Do any of you practice any forms of Japanese martial arts based on internal Chinese arts? In recent years many Japanese have taken an interest in foreign arts, and, in traditional Japanese fashion, changed them and renamed them (some say for the better, due to the Japanese ability to trim away non-essentials). Tai Kyoku Ken (Tai Chi Chuan), Hakko Ken (Bagua), and Kei I Ken (Xing Yi) are particularly popular, as well as Chinese arts mixed with Jujutsu and Taijutsu (Daiwado system). Does anyone study any of these? Comments?

What do you mean renamed them? They're just japanese pronounceations for the chinese characters. While I was in Japan, I took taiji there. It was the weirdest laojia I did. I think they added a buncha stuff to it.

That's right! TaiShingPekkwar is called saruken or onoken or both.

Just out of curiousity, where did you get the translations you are using?

I'm used to hearing Hakke Ken for bagua, and Shin-yi for Hsing-i. Baji is Hakkyoku Ken. There is a japanified form of I chuan which I believe is Taiki-ken.

Saruken just means monkey fist.

Not correcting, just curious. Japanese naming conventions can be weird.

in the US they took muy thai and greco roman and a colage of other stuff to make pancrase.

We invented ninjitsu, defendo (jujitsu), American Karate, Countless, "martial arts" schools.

All those "Celtic" arts which are little more than back issues of blackbelt magazine.

Scars, "Gracie" JJ, Rapid attack systems. All new names for other arts.

Because I'm moving to Japan, in two months.

So, I want to make sure I have all the correct information. It's not like people on the street in Japan know all that much about martial arts anyway, and one of the odd things about japanese is their inability to make intuitive leaps when you mispronounce things.
