These are republican era photos by the looks of it. 1912-1949 which also had the warlord Era inside of that same timeline (1916-1928).

The Abbot Shi Henglin is pictured here mounted on a horse. He died in 1923, well before WW2.

I don't think that particular rendering of Vajrapani is still there.
Probably what puts these photos to pre 1928.

I've been reading about the greco-buddhist tie in between Heracles (hercules) and the Buddha and that Vajrapani and Heracles may have been one and the same.

Ahaha, awesome. I was going to post this a while ago.

Hercules is a prehistoric hero, as old as they get. It does seem like it is possible that the Jingangs, the warriors who wield the diamond thunderbolt of karmic retribution, as they appear in China are actually from the imagery of Hercules.

This is cool, because Shaolin Kung fu comes from the Jingangs themselves. The story in the villages of Song mountain is not that Damo created Shaolin Kung fu, rather that it comes from Jin Na Luo, the guardian Jingang of Shaolin temple.

In Shaolins history the founder of the Shaolin temple, Batuo, had a disciple called SengChou who was the first Shaolin warrior. Before the time of DaMo. There is even confirmation in a Tang dynasty story about Sengchou praying to a Jingang for 7 days then getting supernatural martial powers and running across the walls of the temple, a tradition the Shaolin maintain.

Anyway, since Shaolin Kung fu is inspiration from the Jingangs themselves, and since the Jingangs are from Hercules....

Cool! Haven't seen that one before, love the lions pelt hat.

Its really bizarre to think of a crossover between buddhism and hellenism isn't it? I guess it shouldn't be, if it got as far as Japan to the East why shouldn't it have gone across Iran and the middle east, it just doesn't quite seem right. I wonder if there are any crossover sutras?!

Another strange one is how China got Manichaeism long time ago and its actually had a large effect on their culture, in fact its really the only place it has survived to this day unbroken. Again, doesn't quite seem right.
