here's the very late translation from my friend on that norwegian shovel incident, which is probably utterly useless now:
this is the translation of the text under the pictures:
1) THE QUARRAL. Two men were quarraling for 30 min before the punshing
started. The victim in the white shirt wanted an apalogie from the
defendant because he had hit him in the back of his head with a spade.
2)KNOCKED DOWN. Two friends of the defendant came, and the defendant came
up with a hard and surprising stroke against the victim.
3) FELL TO THE GROUND. The victim fell to the ground, but got up again.
4)KARATE KICK: The defendant tried to hit one of the friends of the victim,
before he once again attacked the victim. This time with a karate kick
towards the face.
5)LIFELESS. Both the kicks and hits (i mean with the hands) were obvious
ment to hit the victims head, and all of them were hard.(the last sentence
is from the court) :p

Anything used to fight is serious business. Knives just make it easier to make serious damage. I remember a student who just learned a few moves in Arnis de Mano with sticks and tried the same moves with swords. It was no surprise after a few moves he cut his leg open, dropped to the floor bleeding. Luckily he didn't hit an artery. Its the old "kid burning his hand on the radiator" scenario. Its hard to imagine the danger of weapons until its happened to you or someone you know. TV and movies seem to make it cartoonish.

This is why I always cringe when I see TKD types caring knives thinking they know how to use them.

True - even an amateur is VERY dangerous, but a fool is often parted with his weapon and finds it used against him - even by a bruiser who doesn't know knife fighting.

Scary, scary stuff - and all the more reason to train to deal with it.

In the Kali club I was in, I was on top for empty handed in class sparring, but with the knife I was in the top five. Often number two. Who was the undisputed number one? A young girl who was just so darn quick, you were down before you knew it.

Kinda humbling ain't it?
