View Full Version : Yoga is harder than Kung Fu

I've been taking Vinyasa yoga for a few months to rebuild the strength in my injured shoulder and opposite elbow. Holy sh1tballs. I sweat more in there than any martial arts class I've ever taken. I'm completely fatigued after a 1-hr class and sore for days after.

It ****es me off when 45 year old women can do crazy handstands and I can't yet. My shoulder is probably at about 65% and my elbow/forearm is about 85%, so I'm just now getting strong enough to support my weight and hold myself long enough to attempt a decent handstand pose.

On the plus side, I'm the only dude in the class. So all the hot spandex-clad MILFs bring me yogurt, drinks, etc to every class.

Anything that you are not used to will be harder than anything you are used to.
I've put marathon runners and triathletes puking with some bag routines I do.
Specificity rules.

I agree with sanjuro_ronin concerning specificity, I've been doing yoga since I was 12, and I have never thought of it as being difficult or challenging.

What? Yoga from a Korean woman? That's like learning kung fu from a white guy :p

I learned Kung fu from an Italian who learned from a Chinese guy in Seoul, Korea. It's a small world now, brudda.

Good yoga is at best difficult to do well.
I give it equal footing with difficulty.

But in practice...I think yoga is a great workout all on it's own.
You will sweat your arse off, even if it ain't hot yoga.

Injuries, basically. A pretty bad shoulder injury coupled with some tendonitis in my opposite arm that started after getting my elbow dislocated had severly limited my activity level. I was wrestling/sparring with one arm, literally, for about 3 months.

Took some time off, but that didn't work.

Had an MRI and went through 8 weeks of PT. That worked some, but I still had significant pain and the strength in both arms had atrophied quite a bit from non-use.

Lifting is boring as f@ck, so I figured Yoga would help me rebuild my strength and maybe even return most of my flexibility. I shopped around until I found a pretty serious school, or at least one that didn't look like a stretching class for fat moms. The first class kicked my ass so badly that I signed up immediately after. I already started to see gains pretty much into the 2nd week.

I've been going 2 to 3 times a week for 5 months, and 99% of the pain and stiffness is gone from both arms. My strength is slowly returning. I'm just now able to support myself in a few of the handstand postures.

And let me tell you, it's a lot of cardio work, too. Vinyasa is all about flowing, so you transition between postures a lot and change levels constantly.

It's almost the equivalent of doing burpess for an hour straight.

we do some yoga style conditioning in the xingyi class i go to, which has made me consider taking up a yoga class in general.

I had a kung fu student several years ago who had a stroke and was immobilized on one side.
After the crisis he began yoga lessons from an ex student of mine. He recovered the use of that side and was doing difficult yoga poses. The he he came to me for kung fu. Went on to do MMA. He is 50+ years old.
He boxed and taught bayonet fighting in the army when he was younger.

MasterKiller , that ' s because , Yoga was made for excercise to keep you in shape which is good for you , you learn to meditate so you can clear your mind and to obtain a better life .

Kung fu was made for self defense while you strengthen your mind and body through horse stance training , chi kung exercise , and you do whatever the sifu teaches you . The chi kung exercise can be considered as meditation too .

Alex Córdoba

The chi kung exercise can be considered as meditation too .

Not only 'can be considered' but it's what's meant to be. Chi Kung is nothing more than breath controlling which is the basic principle of meditation.

Thanks for sharing this story with us , I appreciate it , so people can recover from a stroke , when they do yoga and that former student of yours was 50 + old . How amazing . Stroke is no laughing matter depending on how damaged your body really is , but through rehabilitation and the doctor ' s care , people can recover , but it ' ll take time and patience .
