This is a GREAT movie. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

I had wanted to catch it when it was in theaters, but its theatrical release didn't seem to last long, despite the positive reviews. I can guess why. Although at first glance Kubo SEEMs like a children's movie, it really isn't. The story itself is very adult-themed, with a more sophisticated storyline and darker subjects, like killing and death, which are not often the subject of children's movies, at least not so front and center. Therefore, I believe it failed theatrically, mostly because it was marketed as a family or little kids' movie, which IMO it kind of isn't, unless the kids are a little older (maybe 10 and older), or at least more mature for their ages. And there are adults who view all animated movies as kiddie flicks and therefore have no interest in them. Maybe it didn't find that sweet spot with the viewing public(?).

It's my favorite of the modern American animated movies, and I rate it higher than my other favorite, 'Up'. Kubo really captures the emotions of its characters in a way that many live-action movies fail to do.

I would say that if some parents buy Kubo for their really young kids, they *might* be a bit upset at some of the dark subjects. Especially nowadays, when so many parents are hyper-sensitive and over-protective. Although there are LOTS of parents who give their kids violent video games like Grand Theft Auto and others, which are FAR, FAR worse for developing minds than a dark fantasy movie with heart like Kubo.
