what is the upside down fist called?
[hand like an uppercut, but the punch comes straight out from the body, not curving upwards]

Sounds like you are describing the Water Fist, or maybe Earth Fist, especially if the fist is really rotated outwards. :D

Either Pi (splitting) or Zhuan (drilling)

It's definately not an upper cut though. Get that thought out of your head or you'll never understand the movement.

i didn't mean that i was throwing it like an uppercut, just that the hand position was similar - knuckles outwards from the body.
thats the only reason i compared it.

It's cool. It's my understanding that a lot of Hsing Yi beginners tend to equate drilling with an uppercut. It supposedly phucks up their game real good.

i doubt i could even be called a beginner haha
i've learned one hsing i form called hsing jin,
a form created by Ch'ang Tung Sheng.
from what i remember [i'm not sure if this is correct or not] it is a consolidation of the hsing i forms into a single form, based on his thoughts of applicability and practicality.
if someone can correct me on that, please do.
