Nice post. This is called "Kumite" in the Chinese language. Frank Dux was the only Westerner to win the "Kumite".

I really enjoyed watching The first clip, it was from one of the old 1980s Kuoshu Federation World Championships in Taiwan before the creation of sanda. ALL kung fu styles should be practiced with this intent again if we ever hope to compete with MMA, we need tornaments like this again instead of san shou.

Although the UFC fighters of today have evolved into more complete athletes, the fights are more predictible/boring since all the fighters more or less have the same skill set, I found it much more interesting during the early days where it was style vs style with limited rules. It would have been cool to see how some of these kung fu fighters would have done in the early bare knuckle UFC's under limited rules. and how these conditions would have influence how the UFC evolved today, I think it would have been better for the traditional martial arts development.

What's wrong with sanshou?

There is far more diversity in the UFC now than 10 years ago.

'Kumite' is Japanese for free-sparring, or literally, 'exchange of hands'.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to view the first vid on my ipad. When I lived in Taiwan, I was at the 1986 and 1992 world kuo shu championships. They were a lot of fun; very raw by today's standards, although by 1992, the fighting was more like current sanda than it was in '86.

Are you trying to detract from Frank Dux's long list of achievements? Are you saying the movie "Bloodsport" isn't TRUE???

Greetings, kung fu fighter.

Unfortunately, I do not. That's one of my regrets about my several years in Taiwan...I have very, very little video footage of anything. I just didn't consider it very much at the time.

I remember reading an article in Black Belt magazine about Dux years before Bloodsport came out, regarding the secret matches. The photos with the article were of fighters competing in regular Japanese karate tournaments, but with the eye area blacked out(!), as if to hide their identities. However, I believe I'd seen at least one of those photos previously in a completely different article. Now, that could have been purely the magazine's doing...IDK.

Frank Dux sued Van Damme in the late '90s for breaking a promise to him regarding profits and credit for writing another film, that ultimately was retitled The Quest.
