TW, you truly are the NHB multimedia guru. :) That was a cool fight, but I was expecting a much better opponent for Inoue. It was obvious that the guy was trying to use his mediocre striking skills to compensate for Inoue's superior ground skills. I know Inoue isn't the best striker in the sport today, but his opponent obviously had weaker standing and ground skills.

I never thought I would see that submission used without more control over the oppoenent's movement. He was just flailing his punches totally ignoring the fact that Inoue was obviously attempting a leg submission.

I think he's as nervous as I would have been. I mean c'mon, those knees from the clinch looked like he was skipping along like a elementary school student.

*Note* The Jaguar wouldn't have fared much better, but the striking portion would have looked nicer :p

yeah, that was a good fight. Inoue's opponent is good standing and on the ground...just not as good as Inoue...but did you see those knees he connected with before falling backwards? Doerkson is trying a heelhook from the bottom(heelhook pictured below) when Inoue submits him. Doerkson ended up with his foot on the outside of Inoue's thigh which left it exposed.

During this heelhook(opponent is standing) and most in general you usually want to either:

1)keep your knee between your opponents legs and squeeze your knees together while applying the lock

----or----

2)using your right foot,(as in the fight, opposite of picture) push on the inside of your opponents left knee. This lessens his base and can make him turn away from you, sometimes loosing his balance, allowing you to complete the lock.

Cooper's ground and pound style is something I've been trying to emulate over the years.
I really liked his power and fury on the ground.
His control was good too. :)

I dunno, I didn't see the heel hook attempt. I'm no expert, though so I wouldn't notice any small body movement details to set up the heel hook, but I didn't even see a grab for it. It looked like he was keeping his eyes on Inoue defending against any possible strikes (which Inoue was throwing out to keep the guy busy).

I'll admit it's hard to judge his stand up skills with such a short stint on his feet, and I didn't really see the first knee (it sounded like a solid hit), but the other two before he fell didn't really land. I've been hit by knees like that while some of our Chi Sau drills got out of hand :)

I'm sure Doerkson could easily get the heel hook he was looking for against me :), but I guess he was just outclassed in this fight, so it's difficult to tell how good his skills are.

The heelhook...

Inoue gets mount but Doerkson defends by getting his knees up between him and Inoue. Inoue stands up and tries to punch. Doerkson's legs/knees are still between Inoue's. He gets perpendicular to Inoue by spinning his body to his left and at the same time wraps his left leg behind and in front of Inoue's right leg.

The positioning of Doerkson's left leg is similar to the rightleg of the guy in white in the picture above, except Doerkson's left foot was all the way across Inoue's body and not pushing on the body like the right foot in the picture.

As long as Inoue is standing with his weight on the heel of his right foot(or at the least not leaving space between the heel and the floor), Doerkson can't get the heel in the crook of his left elbow(as seen with the crook of right elbow in picture) to enact the heelhook. The left leg that he wraps around Inoue's leg is to add pressure to Inoue's knee to get him to turn away As I mentionned in my first post, at this point he could have pushed on the inside of Inoue's left knee with his right foot but of course that is just one of many options.

Why get him to turn away? If Inoue turns away he is pivoting on the ball of his right foot and his heel would leave the ground, exposing it to a heelhook. Getting(tripping) Inoue to the ground would also allow the application of the heelhook.

As Inoue goes for the foot lock, he turns away. Doerkson tries to sneak the crook of his left elbow under Inoue's heel but Inoue keeps a wide base and his heel barely, if at all, leaves the ground.

Inoue is just strong!! and wasn't about to be turned away. Its hard to see but even when he turns away to get the foot look he tries to keep his foot pointing towards Doerkson's head and his heel on the ground. His legs are strong and he was able to resist the pressure from Doerkson's left leg, even when Doerkson was perpendicular which adds much more pressure.

Doerkson would have caught me and the majority of fighters out there with that no doubt =) Knowledge isn't everything!

Ryu,

I just watched <a href="http://www.superbrawl.tv/sb-13cooperbennett.htm" target="_blank">SuperBrawl XIII - Ray Cooper vs Danny Bennett</a>. Cooper is awesome!

LOL, see like I said, I can't recognize the body movement details of the heel hook. I was looking for his arm trying to scoop the heel into the crook of his elbow. :) I know what you're talking about when you mention keeping your heel on the ground, but I was taught the heel hook by a larger gentleman (6' 235-240lbs -- or 106-109kg for you "blokes" :p), so when he would go for it, he could basically off balance me easily from open guard to take the heel. That's what I was looking for.

Thanks for pointing it out to me.

oh my god....watch this video...nasty heelhook...and I'm not just refering to Shamrock's technique ;)
<a href="http://sherdog.com/cgi-bin/ufcmatches.pl?ufc1/ufc1_shamrock_vs_smith.zip" target="_blank">Ken Shamrock vs Pat Smith -- UFC 1</a>

Another crazy one is <a href="http://sherdog.com/cgi-bin/miscmatches.pl?jvt95/jvt95_nakai_vs_gordeau.zip" target="_blank">Yuki Nakai vs Gerard "the eye gouger" Gordeau</a>. You can see Nakai's eye is all fugged up. I can't remember but he either got an intentional thumb or big toe in the eye. He only grapples(jiujitsu) now because he all but lost the eye.

Did you see "CHOKE", the documentary focusing on Rickson Gracie?

That fight is on that DVD....Nakai beat two HUGE opponents...one with an amazing arm bar that he does literally dangling upsidedown from his opponent like an insect.

I recommend that DVD.

yeah, i have the VHS version. Otherwise I would never have known about the great Yuki. I heard a while back that he is 10 times a better grappler now.
