Real kungfu people can proudly wear their silk pajamas, wield their Chinese opera weapons, and perform taolu, knowing full well they don't practice something as silly and lowly as dance!

My training partner loves dancing. he does ballroom and all the rest with his wife regularly. It has improved a lot of his movement and why shouldn't it? It has rhythm, timing, stepping, grace...all the same prerequisites for any display of body awareness.

Greetings,

Boy how we forget. I commented on the abilities of the Nicolas Brothers years ago. They had a foundation that was great for kung fu training:

:) Bruce Lee took Wing Chun and mixed it with the Cha Cha to come up with Jun fanJKD. My own Kungfu contains no dance moves or dressing like women.

Fine line between a funkstylist and a mime sometimes, but I would put that one solidly in the latter bracket.

It's not a good idea to associate Kung Fu with dancing. When non-TCMA guys try to put down TCMA, it makes no sense for our TCMA lovers to put down TCMA ourselves.

It's not! Form is for teaching and learning only. It's not for training.

You don't practice tantui 20 times a day. You break it into combo drills. For example, The Tantui form #1 can be broken into 2 combo drills:

- jab, hook, back fist.
- groin kick, parry, face punch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0CrToy_O2Y

You can also train it as a 5 moves combo drills as groin kick, parry, jab, hook, back fist.

Now you have changed Tantui #1

from:

Jab, cross, back fist, groin kick, parry, face punch (this is for "teaching and learning"),

into:

Groin kick, parry, jab, hook, back fist (this is for your personal "training").

the official term for form in the Chinese military is "wu wu", war dance.

"all forms of song and dance as entertainment are to be banned, except fist poem and forms. award with silver those who create roads of dance from drills, and create songs about battle tactics."-general qijiguang

The crew is Morning Owl. They won BOTY Korea in 2012 and placed 3rd(I think) in the worlds. If you like that stuff, you should check out the winning battle where the Vagabonds took it. But ultimately it comes down to what appeals to you. Whether you want to see solid fundamentals, new ideas, high flyers, a healthy mix, it really depends on what you like. It's like saying "which song is better" when they are both really good for different reasons. Then it just comes down to personal appeal. For me, I liked Morning Owls clean uprock and solid fundamentals a lot more than I liked the party tricks. They didn't really bring anything new to the table, but they do what they do really well. They took almost every round in the whole battle.

While many of the skills are transferable and doing one can help the other, they have completely different intents, and that matters. You can approach isolated elements in a similar manner, but overall they have two completely different objectives and that will always play into methodology. You can apply this to any physical activity, really, but some activities have much more in common with MA's. Like tumbling, for example. Or like how football players can have a good base for MMA.

This is right on, and that's why it's so important to train martial arts with a combat mindset, otherwise it's just calisthenics. I actually think the contemporary wushu players and MA tricksters train better than the average hobby martial artists, at least they are clear on their objective and can tailor their methods accordingly.

forms ARE calisthetics.

its the masculinity, aggression, and spirit of brutality in the traditional dance that makes it different from modern wushu dance.

forms ARE calisthetics. the difference between traditional performance and modern wushu performance is masculinity and aggression.

Yeah, that's kind of why I was emphasizing a "combat mindset." If beautiful routines are the desired result (cont. wushu) then it's not necessary, but at least wushu players have a clear goal, most martial artists do not.

traditional forms are "beautiful" in their brutality, not acrobatic flair.

examples of how traditional forms are to be performed

northern kung fu is commonly cold subtle aggression

southern often hot obvious aggression

I think it's important to simulate the same ferocity and cold heart in training that you will need when you are fighting. its also important to build your heart when sparring by not being a poos.

you should always go to the attack against one. against multples, stand your ground against two, be allowed to move your foot (pivot) against three and retreat maneuver against four. this should be done from time to time with the intent to develop your 'balls' lol.

wombat combat test for warrior qi. you walk up to tightey whitey, look him in the eye, and tell him to bend over. if he do without hesitation, you have the tiger subdue dragon slaying spirit fetus.

You can't mimic the ferocity of combat in a form. Only when hurt, battered, and knowing that you must tear the life out of your enemy or else he will kill you, will you actually understand. Otherwise, you just are just playing a game, mocking something serious and sacred. You will never understand as long as you have that bell/whistle or that ref in the background, and you know that will save you.

Pretend to be a tiger. Yeah, have fun with that.
