Shaolin is a pretty broad term. Can you elaborate on the style of Shaolin you practice?

I practice Shaolin Ngor Chor Kun - Five Ancestors Fist.

Oh, and I am not in Illinois :)

Dang Abandit are you trying to bust my chops  My Sifu told me that he what he was taught was Shaolin. His teacher learned in a Buddhist temple in Taiwan(I don't know the name or exact location)Supposedly they practiced Shaolin arts there. My Sifu is from Brazil and outside of that group I haven't seen our style. It isn't like the Shaolin that is practiced in Songshan today. It more or less resembles somthing more like Choy Li fut. Royal Dragon trained with some students of John Tsai and he said the stuff we did looked really similar. John Tsai was a big Shaolin guy around the midwest awhile back. So to answer your question, I am not really sure the original name but I am always on the look out for people with the same style.

Why don't you give the guys at Iron Fist a call? What you do looks quite a bit like the Kung Fu they do, especially form # 9 from thier curriculem. The one you showed me is NOT # 9, but it has too many similaritys to not be related.

Those that are sucessful are also the biggest failures. the difference between them and the rest of the failures is this, they keep getting up over and over again, until they succeed. "The more they try, the more they fail, BUT, the more they try & fail, the more opertunity they have to succeed, and succeed they do!!"

Since you know those guys I was hoping someday we could go there together so you could introduce me. I am not really sure what to say in a phone conversation I would have to see what they do.

you said "His teacher learned in a Buddhist temple in Taiwan".

That's really interesting, I teach Northern Shaolin and my Shifu (originally from Shanxi) studied and taught in Taiwan (Taipei). Do you know the name of this "#9" that Royal Dragon refers to?

I wonder if the style you do has any relation to ours, although ours does not resemble Song Shan Shaolin or CLF.

I haven't ever even seen the #9 he is talking about. Saeksan you practice Bak Sil Lum right?
Hey RD do you have any video from the ironfist guys if so bring it down when you come and I'll take a look.

Water dragon- You said you practice Chi, what does that mean? Is that a system or do you just practice anything that includes work with the chi?

I do teach NSL, but it's not the exact same as the Hong Kong line (Wong Chia-man, Lam Kwong-wing, Chan Kwok-wai, atc...). "Bak Siu Lum" is Cantonese (although the hanzi is the same) and the "flavor" for the HK line is just a little different. So We refer to it as "Bei Shao Lin Chuan" since it's Mandarin (the official language for the R.O.C. Taiwan). Since culturally Hong Kong and Taiwan are quite different the style is also a bit different, so I like to make the distinction between the two lines (Bak Siu Lum Kune = Hong Kong and Guandong - Bei Shao Lin Chuan = R.O.C. Taiwan).

I have also noticed a difference in the flavors of HK, Taiwan and Mainland kungfu. I am going to sign up my school with the Koushu federation as soon as I can, any word on that rounament you were talking about?

Chris,
no I don't have any video of it, but maybe when i have time I could stop by and have Sifu Kathryn refesh me on it. I was trying to work it out here lastnight for you, but alas it is one that I never videoed or documented, so I'm confusing it with parts of other Iron Fist forms.

It'll cost you, but I might be able to set up some time with Sifu Kathryn one day, and we can all get together and work on stuff. I'll have to bring my camcorder, as #9 was one I always liked, but never did it enough to master.

It'll cost me? I don't want lessons, I just would like to see some of their stuff so I can compare it to my stuff.

When I have some time and a few extra bucks to toss one of thier Sifu's, I'll go in there and refresh myself on # 9 and then show you. I could always call and see if they would be willing to exchange skills or something.

I said it would probually cost you, I did'nt say how much, it might just be you showing your stuff to the Sifu.

By the way, I should be out there by 2:00 Sunday, so have your blank tapes ready!!!

What I mean is can't I just sit in on a class?

Royal Dragon

Oh, yeah, I'm sure you can do that. But if I have to drive into the city with you, I'm training and reviwing!!! You can sit there if you want. Besides, they have a GREAT conditioning system there, and I NEED to loose some weight since my health problems started last spring.

My doc. wieghed me in at 212.5 this morning. I'm best around 190-195. Last Fall (2000) I was an even 200 and still relatively strong. A little "Iron Fist Kung Fu" would be a good thing!!!

Great to hear that you are signing up! Did you receive my e-mail response? About the tournament, we're still on the drawing board, putting all of our ducks in a row.

I know that Maryland in a little ways away but our school goes every year and we work out deals with tickets and hotel stay. Maybe next year you could come along with us, lots of fun! :)

Hey that would be great! I heard there is a tournament in Chicago in April it is sanctioned by the USA wushu Kungfu federation. I will probally be there. I could probally get a good size place for a tournament for little or no $. Since I teach at the Kankakee park district I could pitch it to them as a promotional thing for Kungfu and we could get the building for free. We have a few good sized gyms and other buildings at our disposal. I am not sure if Kankakee is the best location for people but it is easy to get around and has good hotels. If there is anything I can do to help you with just let me know.

That could be a good option too. We we're thinking about Madison, most of my contacts are here and it's easier to coordinate things close to home, but I will definetely keep that in mind.

BTW, I'm sending you the USCKF info via regular mail.

Let's keep in touch and keep the ball rolling!

Do you have any info on the USAWKF Chicago event? I haven't heard or seen anything.

Shaolindynasty

I saw it on their web page under events and sent an email to the promoter. There are 2 dates on the site but one is wrong it is on April 27th. He is sending me some stuff in the mail. I am not sure what events will be there but I'll keep in touch. I under stand about trying to keep things close since that would be simplist but I have this urge to make kungfu popular in my area. What states are in your jurisdiction?

The states in my jurisdiction are:

Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana.

I know a few people in some of these states, hopefully it'll extend to all of them soon. It would be awesome to have a really strong CMA community in this region like you see in the East and West regions. That way we could support a strong and well organized CMA regional tournament.

"It would be awesome to have a really strong CMA community in this region like you see in the East and West regions."

It's about time I hear sombody besides me say this! Thats actually the reason I post on these boards. Hmmm maybe by the list of states Illinois is kinda a central place to hold the tournament. I agree that it would help if we knew each other though. I was playing with the idea of some kind of newsletter or magazine for the areas in your list, I just don't know much about getting it started. If you have any ideas maybe we could get somthing started!

We could use the newsletter to introduce the teachers to each other and talk about upcoming seminars, events and tournaments... it's great that we have the same passion here SD! Good synergy!

You still have my e-mail address right? We can see what the response on the board is and send info to those who are interested. Once we have a few people we can send an openning newsletter to those interested.
