I just found this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0JerGLU6GA), look at the 2:57 mark.

It's a small world after all.

*I would've put this in the thread where we talked about the shin bite, but I couldn't find it through the search feature.

 You call that a shin bite? This is a shin bite (http://www.spiffykerms.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/lump-on-shin.jpg).

The video was real cool though, so I won't flame you :p

Flame Away - that's half the reason I come here!
:D

I only really felt insulted once here, and then I realized I was being stupid for taking the insult too personally and regret even feeling insulted in the first place.

great video, but why the "shock and awe"?

"shin bite" is fairly common tactic in CMA

I think it was before you came back from your voluntary ban, but there was a pretty heated discussion about whether or not it was a legit technique.

It was talking about this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCkAddvEl-4

1. You use shin bite when your opponent is in "side stance":

- The argument was if you use shin bite, your opponent can pull you back down.

- The counter argument was you only use shin bite on your opponent's leading leg when he has one leg forward and one leg backward. When he stands that way, his back arm won't be able to reach to your waist.

2. You use shin bite when your opponent is in "square stance":

- You opponent's arm can reach to your waist and drag you back down. This is why you may have to use "leg spring" to bounce one of your opponent's legs back. You then shin bite on his other "front" leg. Since your opponent will be in a bow-arrow stance, he can't pull you back down even his arm may have wrapped around your waist. Of course you can "crack" his waist wrapping arm to foce his body to move to your front. You can then take advantage on his weight shifting.

This is one way to develop your "shin_bite""

I caught a guy with sumi gaeshi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSXRb3Y4LdA) last night with your set up from that vid when he hipped out. Worked out pretty cool. But then again that's my bread-n-butter throw for everything.

hey it's not something I use or was trained in how to use and really was just looking at the leverage from John's video. I said his technique would work because it was theoretically sound, a lot of people said it wouldn't - so I said I'd try it. I feel it's theoretically sound, but I wouldn't be able to do it without being trained. It's a long video, but I think I say that in the end.

just pointing out it is the wrong set up, and with the wrong set up it is harder to understand, and many may think it doesn't work,,,,,

if I get a chance I will film something, busy week though

sometimes it's hard to express things without showing them.

I doubt I'd use it even if I knew the proper set up - old dog new tricks thing :)

This is one way to set up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B05NLVJwPSs

Of course you can set up from the head lock, over hook, under hook, or waist control positions. As long as you can "spring" one of your opponent's legs back to force him into a bow-arrow stance.

At one point I used an uchi mata feint to set it up similar to how you have in your vid, but that would be so Illegal to do that one might get a banned for life for even thinking too long about it. :)

May I ask why it's illegal to do so? It's perfect legal to do that in SC. My guy use that combo (leg lift, shin bite) in Sambo school and it was fine with them too.

The leg lift(uchi mata) is similiar to leg spring. You lift your opponent's leg up instead of to kick his leg back. Of course when you apply leg lift to lift one of your opponent's legs up, you can use "inner heel sweep" to sweep your opponet's other leg up. Since this may require great timing (you have to do it before your opponent lands his liifting leg back down), the shin bite doesn't have that tight timing issue.

I demonstrate it about the 4:20 to 4:30 mark in my vid, all that torque and weight would come down and to the side of my uki's knee - probably tear his ACL or worse whereas if I switched it to a common Judo combination and do what you call inner heel sweep (Kouchi in Judo) it'd be safer for my uki.

I see. It's the pressure applied to the knee joint that's illegal in Judo. Interest enough, both "shin bite" and "outer leg twist" are not shown in any SC books published in China. In the old time, when your opponent applies pressure on your "big" joint (such as ankle, knee, elbow, shoulder, ...), it's your responsibility to give up your own balance to protect your own safety. Of course the "small" joint such as finger joint was still illegal to attack even in the old time.

Sometimes I've seen where SC guys will wrap their opponent's legs defensively with their legs and in a lot of instances that would be illegal in Judo too.

This was my teacher's most famous move. The 1st time my teacher showed me this picture, he told me that most people would twist this picture 90 degree counter-clockwise. They may not know which leg is on the ground and which leg is up in the air.

Only Chinese can understand your reason.

In Taiwan, Those who train

- Judo are usually belong to "Taiwan independent" group.
- SC are usually belong to "Taiwan-China unification" group.

Oddly, all the Chinese I know who are from China don't really like the Japanese much.

When you give it a thought, it's not hard to understand why.

Just think of how Jews feel about Nazis and you get the gist of how the Chinese felt about Imperial japan.
