Shang-Chi: Master Of Kung Fu Is The Perfect Story For 'Deadpool 2' (With Bonus Hitler Kills) (http://moviepilot.com/posts/3795651)
By Jack Carr ⋅ Posted on February 24th, 2016 at 11:26pm

Deadpool may have killed the Marvel universe, but there's one man who's yet to die at his sword, and his name is Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.

It doesn't take a genius to work out where Shang-chi's talents lie, and a prior hook-up with Deadpool (not that kind of hook-up) makes him a great candidate for a supporting role in Deadpool 2.

If you're not a religious reader of Marvel's one-shot comics, you may have missed Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu #1. The 48-page issue from 2009 is entirely black and white, and includes four vignette stories, the first of which features our friendly neighborhood Deadpool.

http://images-cdn.moviepilot.com/images/c_limit,h_547,w_640/t_mp_quality/oh7dlae2ipkooq0hpd1u/shang-chi-master-of-kung-fu-is-the-perfect-story-for-deadpool-2-with-bonus-hitler-kill-856361.jpg

For the uninitiated, Shang-Chi is the Marvel martial artist who isn't Iron Fist. He has no superpowers whatsoever, but does sport an incredible response time that allows him to dodge bullets, while being the world's greatest living practitioner of kung fu. He's just a little bit awesome.

In the first of the four vignettes, Deadpool and Shang-chi are competing together in a cross-country motorcycle death race. Among their competitors are the Hitler Twins, who are exactly what they sound like...

http://images-cdn.moviepilot.com/images/c_limit,h_901,w_640/t_mp_quality/www0ekyvcp5s3gfinnjc/shang-chi-master-of-kung-fu-is-the-perfect-story-for-deadpool-2-with-bonus-hitler-kill-856394.jpg

The whole vignette is illustrated in black and white, in a style that reminds me of Sin City and the flashbacks in Kill Bill. Obviously I'm not suggesting there's enough material in this wacky drag race to sustain a whole movie, but as an intro or pre-credits sequence with no bearing on the main plot of the film, I would die for a Deadpool and Shang-Chi team-up.

The film's R-rating would also allow a lot of blood to be spilled in classic, pulpy martial arts style. Of course, it would be even more epic if Blade made a cameo (as played by Wesley Snipes — anyone else can suck it), but Marvel is clutching onto his rights like a newborn baby in his mother's bosom. Allow me to dream.

To summarize: If you want to see Deadpool kill Hitler, not once but twice, you should campaign with me for the Master of Kung Fu to get his Deadpool 2 on.

In case you've spent the last two weeks getting tortured by Ajax without wifi, Deadpool 2 is already confirmed to feature Cable. Unfortunately, he won't be played by Keira Knightley, but whatever. The movie is being directed again by Tim Miller and should release sometime in 2018.

Straight from their presentation at CinemaCon, 20th Century Fox has confirmed that the Deadpool sequel is a go and that the entire creative team behind the first film will return. This includes star Ryan Reynolds, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and director Tim Miller. No official release date was given for the Deadpool sequel.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ryan Reynolds stars as the title character alongside T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat and Ed Skrein as Ajax. The film will also feature the mutant Colossus, voiced by Serbian actor Stefan Kapicic.

Deadpool is currently the highest grossing film at the domestic box office for 2016, and is the highest grossing R-rated and highest grossing X-Men film of all time. The film will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on May 10

Deadpool Creative Team Open to Spider-Man Crossover (http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/676303-deadpool-creative-team-open-to-spider-man-crossover#/slide/1)
BY SABINA IBARRA ON APRIL 13, 2016

If there is going to be a team-up fans will want to see, it’s going to be this one.

Spider-Man is set to swing back into action in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Early reception around Tom Holland’s performance indicates that he and the web-slinger will soon be very in demand. The young actor’s stellar performance as Spidey in all of his wise-cracking glory will immediately bring to mind the possibilities of who he could interact with.

Namely his biggest team-up buddy.

During the press day for Fox’s Deadpool Blu-ray release, director Tim Miller and producer Simon Kinberg talked about possibly getting Spider-Man to meet his biggest fan: Deadpool. Miller shared, “Simon and I have been trying to build bridges.”

With all of the deals that have recently started happening, we asked if they could get visitation rights to Sony‘s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Kinberg laughed, “I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it.”

If any guy could vouch this working, it’s Kinberg, who’s produced for both Fox (X-Men) and Disney (Star Wars Rebels). He’s the one who got Fox to take a chance on the long-gestating Deadpool film, which finally paid off and it’s now the highest-grossing R-rated movie. However, at this point in time, Kinberg officially states, “I just don’t know if it would be possible.”

So if the buddy comedy superhero genre starts with Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, which puts Thor and Hulk on a road-trip through the galaxy, then “When Deadpool met Spider-Man” could follow at some point, right? The relationship between Deadpool and Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s most popular. Their comic arcs together are a huge hit with fans. Go on Tumblr and in most Deadpool tag threads, you’ll find Pool crushing hard over Spidey while they take out bad guys with their signature snark. Their on-screen counterparts Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland are perfectly cast for their smart-aleck antics. And if Deadpool’s affections get toned down for the films, Reynolds could at least crack a jailbait joke for Holland’s high school Spidey.

After Sony struck a deal with Disney to share him in Civil War, the studio is poised to see quite the return and will ideally be willing to loan him out more often. Miller lit up at the possibilities they’re entertaining, including the stuff they’re keeping hush for Deadpool 2. “My favorite comic books in the old days used to be like DC vs. Marvel, Teen Titans vs. the X-Men or Teen Titans vs. New Mutants. Justice League vs. the Avengers. This could be something like that,” he added optimistically.

With the Deadpool team being open to the concept and Sony willing to share custody of Peter Parker, we could very well see a future where Wolverine has to deal with both of their sass, or maybe more characters. Kingberg even told CraveOnline they are open to the idea of crossing over the X-Men franchise with Marvel’s The Avengers as well!

Deadpool 2 is a no-brainer: The first film grossed more than $778.6 million worldwide, breaking a number of box office records in the process. Ryan Reynolds will return as the title character with director Tim Miller for the sequel, which producer Simon Kinberg says is looking to kick off production early next year.

“The guys, [original screenwriters Paul] Wernick and Rhett [Reese], are working on the script, and we hope to have the script very soon,” Kinberg told Collider during an interview before the Saturn Awards. Though he couldn’t say much about the timeline for Deadpool 2, he added, “We hope to shoot the movie some time at the beginning of next year.”

Deadpool reintroduced the Merc with a Mouth in a new R-rated setting after his X-Men Origins: Wolverine appearance. Reynolds starred opposite T.J. Miller, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano, and Brianna Hildebrand in the film, which debuted this past February.

Plot details for the next chapter are still under wraps, but the first film’s post-credits scene announced comic book character Cable. Now, actors ranging from Dolph Lundgren to Avatar’s Stephen Lang are vying for the role on social media.

Deadpool 2 currently doesn’t have an official release date, though Fox staked out a couple release dates for yet-to-be-announced films.

EXCLUSIVE: Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna has been cast in Fox/Marvel’s upcoming sequel Deadpool 2, which will see the return of Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with the Mouth. The studio isn’t offering any details on who Kutsuma is playing, other than it’s a key role. David Leitch is at the helm on the film, slated to hit theaters June 1, 2018.

Kutsuna joins previously announced newcomers Josh Brolin who will play Cable, Zazie Beetz as Domino, and Jack Kesy, as well as returnees Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Stefan Kapacic (Colossus) and Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead). The first film made waves at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide with a cume of $783M.

Kutsuna’s recent projects include the indie film Oh Lucy!, opposite Josh Hartnett, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and she co-stars with Jared Leto in the crime thriller The Outsider, which follows a U.S. army deserter (Leto) who joins the Yakuza while living in post-world War II Japan. Kutsuna is repped by McKeon/Myones Entertainment and attorney Mark Stankevich in the U.S., and Oscar Promotion in Japan.

And Gina? Anyone know if Gina is in?

'Deadpool 2’ Stunt Crash Victim ID’d As First African-American Female Pro Road Racer; Director & Fox “Deeply Saddened” – Update (http://deadline.com/2017/08/deadpool-2-stunt-driver-killed-on-set-vancouver-1202148277/)

WRITETHRU, 4:50 PM: A rookie stuntwoman who was killed in a motorcycle crash on the Vancouver set of Deadpool 2 has been identified as the first African-American female professional road racer. Joi “SJ” Harris was doing her first film as a stunt performer, Deadline has learned. A spokesman for ACTRA confirmed her identity to Deadline, though she is not a member of the Canadian actors union.

https://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/joi-harris.jpg

Production on the superhero sequel was shut down immediately after the fatality, and there’s no word on when filming will resume. It’s the second on-set death in North America in a month; John Bernecker suffered massive head injuries in a fall July 12 on the set of The Walking Dead and died shortly afterward.

Details still are coming in, but witnesses said the crew was filming a stunt sequence when Harris lost control of her motorcycle and crashed through a plate-glass window at Shaw Tower on West Waterfront Road near Jack Poole Plaza. The stuntwoman was playing the Domino character in the sequence in the Ryan Reynolds superhero sequel. Actress Zazie Beetz is playing Domino in Deadpool 2. Reynolds tweeted a photo of Beetz in character two weeks ago.

A source close to the situation said Harris, who was an experienced road racer, had been rehearsing the stunt all day Saturday. A studio production source said that there were “two full days of rehearsals over the weekend, and on Monday, they ran the stunt five-plus times before filming.”

An eyewitness told Deadline that, on the last take, the bike seemed to accelerate when it was supposed to slow as she took the corner. Harris was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred today because the Domino character did not wear one in the scene.

Deadline has been told that the crew is enduring very long hours — that includes weekends — and that workers feel like they are being run ragged. “People are exhausted by the schedule,” one crew member told Deadline, noting that they were working multiple 16-hour days in a row. That, however, is disputed by a studio production source, who said the daily shooting schedule on the Vancouver set is 12-13 hours, and there were only two 15-plus-hour days, about three weeks ago.

Reynolds said he was “devastated” by Harris’ death. Producer Simon Kinberg had no comment when contacted by Deadline.

David Leitch, director of Deadpool 2 said in a statement to Deadline: “I’m deeply saddened by the loss of one of our stunt performers today. No words can express how I and the rest of the Deadpool 2 crew feel about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones in this difficult time.” A 20th Century Fox spokesman told Deadline: “We are deeply saddened by the accident that occurred on the set of Deadpool 2 this morning. Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of our crew member during this difficult time.”

According to her online bio, Harris began motorcycle riding in Brooklyn and in 2013 — after logging more than 1,500 training hours — became the first African American woman licensed to actively compete in American Motorcyclist Association races. An injury from an on-track crash while training for her first race forced Harris to wait until 2014 to begin competing in the American Sportbike Racing Association/Championship Cup Series. Since then she had been an outspoken advocate for female racing.

“I’ve learned to accept that I am not the greatest rider that exists and that there is always something to learn when on track and pushing limits,” she said on her website. “Sometimes I’m going to eat it if I’m impatient. Everything takes time. Face your fears — you never know what you can be missing out on.”

The Vancouver Police Department confirmed the death on social media this morning. Law enforcement in Reynolds’ hometown said they are investigating the incident along with the BC Coroner’s Service and WorkSafeBC, British Columbia’s version of the U.S.’ Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said the city will continue to support the filming there when the crew recovers from the emotional trauma. “We are extremely saddened to hear of the tragic incident that took the life of a stuntwoman working on the set of Deadpool 2 downtown earlier today,” he said in a statement. “Our condolences go out to her family and friends, and to all those working on set who have been impacted by the loss of their colleague. We will continue to support the crew and production as they work to recover emotionally and as they continue their next phase of filming.”

As previously mentioned, today’s accident marks the second stunt-related on-set death in North America in about a month; stuntman John Bernecker suffered massive head injuries in a fall July 12 on the set of The Walking Dead and later died at Atlanta Medical Center. That was believed to be the first stunt-related death in the United States in more than 17 years.

The veteran stuntman was doing a fight scene for the zombie apocalypse drama with actor Austin Amelio on a balcony when he fell about 30 feet to a concrete floor, just missing the safety pad and landing on his head and neck.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and SAG-AFTRA opened investigations into Bernecker’s death. Mike D’Aquino, a spokesman for the regional OSHA office in Atlanta, said that the investigation could take up to six months to complete. The Coweta County Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s Department have ruled the death an accident and closed their respective cases into the matter.

AMC temporarily halted production on Season 8 of the zombie apocalypse series in the wake of the accident.

SAG-AFTRA presidential candidate and veteran stuntman Pete Antico has blasted union leadership for failure to provide protection to the stunt community.

Antico issued a blistering statement to Variety on Tuesday, a day after the death of stuntwoman Joi “SJ” Harris on the set of “Deadpool 2” and a month after John Bernecker’s death on “The Walking Dead” set. Antico said both deaths are tragic.

“The stunt coordinators on those sets have vast experience tenure and are at the top of their game,” he said. “We have not received much information regarding the details of the incidents; however, I do know that the stunt community is not protected in our collective bargaining agreement and has not been for years. There are no qualifications for a stunt coordinator in our collective bargaining agreement. There never was. That is unconscionable. A producer can hire anyone who says they are a coordinator and most of the time you get what you pay for.”

Antico noted that there are no ambulances required on a set when action is being performed — a provision that he contends should be mandatory. And he has been alleging that changes in travel provisions in the recently ratified contract are problematic, pointing to president Gabrielle Carteris and national exec director David White.

“I can’t believe our current leadership under Gabrielle Carteris and David White gutted all safety out of our contract and actually pushed ratifying a deal that is a recipe for many more accidents and future deaths,” Antico said. “The rest periods given away in the travel provisions of our contract that was in full force for over 50 years have been given away. This means they can bring actors and stunt people in with a 10-hour rest period instead of a 12-hour rest period and coordinators who generally work 14- to 15-hour days on film and TV will not get the rest they need to ensure safety on the set.”

Antico said that coordinators are often prepping action in advance, many times with complex rigging involved in film, or with multiple TV shows in advance, resulting in turnaround times as short as nine hours.

“This practice is unsafe,” Antico said. “This lack of rest affects actors and the crew alike and is unacceptable and I am asking the labor commissioner to get involved.”

SAG-AFTRA issued a statement Monday in response to Harris’ death: “We are all grieving the tragic death of a stunt performer on the ‘Deadpool 2’ set today. Our hearts and prayers are with her family, friends and fellow cast and crew members. The safety of our members and other production professionals on set is a core concern and top priority for SAG-AFTRA. Accordingly, we are sending a field representative to Vancouver and are investigating the incident.”

Antico has received endorsements from Sylvester Stallone, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mickey Rourke, and Andrew Dice Clay, and asserts that he received the backing from the actors because they understand “the value of human life above all things, as well as ethics, principles, and honest business practices.”

Antico added that the government should intervene: “I am calling on the government to get involved to protect all members in our labor organization. I believe our current contract to be grossly negligent in the field of safety and feel that appropriate charges should be filed to protect us.”

Antico has been a longtime critic of SAG-AFTRA’s elected leadership and its executive staff. He has credits on dozens of films, including “Pearl Harbor,” “Danny Collins,” “Daredevil,” “Training Day,” “Monster Trucks,” and “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”

Antico is one of five candidates seeking the post along with current president Carteris, national board member Esai Morales, and independents Robert B. Martin Jr. and Marilyn Monrovia. Ballots went out last month to about 144,000 members and must be returned by Aug. 24.

There was a death on TWD (http://variety.com/2017/biz/news/walking-dead-stuntman-safety-1202499312/) recently too.

The scene in Vancouver for the Aug. 14 stunt involving motorcycle racer S.J. Harris.

Producers are said to have ignored stunt coordinators’ concerns about the motorcyclist amid a desire for a race and gender match.
In the days leading up to the Deadpool 2 motorcycle stunt that killed racer S.J. Harris on Aug. 14 in Vancouver, the crew was said to be growing increasingly agitated and nervous about the potential for something to go wrong.

The 20th Century Fox sequel’s producers had been exerting pressure to have the 40-year-old Harris, who had raced professionally but had never worked on a film, perform that day’s stunt because, as an African-American, she was a believable stand-in for Zazie Beetz, who portrays Domino in the film. But several crewmembers warned the producers that Harris wasn’t ready, a production source tells The Hollywood Reporter.

“She was improving, but I was watching her and, oh my God, I thought, ‘It’s just a matter of time before she crashes into a wall or runs somebody over,’” says one stunt performer who had been training Harris the day before the crash that killed her. A member of the stunt team alerted the movie’s producers to these concerns but was ignored, according to the source who trained Harris.

From a technical perspective, the stunt was relatively straightforward. It called for a rider sitting astride a Ducati 939 Hyperstrada motorcycle to exit a building, descend a ramp over three small stairs and stop on a nearby landing. For a stunt professional, it would have been a cinch. But Harris had never even been on a film shoot before.

And the crash occurred on the first live take. The accident has drawn outrage and tough questions from the Hollywood stunt community. “The producers put pressure to have somebody of the same sex and ethnicity in a position she wasn’t qualified to be in,” says Conrad Palmisano, a veteran stunt coordinator and second unit director with 47 years in the entertainment industry, including credits on Sleepless in Seattle and 21 Jump Street. Palmisano says he has been in close touch with several people who were on the Deadpool 2 set that day. “The stunt coordinators caved to the pressure. All the stunt people could do was take it to their higher-ups. They’re going to follow their chain of command.”

Fox and a rep for Deadpool 2 director David Leitch (himself a former stunt coordinator) declined to comment. The film restarted production days after the accident and is on track for its June 1 release.

According to a preliminary report issued by WorkSafeBC, the Canadian equivalent of OSHA, Harris “continued driving beyond the planned stopping spot on the stairway landing and continued to drive down a second ramp built over the bottom stairs and across the roadway.” Still astride the motorcycle, the report continues, Harris rode into a concrete sidewalk curb, where she “was thrown off the motorcycle and propelled through a plate-glass window of a building.”

Several people were forced to jump out of the way of the speeding bike. Immediately after she crashed, many ran over to offer first aid and saw that Harris was grievously injured, according to people on the set.

Whatever happened, those who had worked closely with Harris have apparently come to the conclusion that it was likely rider error. The question for investigators is, why was she put in this position? She had crashed the bike on two separate occasions days before the accident, say two people familiar with the shoot.

And Harris was the second person enlisted to do the job, as the production had earlier hired another woman who hadn’t performed well on the motorcycle in preparation for the stunt, a source says.

“If the movie’s producers had to go outside of the normal stunt community to find someone who was both qualified and resembles the actress, that speaks to a problem of lack of diversity of stunt performers,” says Darnell Hunt, the dean of Social Sciences at UCLA who helps produce the annual “Hollywood Diversity Report,” which comes out before the Oscars every year.

Harris’ death is the second fatal on-set accident in less than a month. In July, stuntman John Bernecker was killed when he fell off a warehouse balcony on the Georgia set of The Walking Dead. Before that, the last on-set fatality occurred in spring 2014 during filming of Midnight Rider, when camerawoman Sarah Jones was killed by a train on a bridge trestle, also in Georgia. Jones’ death inspired a large community of safety-minded professionals to gather regularly online to monitor safety-related incidents.

“I cringed every time she went out,” says the person who had been working with Harris, “Like, when is she going to crash?” This person eventually left the set and told the producers she wanted nothing more to do with the movie. “They were warned, yes!”

Iron Fist‘s Lewis Tan may have been revealed to be part of Deadpool 2‘s cast as Shatterstar. The marketing campaign for Fox’s highly anticipated sequel may not have aired a spot during the Super Bowl, but they kicked off this week’s coverage with a live-tweet of the big game. In the following days, a new poster was revealed and a viral site launched. The biggest piece came with the release of Deadpool 2‘s first official trailer, and it did much more than just introduce Josh Brolin as Cable.

One of the moments that stuck out to fans the most was an ensemble shot of Deadpool and other mutants ready to leap out of a plane. Zazie Beetz’s Domino was featured there, but the shot also revealed Terry Crews to be part of the cast – possibly as G.W. Bridge. Two additional team members were featured as well. While one is difficult to identify, the other is widely believed to be Shatterstar – and now we may know who is playing him.

Twitter user HELLB0YS shared a side by side of Shatterstar from the trailer and Iron Fist actor Lewis Tan along with Tan’s Twitter activity that may indicate he’s part of the cast, too. Shatterstar in the trailer does resemble Tan, but it isn’t clear enough to confirm on its own. However, Tan was liking multiple Shatterstar related images earlier today – ones that he appears to have since unliked after the internet sleuthing began.

Since this isn’t the most concrete evidence, this alone is far from confirmation that Tan is indeed part of Deadpool 2‘s cast. However, in doing further digging, Tan also follows Deadpool himself Ryan Reynolds and the sequel’s director David Leitch on Twitter, and did so one right after the other. He also follows newly revealed cast member Terry Crews. Who follows who on Twitter isn’t the best way to determine if an actor is part of another project, but there’s more. Near the end of November, Tan revealed on Twitter that he recently worked with Lewis on a project. Crews and Tan have never worked on the same project before, and Deadpool 2 wrapped in October.

When all of this evidence is put together, it appears more likely than not that Tan is indeed part of Deadpool 2‘s ensemble, and likely playing Shatterstar. Early reports on Deadpool 2 claimed Shatterstar would be introduced via a post-credits scene, but that was quickly debunked by screenwriter Rhett Reese. It may not be a post-credits intro, but Tan does appear to have a costume extremely similar to Shatterstar. Regardless of whether or not this is Shatterstar, it could be a big role for Tan moving forward if this team has any ties to X-Force‘s future roster. This has yet to be confirmed, but there’s mounting evidence behind Tan being involved. If this is the case, hopefully it will be confirmed sooner rather than later.

I met Lewis in Dublin while doing a set visit for Into the Badlands. We had dinner together, along with several other cast members. He hinted that he was about to join the MCU but couldn't disclose too much more because he was under NDA.

Ladies and gents, we told you that there would be an LGBTQ character in Deadpool 2 (besides Ryan Reynolds’s titular pansexual character), and we’re more than pleased to introduce his actor to you.

Though the official list of who’s in the movie and what roles they’ll be playing hasn’t been released, U.K. actor Lewis Tan himself spread the news of his role.

In an Instagram pic, shared below, Tan hinted towards his role with the now famous shot of Deadpool and his group of X-Force heroes. Tan captioned the picture, “The gang is all here. Recognize someone? #xforce #deadpool2”

Given the fact that 3 and a half of the five people’s faces are clearly visible, most are guessing that Tan’s implying his role is the one face we haven’t seen but who’s name we already knew. Lewis Tan will be playing a Bisexual superhero named Shatterstar.

If you haven’t already read our post sharing that Shatterstar would be in the film, we’ll give you a quick rundown of who the character is.

Shatterstar originated as a time-traveling warrior from another planet. Once he found his way on Earth and a part of the X-Men affiliate team called the X-Force, Shatterstar found himself evolving as a person. Not only did he gain a new grip on life, but he also developed a close-friendship-turned-romance with fellow Bisexual mutant Rictor.

In 1991, the two went through a rollercoaster of other relationships and heroic trials before they reconnected and shared what became the first gay kiss in Marvel comics.

Now, actor Lewis Tan will get to represent that historic character on the big screen in Fox’s Deadpool 2.

The Iron Fist and Into the Badlands actor seems to be excited for the role and has plenty of experience wielding two swords and using them in action-packed entertainment. We look forward to see him bring Shatterstar to life in the new film that comes out on May 18.

Headlines from China: ‘Deadpool 2’ Hasn’t Passed The Chinese Censorship (http://chinafilminsider.com/headlines-from-china-deadpool-2-hasnt-passed-the-chinese-censorship/)

‘Deadpool 2’ Made Strong Debut in the U.S. But Hasn’t Scored China Release

American superhero film Deadpool 2 opened in the United States last Friday and had a successful opening weekend box office, raking in 125 million domestically. In South Korea, the film has been viewed over 1 million times in theater within four days. In Hong Kong, it also set new box office records as an R-rated film. However, it’s still unclear if the film will be released in Chinese theaters. According to sources familiar with the matter, 20th Century Fox, which has successfully released several R-rated films, including Logan, Alien: Covenant, and The Shape of Water, in China, hasn’t managed to make the film pass the Chinese censorship.

It's because of what happens to Shatterstar, isn't it? ISN'T IT? :D

This is brilliant marketing. I'm sorely tempted to see this, even though the holiday rush keeps my movie-in-theaters dance card pretty full.

‘Once Upon A Deadpool’: Ryan Reynolds (and Fred Savage) On Franchise’s PG-13 Plunge (https://deadline.com/2018/11/deadpool-ryan-reynolds-disney-pg13-marvel-1202495981/)

Fox

EXCLUSIVE All Fox wants for Christmas are 12 more days of Deadpool — that’s certainly one valid interpretation of the studio’s plan to revamp, rename and re-release the year’s biggest R-rated hit, Deadpool 2, as a PG-13 film called Once Upon A Deadpool. There’s more to it than that, however. Deadline has all the details about the studio’s unconventional plan — a plan that may have intriguing relevance when viewed through the prism of the Disney-Fox merger and the future of the red-hot Deadpool franchise.

First some of those details: Once Upon a Deadpool will have a limited-engagement that begins Dec. 12 and concludes on Christmas Eve, positioning it as a box-office play aimed at young teens on holiday break from school. The lion’s share of Once Upon Deadpool is footage from Deadpool 2 that has been edited to meet PG-13 thresholds of violence and language. There’s also new footage in the form of a framing sequence that was conceived by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Working with a small film crew, Reynolds and his cohorts filmed all the framing scenes in a single hectic day of guerrilla-style filmmaking.

https://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/unnamed1.png?w=300&h=34
**** Cancer

There’s a major charity component to the limited-engagement release, too, as Reynolds explained to Deadline that for every ticket sold $1 will go to the audaciously named F-ck Cancer campaign, which will be temporarily renamed “Fudge Cancer” for the purpose of tie-in fundraising effort.

It’s funny to note that Deadpool is such a native of hard-R filmmaking that even its charity partner has an f-bomb name that requires editing to soften it for a PG audience. Reynolds famously championed the idea of a Deadpool movie for a decade and maintained his position that the scabby, subversive superhero from the pages of Marvel Comics could be a commercial winner — but only if it bravely bucked the Hollywood mindset that superhero franchises naturally belong in the PG-13 pack.

The actor was right and Fox’s faith in the formula was rewarded with a history-making franchise. The February 2016 opening weekend of Deadpool ($132.4 million in domestic box office) stands as the biggest bow by an R-rated film in Hollywood history. Second on that all-time list? The May 2018 opening of Deadpool 2 (S125 million). The sequel finished its 22-week theatrical release in October with a global haul of $734 million.

Even with that success, Hollywood has been reluctant to release R-rated superhero films. Sony’s Venom, for instance, was scrubbed to a PG-13 level after considerable internal debate about the best balance between content and audience reach. When Venom set a new record for an October opening weekend it likely added considerable steam to Fox’s interest in taking Deadpool to a younger audience. The masked mutant mercenary character was one of the top-selling Halloween costumes this year and is popular among grade-school fans that know him from toys, video games, comics, Slurpee cups, etc.

“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” Reynolds told Deadline on Monday. “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…”

https://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/deadpool.png?w=300&h=169

Savage, of Wonder Years fame, co-stars with Reynolds in the framing sequence for Once Upon A Deadpool, which hijacks its bedtime-story set-up from The Princess Bride, the 1987 classic that also famously featured Savage as a child actor. In eight scenes were filmed that will be used as interstitial additions to the existing sequel’s footage. The running time of Once Upon A Deadpool is abut three minutes shorter than Deadpool 2 but Fox declined to be more specific about the new footage duration.

Reached last week by Deadline, Savage was still playing along with the spoof concept and the irreverent meta-spirit of the franchise: “While my participation in this film was anything but voluntary. I am happy to learn that Fudge Cancer will be the beneficiary of this shameless cash grab.”

For hit-hungry Fox, Deadpool 2 was the studio’s biggest bright spot this year. The sequel ranks as the fifth highest grossing film of 2018 but no other Fox release cracked the Top 30. The reconstituted PG-13 version of the hit offers the studio a chance of a “Christmas bonus” and could also be repurposed as the franchise’s first viable play in China. The response to the PG-13 repackaging is also being watched closely by the leadership at Disney and its Marvel Studios and may inform the way they incorporate Deadpool into their plans.

With wall-to-wall violence and relentless profanities, the Deadpool films present a tricky fit for Disney, which is banking on the cache of Marvel’s brand not just for feature films but as a core piece of its ambitious subscription streaming service. That service launches next year as a family-safe gateway to Disney’s content. Will Disney keep Deadpool at arm’s length (as a discrete Fox brand, for instance), tame him down for duty in PG13 fare or find some hybrid of those approaches? Time will tell.

The hollow-point humor of Deadpool is the cinematic superhero equivalent of an Eminem album (adult in its content, gleefully sop****ric in its tone) or Beavis and ******** (retooled, perhaps, as Beaten and Headbutt). “We’ve driven a wedge between parents and their tweens and we hear about it all the time,” Reese said. “This [PG-13 revamp] is a way to try to appease those parents.”

Reese and Wernick hatched the idea of using the Princess Bride motif and Reynolds made the call to Fox to pitch the idea to executives who eagerly embraced the notion as a way to test the flagship franchise in PG-13 waters. Still, the writers know the challenge facing the project is one of their own making. “Deadpool has been a unique property and, by definition, what’s in a Deadpool movie is all the stuff that can’t be in any other superhero movie.”

That’s about to change, one way or another, on Dec. 12. (The same weekend as Aquaman from Warner Bros. and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from Sony.) There’s not much in the way of historical precedents that lend themselves to comparison but the closest may be Saturday Night Fever. The December 1977 hit drama earned its R-rating with drug use and prominent sexual assault and abortion themes but appealed to younger moviegoers with its hit soundtrack and cultural cache. A PG version was released in 1979 and added $8.9 million on top of the film’s original haul of $85.2 million.

On Monday, the always-witty Reynolds embraced the Saturday Night Fever history as a good omen for Once Upon A Deadpool. “Eighty percent of Deadpool 3 takes place at a 1970’s disco so it only makes sense we’d find a connection to Saturday Night Fever.,” the actor joked. “Plus, Deadpool loves Stayin’ Alive. It’s literally his only superpower.”

'Deadpool 2'

The unexpected feat comes after the PG-13 cut of the film was allowed to play in China.
In another happy ending for the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool 2 — including its family-friendly version — has crossed $784 million at the worldwide box office to become the highest-grossing title in 20th Century Fox's stable of X-Men movies.

The previous champ in the X-Men universe was the first Deadpool (2016), which collected $783 million in global ticket sales to become the top-grossing R-rated pic of all time, not adjusted for inflation.

Deadpool 2, produced by and starring Ryan Reynolds in the titular role, first hit theaters in May 2018.

In early December, Reynolds and 20th Century Fox unleashed a family-friendly version of the sequel, Once Upon a Deadpool, which is rated PG-13 instead of R. The move, although it was unorthodox, paid off.

Grosses for Once Upon a Deadpool have been added to Deadpool 2's running total, in keeping with the traditional practice for rereleases. Before the rerelease, Deadpool 2's global earnings stood at roughly $738 million.

The rerelease has generated north of $45 million in ticket sales. The vast majority of that has come from China, where Deadpool 2 took in north of $40 million in its first 10 days. The first Deadpool was never allowed to play in China; the sequel was allowed in because of the family-friendly version.

Last month, Reynolds traveled to China to promote the film's Jan. 25 debut.

Disney confirm Deadpool's future following Fox merger (https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/deadpool-disney-fox-merger-ryan-reynolds-mcu-marvel-a8854281.html)
'You'll be seeing more of Deadpool in the years to come'
Jack Shepherd @JackJShepherd

Disney has confirmed that Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool has survived the company's merger with Fox.

Despite the Merc with a Mouth being the antithesis to the family-friendly films Disney are known for releasing, they confirmed at CinemaCon that the current iteration of Deadpool will live on.

Alan Horn, the studio's chairman, was midway through their presentation when tweets from Reynolds' social media account, poking fun at the merger, were shown on screen.

"You'll be seeing more of Deadpool in the years to come," he reportedly said.

Part of the presentation also included a video of various Disney properties intermixed with Fox ones, including a shot of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/thumbnails/image/2019/01/16/09/x-force.jpg?w230

"The truth is I'm excited for all of them," he said. "And it's not just the marquee names, you know. There are hundreds of names on those agreements and the fact that Marvel is as close as we may ever get now to having access to all of the characters is something I've been dreaming about for my almost 20 years at Marvel. It's very exciting."

Also during the Disney conference, new footage from Avengers: Endgame debuted, as did footage of Will Smith's Gennie in Aladdin.

Hey, that's not how you spell "Genie"

Fox Safety Errors Contributed to Fatal ‘Deadpool’ Crash, Report Finds (https://variety.com/2019/biz/news/worksafe-bc-report-deadpool-2-joi-harris-fox-errors-1203356611/)

Twentieth Century Fox committed several safety errors that contributed to the fatal motorcycle crash on the set of “Deadpool 2,” according to a British Columbia workplace safety investigation.

Joi Harris, a stunt rider, was killed on Aug. 14, 2017, when she lost control of her motorcycle and crashed into the side of a building in downtown Vancouver.

Investigators from WorkSafe B.C. allege that the studio made a long list of errors, including failing to assess the risks of the stunt, failing to allow her to wear a helmet, and failing to set up barriers that would have kept her motorcycle inside the film set.

The agency said it is now considering what penalty should be assessed.

In a statement, a Fox spokesperson took issue with the report, and said that the studio had stepped up its safety measures in the wake of Harris’ death.

“Safety is our top priority, and while we respectfully disagree with some of the report’s findings, Fox thoroughly reviewed its stunt safety protocols immediately following the tragic accident and has revised and implemented enhanced safety procedures and enforcement,” the spokesperson said.

Michael Buckley, an attorney representing Harris’ family, confirmed in April that the family had settled all claims against the studio. “The folks at 21st Century Fox were very professional and responsible in the manner in which they addressed our client’s claim,” Buckley said at the time.

Harris had experience as a motorcycle track racer, but had not done film stunts before. The accident report alleges that Fox failed to give her a new worker orientation, which would have covered safety measures such as wearing a helmet.

According to the report, several other stunt performers saw Harris’ “stabbing” or “grabbing” at the motorcycles brakes during rehearsals, causing the bike to skid unsafely. An additional ramp was added to give her more room to brake safely, before the fatal stunt occurred.

The report cites a regulation that mandated that riders wear helmets. Following the crash, all stunt performers wore helmets during motorcycle shots.

Deadpool 3 Is In Development at Disney, Ryan Reynolds Announces (https://www.cbr.com/deadpool-3-development-disney-ryan-reynolds-announces/)
by L.D. Nolan – on Dec 27, 2019 in Movies, Movie News

https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deadpool-avengers-header.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=798&h=407&dpr=1.5

Deadpool 3 is in the works at Marvel Studios.

During an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIxWYuIb5ng), Reynolds was asked about a potential third film. "Yeah we're working on it right now with the whole team," Reynolds replied. "We're over at Marvel [Studios] now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It's kinda crazy. So yeah, we're working on it."

Reynolds two Deadpool films are among the highest-grossing R-rated films ever made. The first movie made over $782 million worldwide at the box office and currently holds am 85% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel, released in 2018, earned $785 million and has an 84% on the aforementioned review aggregator.

The future of Reynolds' Deadpool film was left in doubt after Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which saw the former regaining the rights to many of Marvel's most popular heroes, including the X-Men and Fantastic Four. However, this announcement leaves unclear just what Deadpool's future at Disney and with the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be. Disney CEO Bob Iger previously indicated Deadpool's films could remain R-rated at Disney. There's no indication at this time what the merger might mean for the X-Force film that was in the works prior to the acquisition.

No potential release date was given or Reynolds Deadpool 3 with Disney. Not going to split this into its own indie thread just yet. Still waiting on more confirmation.
