FightTraining.com has weekly techniques. This week two of the techniques are armbars. Paulo Guillobel(BJJ) show the armbar from mount and Erik Paulson(Submission wrestling/Shooto) shows a spinning armbar from side control.

Is that armbar from the scarf considered a high-percentage move? It looks a little iffy.

Nemo, that armbar from scarfhold is VERY common. It is done from many positions(knee on belly, side mount, scafhold, etc) and is one of the first moves I learned in BJJ.

Erik was actually do it a little slow and in pieces. At full speed it is all one move and your butt doesn't even hit the ground till the armbar is complete. It can be done straight from side mount, from a failed kimura, from knee on belly when your opponent tries to push your knee off him. There are many variations and entrances.

i say very common...you'll see it more in bjj because the gi adds friction, sweat lowers the percentage for all submissions.

"Whenever someone tries this I lift my arm and they fall on their head."

you my friend are ignorant. no ONE technique will always work but that one phrase shows how little you know.

The flying armbar is used OFTEN in mixed martial arts fighting and submission wrestling/brazilian jiu-jitsu. Comparing it to some application, apparently worthless in your eyes, is rediculous because it has been proven in combat. It has been proven effective in full contact fighting.

"flying armbar is a joke"

And you can see how well that joke works in the video.

ive seen that flying armbar in one of these ufcesque tourneys , and it amazes me how it actually works, if that technique was a kung fu technique that involved jumping up and grabbing someones arm ppl would be allover it saying bull**** bull****... :D

This is because THC is not an alkaloid. It does not contain a nitrogen atom, therefore it is a terpenophenolic compound

Hey Dan! Nice to see you here!.

Wong, a flying armbar is a "low percentage move," it doesn't mean that it sucks, it just means that it's not super easy to get on a wary opponent.

I think you would agree that most jumping kicks are similar? Dramatic, spectacular, and low percentage?

Nothing wrong with trying them though, and if you have the acrobatic skills, why not?

The GOOD thing about a flying armbar, is that if you have a good guard, a miss puts you in contact with your opponent, and they are in your guard... sweep city!

Oh, and stabbingash, why do you have to be such a jerk? For the record, I promise that if you just "jerk your arm up," and somebody has already gotten properly to your arm, like this little 130 lbs gymnast I know, then they will happily break your elbow.

Wonsifu, when you see someone drilling it over and over again and then see people winning with them in fights and submission based tournaments.....it works.

The problem some people have with KungFu is that they believe most KungFu practitioners don't try their techniques in live situation. We see so called "fighting" in movies though and we are told kungfu is awesome. I'm not saying this is what I believe. To tell you the truth I haven't seen much real kungfu, except maybe san shou but that is muay thai plus wrestling right? =)

There are plenty of jiu-jitsu guys who don't compete in tournaments but ALL jiu-jitsu pratitioners roll live in practice. Their body learns how to use and setup techniques in a full speed environment, against a resisting opponent who is trying to tap them out or better his/her position also.

Maybe you were just messing around with that comment =) sorry for the long rant. I agree that the kungfu fly armbar would never work =)

I must say though that I NEVER have used a flying armbar. I think I just have a fear of falling =) Everyone has their own preference. A guy that trains with Merryprankster and I grew up in gymnastics and he can do just about anything he wants. Flying armbar and cartwheel guard passes are effortless, with a little practice of course =)

tw,

Yup. He's so quick that when he goes for that, I just throw the armbar block, stack and try to pass :) There's no point in straightening up and moving backwards... I'll just tap.

Sorry to hear about training friend.

Are you near a metro?

truewrestler
11-20-2001, 04:36 PM
yeah, i'm near a metro(bus). I take the bus to work(Alex to McLean) and have thought of taking the bus to Lloyd's but all metro service stops in the Lloyd's area within a couple miles around 8:30...I wouldn't have any way to get home. Taking the bus to Lloyd's would take an hour and a half anyway and going to the metro and then going would be much more expensive.

I just need a moped!! I'll probably get my car back sometime in the next 6 months. My girlfriend drives it and is the only one insured so I don't have to pay. I don't drive it but once a month if I need it.

James, anything going on? Do you have any big tournaments coming up? Your competing in the one in Alexandria on Dec 3rd right?

I'll have to check and see about whether or not I am going to go to the Dec 3rd tourney. I have a very strange work schedule, and I need to decide if I am going to sacrifice sleep for the tournament :)

I see about the metro. I'm sorry bud.
