Set during the late Ming Dynasty, the film tells the story of three close friends who serve as royal guards that are sent to hunt down a powerful eunuch, Wei Zhongxian, who is exiled from the capital.

But as they set on their task, the trio begin to see a conspiracy unfold.

The film stars mainland actress Cecilia Liu, actor Wang Qianyuan and Taiwan actor Chang Chen.
"Brotherhood" director Lu Yang says the film is not a traditional kung fu flick, as romance plays a heavy role in the story.

Lu previously won a Golden Rooster Award for Best Directorial Debut for his work on the 2010 film "The Spectacular Theatre".

He is considered part of a group of new-generation directors, which includes recent hit-makers Guo Jingming and Han Han. Kung Fu romances make good date nights. ;)

They're talking prequel and we don't even have a forum member review on this one yet? For shame... :o

Production News

Director LU Yang 路陽 and his producing partner ZHANG Ning 張寧 announced to local media last week that a prequel to Brotherhood of Blades 繡春刀 is in the works.

Made on the budget of RMB30 million (US$4.88 million), the wuxia film earned RMB93.4 million (US$15.2 million) during its theatrical run after opening with just RMB35.9 million (US$5.84 million).

Set in 17th century China, in the final years of the Ming dynasty, the first film follows three members of the secret imperial police whose loyalties are tested while on the pursuit of a powerful eunuch.

In an interview with local media, Lu said that he was encouraged to work on the prequel after the positive response the film received. The word-of-mouth success also convinced investors to increase the budget.

Lu did not reveal a plot or the cast yet, although it is expected to reunite the original's three male leads. He estimates that the prequel will earn RMB200 million (US$32.5 million) at the box office.

Obviously Brotherhood of Blades 2 (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?70222-Brotherhood-of-Blades-2) is the sequel to Brotherhood of Blades (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?67936-Brotherhood-of-Blades). Or maybe it's the prequel.

Anyone here seen the first film yet? It's been in my Netflix queue forever...:o

I don't know why this has sat unwatched in my Netflix queue for so long. It's got 'blades' in the title and y'all know how much I lulv swordfights. Got to be a winner, right? Well, it is.

Another modern wuxia - sumptuous sets, gorgeous costumes, panoramic cinematography, soap opera intrigue but instead of everyone sleeping around, everyone's got each other's blood on their hands. Just enough plot to build to a fine finale of sanguinosity. But let's cut to the chase. It's all about the blades. Sword fights a plenty. Decent ones too. Heavy on the digital blood and 1-shot/1-cut, but still very engaging. There's even a swept-hilt wielding sword hottie (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?41007-Sword-hotties&p=1302136#post1302136). Chop, slice and stab. My kinda flick.

I finally got around to this because of the just announced a prequel above.
