Yes, these areas exist. No they are not magic.
Yes they are dangerous to train if not impossible to train with a partner.
Yes, teh key points are known by virtually all fighting "systems".
Some of the points such as a kidney punch or a back of the head punch are illegal in western boxing because what is known of striking those points.

The most important thing about dim mak is to demystify it and then to not teach it to the unscrupulous. Not that they can't find out, but why would you teach unscrupulous people such things anyway? :)
