First I wish to thank Gene Ching Sifu for the book SHANG YUN-XIANG STYLE XINGYIQUAN by Li Wen-Bin. I can't remember last time I won something, so it was a big surprise to win. I've had some time to read the book and was impressed with the author's interpretations and edification's of his teacher Shang Yun Xiang. Master Shang studied from Li Cun Yi and from Guo Yun Shen, who were famous for their Peng Chuan, so it's not surprising that Master Shang was also famous for his "Crushing Fist."

I know that when he first went to Li Cun Yi, he was refused instruction because Master Li thought his physic wasn't suited for Hsing I. If not from the incouragement of Zhou Ming Tai, student of Liu Qi Lan, Li Cun Yi would not have taken him as a student. Master Shang became famous for his prowess as a fighter and reflected his teachers Li and Kuo. Shang also studied Bagua from Li Cun Yi and Cheng Ting Hua. Shang had nicknames such as "Iron Arms," and "Iron Feet Buddha." It was said that he often practiced barefoot because his Half-step footwork propelled him so quickly forward, that as he trained he would break out of his shoes. Eventually, he decited to practice barefoot and thus saved money on buying shoes frequently.

What I like about this book is the detail of practices of the Hsing I art. It separates the differences between using movements for Chi Gung and Chuan, where many teachers have the same movements for the two different aspects. He emphasizes the different order of the Five Fists (Wu Hsing), so that the main emphasis is the creative cycle and not the controlling or resisting cycles. Li Wen Bin gives better explanations by rewriting many of the songs and poems that have been published and republished; and explains in detail why they need to be rewritten.

The book covers many of the basics of Hsing I, but with a lot of details that appear to be in depth explanations not normally found in books. I found this very refreshing. The Five Element Fist sequence, the Forward and Backward Linking Fist sequence are covered in the book as well as many Hsing I weapon sets such as: Linking Broadsword, Linking Sword (Jian), Linking Staff and Linking Spear.

This is a book I plan on reading many times and hope to assimilate many of the concepts I have been impressed with. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to extend their knowledge of Hsing I. I hope the authors will write more publications in the future.

Lastly, I wish to thank KungFuMagazine.com and Gene Ching sifu for giving me this book in their contest.
Respectfully, Patrick B.
