I think it's important to periodically assess why we do martial arts and the value of a life long commitment to Kung Fu.

cool stuff :)
I know a karate dude that all he trains is freaky ****.
He'll do like 25 push-ups to warm up, but spend most of his time working on 1-finger pushups.
He'll work on doing one handed handstands, "flag poles", just cool stuff that he likes but that don't really have anything practical to them per say BUT he just loves doing them.
Great fun at parties, LOL !

Remember Jack Lalane swimming while towing 80 boats for his 80th birthday or some **** like that?

Crazy old ****s !

a lifelong commitment to any form of physical activity is a good idea and rewarding

All the practice I do is to help me have quality of life until I drop dead.
If you don't exercise, it's a pretty good bet that you will spend the last 10 years of your life suffering in some form of agony that could have been avoided if you had only spent the lousy bare minimum 90 minutes a week it takes to stay in shape.

I practice because I loathe a fat ass on myself more than on anyone else.
I practice because I don't want to live my last 10 in a hospital or a wheelchair.
I practice because it's the right thing to do for myself.

why?

What is it that by looking at a couple of photos of old men being physical makes you posit that?

just curious.

Ironically, Neil Young is basically fading away instead of burning out... What? No way! Shakey is still going strong. I saw him at Outside Lands just last summer. Neil & Crazy Horse threw down an oppressive set, befitting of the fog. It was brutally foggy in that coldest-winter-was-a-summer-in-sf way so Neil's set was just abusive. Neil knows how to play into distortion. After a climactic space jam of sonic depth charges, Neil went solo acoustic for Needle and the Damage Done, and I just marveled at his artistry. Fade away, my arse. Shakey can still rock the house (or the foggy SF field as the case may be).

Oh man, and from a fellow Canadian even.

Had a discussion with a Chen Taiji teacher yesterday. I asked him, "Which move will you use to kill?" We had a long interest discussion on that simple subject.

When you have reached to your old age, you want to develop some skill that you can kill with your bare hands "if you need to protect your family members". TCMA training is just as simple as that. Everything else are just distraction away from your normal training path. There is different between be able to knock a hole throught your opponent's head vs. be able to hold on a pole and perform human flag.

Nurse Scott: Time for your meds.

Tough Guy Rick: I've been waiting for you. I've been practicing.

Nurse Scott: That's nice, Mr. Matz. Time for your meds.

Tough Guy Rick: Don't mess with me. I can do thumb push ups!

Nurse Scott: I'm sure you can, Mr. Matz. Med time.

Tough Guy Rick: Don't even mess with me! I can balance on stacked benches!!

Nurse Scott: Mr. Matz, we can do this orally or rectally.

Tough Guy Rick: That's all I'm asking, sir.

A. This applies to both young and old

1 power practice (photo 1)

2 balance practice (photo 2)

are both important.

B. Due to gravity, we have to exercise all our life from young to old.

Gravity pull from mother earth does not diminish when you get old.

It takes the same effort to walk with our back straight for both young and old.

What can I say? I didn't say his music was lacking. But he certainly never burned out, is aging and plays music from 40 years ago and hasn't had much new in 20 years. Also, him and crazy horse only gig in the summers it seems. So, i don't know what the standard is for fading away, but that's pretty close.
