shutterstock plans a physical library
Shutterstock is celebrating April 1 by stepping away from its digital heritage and promising to open a massive brick-and-mortar stock library full of physical images of tube socks and disgruntled ostriches. "Librarians will be replaced by first of-their-kind AI-powered robots, Cyanotypes, who will quickly search the extensive card catalog to help direct patrons to the image, video or music track of their choice," says Shutterstock.


Honda Pastport remembers the '90s
The Honda Pastport looks like a normal SUV on the outside, but the inside is another story. Honda's joke ad extols the virtues of the 1990s throwback interior, which includes a digital clock, cassette-to-CD converter, a pager holder and a dial-up modem in the glove box. It's all that and a bag of chips.


Lockheed Martin bottles space perfume
What does space smell like? Lockheed Martin bottles the odor of the cosmos for April Fools' Day and names it Vector. The company describes the smell as "featuring a deep metallic base" with a clean, sterile feel "balanced by a subtle yet seductive fiery undertone that burns off like vapor in the atmosphere." I sniffed a sample, and that's exactly what it smells like.

Lockheed Martin is actually offering up a limited run of Vector, which is designed to match a real astronaut's description of the smell of space.


Koalas with leopard spots
Tourism Australia offered up a compelling reason to book a trip to the land down under when it posted a photo of an adorable koala rocking some leopard spots. "We don't yet know why only certain joeys are blessed with such incredible fashion sense, but we're sure little April here is the envy of her friends," the tourism group wrote.

MANILA, Philippines — The local takoyaki store, which bore the brunt of online criticism for an April Fools’ challenge featuring a hefty cash prize, finally rewarded the victim who fell for the tattoo-on-forehead prank.

In a video posted on its Facebook page, Taragis showed that its owner Carl Quion personally met with Ramil Albano — the victim of its viral April Fools’ challenge — and provided him the promised P100,000 cash reward.

Quion then issued a public apology, emphasizing that the incident should serve as a lesson to exercise responsibility in posting on social media.

“Sa lahat ng nagkaroon ng negatibong pananaw sa naging April Fool’s post namin, humihingi ako ng tawad. At sana magsilbing aral ito sa ating lahat … na maging responsable tayo sa lahat ng inu-upload natin,” Quion said in the video.

(To all who had a negative reaction to our April Fool’s post, I apologize. And hopefully, this serves as a lesson for all of us… that we should be responsible for everything we upload.)

The incident stemmed from a viral challenge posted by Taragis for April Fools’, asking followers to tattoo its logo on their foreheads for a prize of P100,000.

In meeting with Quion, Albano explained that he was not able to see the disclaimer that the challenge was meant for April Fools.

Father’s love for his kid

He explained that he decided to take part in the challenge in order to provide for his son who is living with down syndrome.

“Para sa bunso kong anak, pang-tuition, at service noong anak kong bunso [na] may down syndrome,” said Albano.

(For my youngest child, for his tuition fees, and service for my youngest son who has down syndrome.)

Quion, for his part, offered Albano to have the tattoo removed by a certified dermatologist.

Prior to finally giving in to the challenge, Taragis in a now-deleted post reminded the public that the challenge was a mere prank, and that it should serve as a reminder “how important reading comprehension is.”

April Fools’ Day is a custom usually observed in Western countries on the first day of April. The day is usually celebrated by conducting practical jokes and hoaxes, with some businesses even taking part in the event.

The owner of a restaurant chain in the Philippines whose tattoo-for-cash April Fools’ Day prank went wrong has admitted the act was scripted and apologised over the stunt, saying he lied to make his business go viral.

Taragis Takoyaki’s boss Carlo Quion said Ramil Albano, who tattooed the brand’s logo on his forehead, had agreed to do so in advance and the plan was in the works since last year.

Albano got inked on March 28, a few days before Taragis posted a promo on Facebook offering to give 100,000 pesos (US$1,770) in cash to whoever would tattoo the store’s logo on their foreheads.

The poster’s fine print said it was an April Fools’ joke, but that apparently did not deter Albano from taking up the challenge.

Taragis and Quion later attracted criticism from social media users for lecturing Albano: “Let this serve as a reminder to us all how important reading comprehension is. It’s April Fools’ Day. Never trust anything or anyone. The same as any other day.”

To quell the anger over his antics, Quion met Albano with a cash-filled bag at his home in Caloocan, a city north of Manila.

The businessman offered to have Albano’s tattoo removed with laser surgery.

Strangers also started flooding the Facebook page of Albano with offers to send him gifts after he said he fell for the gimmick as he needed the money to provide for his youngest child, who has Down’s syndrome.

Quion said his company, which has more than 80 branches in the Philippines, badly needed publicity and “there was nothing more engaging than a brand logo inked on someone’s forehead”.

“Yes, I lied and I am sorry. We strung you along on a marketing stunt that involved a lot of emotions, discussions and acting,” he said on Facebook.

Filipinos poured scorn on Quion following his admission, accusing him of engaging in “inhumane and unethical” marketing tactics.

“A desperate strategy to gain social media attention but lost respect in the end. Poor people have no option like the rich people, they will always do everything to make ends meet like what Ramil did,” cryptocurrency entrepreneur Jem Francisco wrote on Facebook.

Some said Quion’s plan was a “scam” that could make people hesitate to donate for a good cause.

“Scammers/fraudsters will see this as an opportunity to run such a scheme. People might stop helping the ones in need thinking that it might be a similar trick,” said a user.

Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry also called out Quion’s stunt, saying it was considering suspending or revoking Taragis Takoyaki’s registration.

“You cannot use your official, legitimate name for an unlawful act or something that may destroy or harm others,” ABS-CBN quoted department assistant secretary Amanda Nograles as saying.
