I tried searching but my search fu is weak today. I am pretty sure it's been discussed here before but I can't find it.

Anyway, I took out my broad sword last week for the first time in 5 or 6 months and noticed it is starting to get a couple of rust spots on the one side. What is the recommended method in removing this? Can I use steel wool and some oil? If so, what kind of oil should I use?

Products here are awesome for that purpose: http://www.flitz.com/

Specific to your need, this product: http://www.flitz.com/p-48-gunknife-care-kit.aspx

Also, steel wool can scratch the crap out of a blades finish.

If it is simply "regular metal/steel", CLR is good to remove rust then put a nice coating of oil on it.

If I know my broadswords...I am gonna say it is like a 440 with a brush finish or cold rolled with chrome plate.

Stainless cutlery grade steel is not all that common but it's out there.
Those would be the pricy blades that are made of that.

Stainless blades are great for display and demos but not for actual sword work.

True, it can be brittle.

having said that, no one really uses swords these days, but if they did, probably damascus steel or tool steel (T10) would be the best bet for something that you want to have functioning as a real sword.

I have no doubt, something made of these metals would cost...well, a lot of money.
Also depends on method of manufacture etc.

I think that a sword enthusiast MUST have at least ONE "real" sword.
I have a bunch of demo swords:
4 or 5 katanas.
Two from highlander, LOL
I have the sword from Heroes and the swords from Kill: Bill
I have two rapiers ( one has a very good blade on it)
3 long swords
etc, etc...
BUT I also have one forged Katana and one folded one.
CMA-wise I have two straight swords, one of them is the Adam Hsu straight sword.

Oh yeah?!, well I got a replica of the Blade sword from the movie Blade!! :p

True comment though. I have a Scottish basket sword real all day long. I have a claymore, also real as the stuff is slides through, a $1k Scottish deerhorn handled dirk that is practically a freaking sword (that's actually my nicest piece) plus like you, a crap load of other stuff, broadswords, katana, wakashizi, tanto, straight swords (jian), butterfly knifes (one fairly nice little set I got from MAM) and of course, the Kwan Do. Also from TigerClaw.

I have the Blade one too, my wife got it for me years ago, LOL !
The only swords I don't have is a scimitar/curved Persian/Arabian sword and a sabre-type one.
I stopped adding to my collection when our second child was born and I realized that with 3 girls in the house all my money was going to clothes and shoes !!

I'm finding it amazing that a person that has such a sword collection found a woman that was willing to mate with him!

At which Comicon or Ren Fair did you meet her?

I just spit on mine and run them across my face stubble. I'm so manly that that is all I need to do to keep the rust off my blades.

Actually, we meet when I was bouncing.
That said, we have gone to a few of those Fairs and I got lucky because she loves swords and I have gotten her a few of her own.
My girls love my collection too and have said they want their own when they get older.
Right now they want to learn archery though.

fine steel wool and Vaseline afterwards.

The rolled steel "Dragon forge" brand Dao will rust wherever you touch it, leaving rusty fingerprints if you don't care for it. Vaseline gets on you and reminds you not to touch the blade.

The Chromed ones are a lot better, but will still get some rust. Most will come off with cream polishes if you want to keep the blade "Jamison standard" me, never saw any damage from fine steel wool. Wouldn't do it everyday but, the chrome will eventually wear through if you use abrasives. A wipe down with oily rag after training is good too.

Sifu has a japanese military sword (short katana like sword) that's pretty interesting.

Wow, go away for a few days and come back to MightyB and Lucas reliving the good ole days.

Anyway, I've heard oil, no steel wool, some products, cLR. etc... Maybe i'll post a pic of the sword later tonight if I remember see what ya'll say. It's not like some fancy blade or anything like that, just a basic cheapy to be used to practise, but i'd still like to keep it clean.

I just use the same CLP that I use on my rifles. They even make a lighter spray-aerosol version. Spray a spot on one side and then the other and rub your cloth over it and the sword is clean and protected. If you need to store if for any amount of time don't completely wipe away the CLP with the cloth but leave a layer on there.
