Hi boxerbilly,

You have healthy, diverse, tastes.

A piece of trivia for you: Cheryl Lynn first premiered that piece as a contestant on The Gong Show. She won with it.

I discovered this track last year:

Anything is possible these days. I enjoyed the strawberry trick.

Come to think of it, Cheryl Lynn won twice. She won the show that had past winners competing.

greetings,

boxerbilly, you seem to have a thing for women who compete on TV. In younger days, Olivia Newton John competed in Australia and won.

The following is a small intro to Rebecca Ferguson, the runner up in the UK version of X Factor a few years ago. She is painfully shy but absolutely amazing. I am ga-ga over this chic:

Cool stuff, guys!

Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (by Spirit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPzvHV1yTbk&sns=em

This album has long been one of my favorites. My earliest tastes in rock music were heavily influenced by my older bro and sis. My bro's been a musician since the late 1960s (guitar). Later, by around age 9, I got my own radio and started buying my own albums, and developed my own eclectic tastes. Back then, radio stations that played popular music played a combination of genres that you'd never see played on the same station nowadays.

Some Commentary,

"Gael" makes me want to bite a chunk off a bullet while it is in motion.

Spirit really tried to expand the boundaries of what was accepted as Rock and Roll and I respect them for that. "Why Can't I Be Free" sounds like the inspiration to "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Big Band sound is wonderful. I enjoy the musical mischief. The Glenn Miller piece immediately took me to the Series "Crime Story".

"Tighter, Tighter" is still Hex Rated, much like "Afternoon Delight". :D

Beach Baby (by First Class)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpsmHfDqsl8&sns=em

First Class was a short-lived British studio group that was brought together for this song. Beach Baby came out in 1974, and was a retro-style song inspired by the Beach Boys 1960s-era hits. In reality, the First Class members couldn't have been further from the California beach life. But ironically, I always liked this song more than any of the actual Beach Boys songs that inspired it.

Jimbo, all 4 are great songs.

Mickey, Im listening to that one at present. I like jazz. I used to play the clarinet.I was not very good. I hated it. I wanted to play the guitar so mom said this first. Well I got my guitar eventually. Nice knock off Les Paul. I wanted the SG. It was 600 bucks when that was kind of a lot. She said no SG. In the end I was better at the clarinet but still not very good. My brother was great with it. My other brother excelled with drums. I could not play those well either.

Hey Jimbo, were you a surfer? I used to body board. I knew Tom Morey. I've been in his house and held his very first board. I was his sons boss for short time. Moon Morey. My boss did not care for him and I could not save his neck. I used to live across the street from Corky Carroll, I never spoke to him but I watched him throw away all his trophies one day. I was tempted to take them but then I decided if he wants them gone I have no right to take them. I used to bodyboard. My brother won a couple of Long Board Comps. Neither of us surf anymore. I only body surfed. My brother surfed for a while when I was little and he got hurt one day. Then he stopped surfing. For whatever reason, that put me off board surfing. Silly, because later I got into MA. I've had injuries from MA training that were worse than my brother's surfing accident. Also a near-horrible accident while body surfing. But I still had great times at the beach.

Cool story, Billy.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Was in the Segar Line up. Such a sad song. Bit I could never turn the channel. My grandmother lost here brother on the "Nasty Asty". It is not related to this song but it fit for me from the stories I was told.

I have a question. All answers will be different. And perhaps correct from your perspective. But can anyone , from their perspective of course, I love to learn, tell whom are the most brilliant people to live and if so why and are you really sure? Often we credit the genius with the product.

Greetings,

From Quincy Jones' "Back on The Block": Jazz Corner of The World/Birdland

Featuring rappers and a rare assemblage of Jazz legends, Quincy Jones "successfully" established the link with Jazz/Bee Bop and Rap. I say "successfully" because the link between the two is it's people, the ones who created it. Quite a few Jazz legends who appeared on this track/album passed away within a few years of this recording. This track received very little radio time on the black urban radio stations in NYC. It s absolutely epic:

Straight To Hell

"clear as winter ice/ this is your paradise/ there ain't no need for ya/.....wanna join in a chorus, of the Amer-Asian blues/ When its christmas out in Ho Chi Minh City/ Kiddie say papa-papa-papa san take me home/ see me got photo photo photograph/ of you & mama mama mama san.../ "let me tell you bout your blood, bamboo- kid/ it ain't coca cola, it's rice".... straight to hell"

https://youtu.be/bkyCrx4DyMk

strong instrumental & strong lyrics. my father, my uncle, my dad's cousin and many american men in his generation were vietnam war veterans. i was always fascinated with stories about the vietnam war as well as social impacts of it, etc. my dad's good friend from the war, a navy seal, wrote a best selling book - "Navy Seals in Action" (if thats not the actual title it's close). Anyway- a good song by a good band.

That is a great song TMatt. The Clash was the first band I would call my band. But then I found The Who. It was also the first band I owned all the I want to say albums but really cassette tapes too. The ones available in the US anyway. There may have been others?

One of my favorite songs. Thanks Jimbo.

Ringo Starr was such a great drummer but he got over shadowed by his 2 band mates and further kicked off the podium by Keith Moon and John Bonham.

Hi, Billy.

Regardless of who was the best drummer, Ringo will always remain my favorite. Every one of The Beatles were/are great individual musicians, but IMO, The Beatles was greater than the sum of its parts. Together they were the ultimate creative force, IMO.

I also love Helter Skelter a lot. In fact, The Beatles White Album is probably my all-time favorite album.

There is talk they are going to make another one. Lambert said he is out. At best a very brief cameo. If so, he will not be Connor. Now they can do way better special effects today. But will the movie be as good? There is a possibility they create another Highlander, Like they did with Duncan.

Yes , she is great. She lived someplace up in the hills in San Clemente. Her back yard was Camp Pendleton , so south end of town. I never saw her in town. It is incorporated as a city, it is a **** town! Nice one at that. Great song. Thanks.

So far so good. Seems much better today. His gait is almost normal. He always suffered from gran mal seizures. But not like this. Usually 1 or 2 every few months in his life. Yesterday. Probably 15 total. Long and violent. He had 2 after 7 pm last night. A bad one at 12:30 AM and another small one at 4:30 am. Watch him over the next couple of days and hope he returns to normal. Which again, he seems pretty much this morning. He is a Shiba Inu-Running Fox breed.

*From the album Myths and Legends of King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table.

When I was in 6th grade, I remember catching this song on the radio once, towards the end of it. I only remembered the DJ saying "...from King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table". I only heard it the one time, but I particularly remembered the part that begins at 8:11. It was 36 years later (in 2011) that I looked online for King Arthur music from 1975 (the year I heard it) and purchased the CD. That ending flourish of the song (which also occurs in the middle as well) was exactly as I had remembered it. I like the entire album, but IMO, this is the best song of the lot.

Adrian Younge "Something About April". Adrian Younge scored Black Dynamite and is a real talent. Though I think he needs to diversify his timbre, this piece brings back to mind that incredible horror queen, Barbara Steel.

Some make reference to Ennio Morricone in the comments, I do not know if this is a cover.

With most Beatles, it's like you've heard it so many times you can't hear it anymore. Strawberry fields forever minus most of the swishy psychedelic effects, and distinct and crisp profiling of what's left. What a song

I'm pretty sure this song predates 1985; I heard it years before that.

None less than Chrissie Hynde & Johnny Marr covering Dione Warwick in haunting Bacharach/David Vietnam war protest song.

Perhaps my favorite song from them.

Thank you.

It's kinda cool when someone famous lives nearby, even if you never see them. I think it was back in the '90s when Barry White lived for a while in a house in the same area where I live, though I never knew where. I'm assuming on the more upscale side.:) I would never have tried to find out where, anyway.

The following song is from 1985, and was Taiwan's answer to We Are The World. It was my first full year living in Taiwan, and you could hear this song playing everywhere. Although I was never really a fan of Taiwan pop music, for some reason I liked this one. Even when I was speaking Mandarin at my best, the most I could ever understand in this song were bits and pieces, a line here and there. But the feelings conveyed are universal, and I liked it better than We Are The World. A version sung by a children's choir is in the 1986 John Woo movie A Better Tomorrow.

A bit of Kung Fu movie trivia: Singer Jenny Tseng, the widow of the late, great Shaw Brothers Kung Fu film star Alexander Fu Sheng, appears at 0:53.
