LA-headquartered China Lion Film Distribution has picked up Chinese titles Running Man and Somewhere Only We Know for release in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Both will go day-and-date with their Mainland debuts later this month and in mid-February, the latter taking advantage of the early Chinese New Year corridor. (See teasers below.)

Each of the films has a strong hook for Chinese, and Korean, audiences. Running Man mixes talent from both countries and is adapted from a popular reality TV series which itself was based on an original Korean format. Somewhere Only We Know taps the trend of romance and nostalgia, and stars Kris Wu, a former member of Korean/Chinese boy band EXO.

Running Man, which China Lion picked up from Wanda Media Group, is a feature spinoff of the popular reality TV show that revolves around celebrity teams who compete against one another for an ultimate prize. There is a precedent for a reality-to-big-screen transfers in China with last year’s Dad, Where Are We Going? having morphed into a feature that grossed more than $100M at the Middle Kingdom box office. Running Man’s cast includes stars of some of China’s biggest recent hits with Lost In Thailand’s Wang Baoqiang, Aftershock’s Li Chen, So Young’s Zheng Kai and Love On The Cloud’s Angelababy, joined by Korean singer and TV personality Kim Jong-kook and Chen He (Back In Time). The show was adapted by Zhejiang TV in China and is produced by Zhenjiang Blue Star Media, Huayi Bros and Wanda Media. Running Man opens on January 29 Down Under and on January 30 in North America and China.

Somewhere Only We Know, acquired from Distribution Workshop, will open February 12 in Australia and New Zealand, and on February 13 in the U.S. and Canada. Set to be China Lion’s biggest release ever, it’s directed and co-written by Xu Jinglei. The romantic drama, shot in English and Mandarin, takes place in Prague and stars Wu, along with TV actress Claudia Wang and Gordon Alexander, who has performed stunt work in The Dark Knight Rises, 300: Rise Of An Empire and the upcoming Everest. Xu also co-stars in the film which is her sixth as director. It centers on a love story set across time and is co-written by Wang Shuo, who penned Feng Xiaogang hits Personal Tailor and If You Are The One. Kaila Pictures produces.

Synopsis

Running Man is the feature film spin-off of the very popular reality television show originally based on a South Korean variety format. The film stars Wang Baoqiang (Lost in Thailand), Li Chen (Aftershock), Zheng Kai (So Young), Angelababy (Love on the Cloud) Korean singer and TV personality Kim Jong-Kook and Chen He (Back In Time), among others. The story revolves around Chinese celebrities divided into teams and competing against one and other for the ultimate annual prize. The film follows in the footsteps of the hit Chinese Mainland grossing reality TV feature spin-off Where Are We Going Dad?

Another popular television reality show has become a major hit at the China box office.

Accounting for approximately 36.1% of all screenings over the weekend, documentary/game show Running Man 奔跑吧!兄弟 – based on the hit South Korean reality show – earned RMB229 million (US$36.5 million) from approximately 7.14 million admissions. The ffilm features most of its television cast (except DENG Chao 鄧超) in addition to five guest stars that have previously appeared on the show.

In North America, the film gave distributor China Lion Film Distribution Inc its third best opening weekend ever, earning an estimated US$205,000 from 20 locations over three days.

Last February, the film version of Where Are We Going, Dad? 爸爸去哪兒, also adapted from a South Korean reality show, earned RMB252 million (US$40.3 million) over the first three days of the Lunar New Year holiday. Its sequel with the show's second season cast (without Francis NG 吳鎮宇 and his son) opens in cinemas on 19 Feb, the first day of the Lunar New Year.

Hunan Television documentary Sorry Baby 寶貝,對不起 earned RMB2.58 million (US$412,000) from approximately 86,000 admissions over two days. Similar to Where Are We Going, Dad, the documentary also follows several celebrities and their children on a retreat to learn about rural life.

Opening in third place, Boonie Bears: Mystical Winter 熊出沒之雪嶺熊風 had another huge opening, making RMB104 million (US$16.7 million) from approximately 2.97 million admissions over three days. The animated sequel accounted for approximately 18.5% of all screenings.

Last year, the Boonie Bears: To the Rescue 熊出沒之奪寶熊兵 made RMB101 million (US$16.1 million) over three days to earn a total of RMB247 million (US$39.5 million) during its theatrical run.

Amazing Pleasant Goat 喜羊羊與灰太狼之羊年喜羊羊, the latest film in the Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf franchise, opened on Saturday, earning RMB25.9 million (US$4.13 million) from approximately 834,000 admissions over two days.

Last year, Meet the Pegasus 喜羊羊與灰太狼之飛馬奇遇記 earned RMB46.1 million (US$7.36 million) on its first four days. It made a total of RMB86.03 million (US$13.7 million) during its theatrical run.

With only approximately 6.85% of all screenings over the weekend, Angelina JOLIE's Unbroken opened in fifth place, making only RMB14.8 million (US$2.37 million) from approximately 459,000 admissions.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies dropped to second place, making RMB127 million (US$20.2 million) from approximately 3.07 million admissions. After 10 days, the fantasy epic has earned RMB577 million (US$92.1 million), making it the highest grossing film of the trilogy.

After four weekends, Leste CHEN 陳正道's 20, Once Again! 重返20歲 has earned RMB356 million (US$56.9 million) as of Sunday. On Monday, it official surpasses the ₩62.7 billion (US$57 million) gross of South Korean version Miss Granny 수상한 그녀. The former attracted approximately 10.7 million admissions in China, and the latter attracted 8.66 million admissions in South Korea. Both versions of the film are produced by CJ Entertainment Inc CJ엔터테인먼트.

Still in cinemas on an extended theatrical run, TSUI Hark 徐克's The Taking of Tiger Mountain 3D 智取威虎山 has made RMB875 million (US$140 million) after 41 days in cinemas.

This weekend, Eva JIN 金依萌's Crazy New Year's Eve 一路驚喜, Herman YAU 邱禮濤's An Inspector Calls 神探駕到 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 open in China cinemas.


In Taiwan, American Sniper topped the box office for the third consecutive weekend, earning NT$6.14 million (US$194,000) in Taipei between Friday and Sunday. The Clint EASTWOOD war film has made NT$43.3 million (US$1.37 million) in the capital.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water opened in second place, earning NT$4.45 million (US$141,000) from 18 locations in Taipei over three days.

From seven Taipei locations, Whiplash made NT$1.48 million (US$46,700) over three days to open in ninth place.

In eleventh place, Wild earned NT$1.21 million (US$38,400) from 13 Taipei locations over three days.

From just four locations in Taipei, YU Ha 유하 | 庾河's Gangnam Blues 강남 1970 earned NT$778,000 (US$24,600). Including early previews, the gangster drama has earned NT$1.13 million (US$35,700).

Distributed locally by Hualien International Film Co Ltd 華聯國際商務股份有限公司, PANG Ho-cheung 彭浩翔's Women Who Flirt 撒嬌女人最好命 made NT$374,000 (US$11,800) from six Taipei locations over three days. It has already surpassed the Taipei gross of the director's Aberdeen 香港仔.

From six Taipei locations, KITAMURA Ryuhei 北村龍平's Lupin the Third ルパン三世 earned NT$294,000 (US$9,320) over three days.

Japanese erotic drama A Courtesan with Flowered Skin 花宵道中 made NT$187,000 (US$5,910) from four Taipei locations over three days.
On just two screens, Black Coal, Thin Ice 白日焰火 made NT$50,800 (US$1,610) over three days.

Jupiter Ascending, Paddington, The Last Five Years and Still Alice open in Taiwan cinemas this weekend.


American Sniper remained the top film in Hong Kong for the second weekend. From 39 locations, the war film earned HK$2.84 million (US$367,000) between Thursday and Sunday. It has made HK$9.38 million (US$1.21 million) after two weekends.

Mortdecai was the top new film, making HK$2.55 million (US$329,081) from 37 locations on its first four days. Last year, Transcendence earned HK$2.89 million (US$373,000) from 34 locations on its first four days on release. It earned HK$6.31 million (US$813,000) during its theatrical run.

Local erotic drama The Gigolo 鴨王 was a surprise hit, earning HK$2.33 million (US$300,620) from 32 locations over four days. The Panasia Films Ltd 泛亞影業有限公司 release — about a young man who uses his natural physical talent to become the most popular male prostitute in town — was in the local tabloids last week when clips of nude scenes from the film were leaked on the internet.

Opening in 21 locations, Nightcrawler made HK$838,000 (US$108,000) over its first four days. Submarine thriller Black Sea made HK$715,000 (US$92,200) from 25 locations over the same period.

South Korean heist film The Con Artists 기술자들 opened in 14 locations and earned HK$394,000 (US$50,900) over four days. The KIM Hong-sun 김홍선 | 金泓善 film was released locally by Deltamac.

JIANG Wen 姜文's Gone with the Bullets 一步之遙 — released only in 2-D in Hong Kong — earned HK$369,000 (US$47,600) from 15 locations on its first four days.

American comedy St. Vincent opened with HK$302,000 (US$39,003) from nine locations. Mainland China spy film Who Is Undercover 王牌 earned only HK$39,400 (US$5,085) from one cinema.

After two weekends, Parasyte: Part 1 寄生獣 PART1, Birdman and 20, Once Again! have made HK$5.05 million (US$651,000), HK$4.29 million (US$553,000) and HK$830,000 (US$107,000) respectively. Sundream Motion Pictures Ltd 驕陽電影有限公司's has earned HK$4.10 million (US$528,000) after three weekends. Boyhood has made HK$1.91 million (US$246,000) after four weekends.

Jupiter Ascending, Gangnam Blues, Meet Miss Anxiety 我的早更女友, Wild, Still Alice and Partners in Crime 共犯 open in Hong Kong cinemas this weekend.
