Get ready to see Danny Trejo on the small screen. He will soon be the host of a new pop culture series titled Man at Arms. The series will arrive in June.

El Rey Network shared a press release detailing the new series. Check that out below.
“Danny Trejo (Machete, Sons of Anarchy) will host the upcoming El Rey Network original unscripted series “Man at Arms.” The eight-part series will premiere on the network in early June 2017. As host of “Man at Arms”, Trejo will introduce each episode, preside over the expert roundtable of builders, historians and martial artists and participate in the weapons testing phase to see how much destruction they can cause.

“Who better to host a show celebrating iconic weapons in pop culture than ‘Machete’ himself, Danny Trejo?” asked El Rey Network president and G.M. Daniel Tibbets. “Danny is a longtime friend of our founder, Robert Rodriguez and also of El Rey Network. He brings the right mix of mentorship, humor and knowledge to ‘Man at Arms’.”

El Rey Network will bring the popular and celebrated digital series, “Man at Arms” to television in a co-production deal with DEFY Media, the studio that created “Man at Arms”. Iconic weapons and armor have played a starring role in some of the most memorable scenes in movie history and can be found throughout pop culture, from movies to video games to comics to TV shows. In each episode of “Man at Arms”, a team of expert craftsmen skillfully reproduce famed weapons and armor from scratch, using both the technology that would have been available at the time such weapons and armor were originally created, as well as state-of-the-art technologies beyond the original forgers’ wildest imaginations, to create historical, modern, and mythological works of martial art. Each masterwork is then tested by experts for its strength and real-world functionality. Whether it slices, shoots, smashes, stabs, blocks, parries, or disarms, viewers will get a first-hand look at what kind of force each marvelous masterpiece can unleash. DEFY Media’s award-winning digital series, which recently celebrated its 100th episode, consistently averages over 1.5MM views per episode and has built a vast and passionate fan community.

“Man at Arms” is produced by DEFY, led by heads of Television/OTT Production and Development Jared Hoffman and Chris Pollack, Chief Content Officer Barry Blumberg, and El Rey Network. Hoffman and Pollack serve as series executive producers and showrunners. Blumberg will also serve as an executive producer.”

El Rey picks up “Man at Arms,” “Rite of Passage” (http://realscreen.com/2017/01/16/el-rey-picks-up-man-at-arms-rite-of-passage/)

Texas-based lifestyle net, El Rey Network, has picked up two original unscripted series, Man At Arms and Rite of Passage.

The digital series Man At Arms will be brought to television in a copro with Defy Media, the digital studio behind the series. El Rey has ordered eight, one-hour episodes of the series where expert craftsmen reproduce famed weapons and armor from scratch. Using technology from the time they were originally produced, along with state-of-art technology, the craftsmen create “historical, modern and mythological works of martial art,” a statement from the network said. The weaponry is then tested by experts for functionality and strength.

Man at Arms will be produced by Defy, led by heads of Television/OTT production and development Jared Hoffman and Chris Pollack, chief content officer Barry Blumberg and El Rey Network. Hoffman and Pollack will also serve as series’ executive producers and showrunners.

David Sherman at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment negotiated the deal.

El Rey has also picked up the 12-part docuseries Rite of Passage. Award-winning producer, reporter and cameraman Tim Noonan (pictured) scours the earth, immersing himself in local cultures where he participates in the rituals that define the transition to manhood. These rituals land Noonan in environments like the anaconda-infested plains of Venezuela, and in Cameroon, West Africa, where he crawls headfirst into the home of a giant rock python to wrestle it from its lair.

Seven Productions, a division of The Seven Network in Australia, produced Rite of Passage.

Both Man at Arms and Right of Passage will air in the first half of 2017 on the El Rey Network.

Talking with Robert Rodriguez about Danny Trejo & their new show ‘Man at Arms’ (http://screenertv.com/television/man-at-arms-danny-trejo-robert-rodriguez-test-iconic-weapons/)

What we see on TV and in the movies is seldom an accurate depiction of real life — but over time, it’s easy for us to assume, once we’ve seen it enough times, that a given trope is accurate and realistic. Watching the victories of actors who aren’t trained in martial arts, or wield their guns and swords with improper form, naturally makes us feel like we could just pick up a weapon and kick some butt — even if we know intellectually that we’d probably just end up maiming ourselves before the fight even started.

But the violent delights of television and film aren’t meant as training videos: They’re meant to evoke feelings and conversation. We don’t watch Jack Bauer go to the bathroom on “24” and we don’t need to see every step in gun maintenance to understand the story — in fact, that would be a drawback, in the moment. But if you love TV and film, you’re also going to be interested in how it’s made: Not just how those props and sequences are created, but what the “real world” equivalent is like.

Which is where we meet up with our old friend Danny Trejo, and his longtime collaborator, the iconic action filmmaker Robert Rodriguez: If anybody could be expected to lead us on a tour of pop-culture violence, weaponry and practical magic, it’s these two. They have been bringing out fantasies to life for decades, and it’s obvious they keep at it because they love this stuff as much as we do — an explanation from them is like getting a magician’s explanation of the modern art of action… And from overjoyed, ebullient, master magicians at that.

You can’t hear either name without instantly envisioning the stellar weapon sequences in “From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, “Machete,” “Grindhouse” and even the youth-friendly “Spy Kids” films. And now, the “Rebel without a Crew” author and the man who’s infamous for his villainous roles are teaming up with guys from the hit digital series, “Man at Arms,” recreating it on Rodriguez’s El Rey Network. The eight-part mini is hosted by Trejo, and features a team of experts that will showcase how those iconic weapons are both created and correctly used.

https://tribzap2it.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/danny-trejo-gif-desperado.gif?w=1100

We visited the set of “Man at Arms” while they were filming the series’ action sequences in Los Angeles, and got to speak with the always charming, 49-year-old American producer, writer, director, composer and film encyclopedia known as Robert Rodriguez at length.

We love a good bromance, and so our first question was about how and when he first met Trejo.

Robert Rodriguez: I was making a movie called “Desperado,” and I had a character who was a knife-throwing guy, and I didn’t want him to talk. Just an assassin, with these little knives that I designed to be like crucifixes with blades, and he would silently kill people. I needed someone spooky and menacing because he wouldn’t have any words — which is my favorite kind of acting. It was a tall order.

I remember seeing [Trejo’s] picture, and it was picture from a prison show. He hadn’t done that many movies yet. But he walked in, and he had that face and that demeanor. He didn’t talk, because he had no lines — but he sat down, and I handed him one of my knives and I just said, “You got the part.” This was back in 1994.

It wasn’t until later, when we were on set, that I got to know him. He was like “Hey, give me some lines, Coach!” and I was like, “NO!” Because by then I knew what such a nice guy he was. If he opened his mouth, he’d blow what I was trying to do! That whole mystique. He looks really menacing, but he’s a puppy dog. He’s got such a natural magnetism.

I was like, “You’re going to be in an action film” — I had the idea for “Machete” before “Desperado” — and I put him in movie after movie after movie until finally, he was big enough star to have Robert DeNiro be his co-star!”

The inspiration for “Man at Arms” actually came from Rodgriguez’s son, Rebel.

I love weapons in movies. In “Desperado,” he’s got a suitcase full of them — but while working on “Kill Bill 2,” I did the music for it… I really dug the art of making a Hanzo blade, legendary blade, and you wonder — what magic is that: Forging.

I remember showing it to my boys — it was about the only scene I could show them, because they were so young — and Rebel really sparked to it. And now years later, he’s forging weapons, studying Japanese warfare, wants to learn how to make knives… He’s got a real passion and drive for it.

And then I heard about this internet show, “Man at Arms,” and when I asked if he’d heard about it, he was like “Yeah! It’s a great show!” And then I wanted to bring it to El Rey, like: “If you’re into, I’m into it.”

It really fits into the El Rey Network. This show embodies honoring traditions, showing not only the historical context [of weaponry], but how it fits into modern pop culture. It really makes you appreciate the art. Even something as basic as a Japanese-style kitchen knife takes a tremendous amount of work, passion, brute strength and patience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8AsONB6F4s

Ilya Alekzeyev and Matt Stagmer, of the original YouTube series, are helping Rodriguez craft the revamp for El Rey — and they impressed on us the amount of time and skill that goes into recreating these weapons on the show:

Matt Stagmer: When you are working with items that are part of a specific tradition, there’s no cutting corners. And since we’re doing testing, it has to be exactly right — not only [to respect] that culture, but… To perform as it would have.

Ilya Alekzeyev: Consequently, there’s danger in the testing. The modern person has a skewed sense of expectations, of how weapons perform. The materials’ historical source would appear sub-par to us as people living in the 21st century. We, as craftsmen, know how it was made — and that’s how we make it — but it doesn’t mean that the particular weapon will perform well. Many swords in history failed because of the old-school material; there were errors in the forging that experienced smiths didn’t notice.

https://tribzap2it.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/spy-kids-gif.gif?w=1100

The goal of this TV series is not just to entertain, of course — and after seeing some of the weapons testing done live, we can assure viewers it’s very educational. In fact, few shows and movies pass the litmus test of how weapons are supposed to be used.

Alekzeyev: I can’t say any of them pass! I understand that the job of a person making the movie is making a work of art that captures the imagination, so they use flashy swordfighting… Like the handgun fighting in “Equilibrium” — they’re are creating a sense of atmosphere and wonder. So I don’t even look at like Oh, is this plausible? Of course it’s not! It’s fantasy.”

https://tribzap2it.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/equilibrium-gif.gif?w=1100

“I look at Japanese swords the way someone looks at a great painting. The brush strokes already present. The form, everything,” says Alekzeyev — and nd they’re not cheap! “If you order a sword from Japan form a modern maker, it varies between $4,000-8,000. And very often, you don’t get the handle or grip. It’s just the blade. Everything else is exchangeable…”

But “Man at Arms” isn’t solely looking to kill the movie mystique — quite the opposite, of course: “What’s cool about this show,” Rodriguez says, “Is that it attacks these myths in movies… Like, you can’t carry a katana on your back. It looks cool cinematically, but it really is supposed to be on your side. So it chews up a lot of things we’ve gotten used to seeing in the movies. It’s entertainment, but it’s education, and teaches you to appreciate the craftsmanship.”

Which goes for the story you’re watching, we think, as much as the individual props. As spoiler-phobic as we can sometimes be, here at Screener — and how little we enjoy nitpicking for its own sake — we also love knowing how things are made, and learning more about their real-world equivalents, for exactly that reason: Knowing how well a story has been crafted, peeking behind the curtain at all the working gears and levers, provides just another way to love them, in the end. And with tour guides this knowledgeable and delightful, it’s easy to love the lesson for its own sake.

“Man at Arms” premieres in June 2017 on the El Rey Network.

I only have one episode with Crystal. It's the finale, episode 8. She does some of the testing for some of the weapons on episodes that I am in, but we really only had the two scenes together in the finale episode.

Episode Descriptions:

101 “Weapons of Kung Fu” – June 8 at 8:00pm et
Ancient China developed the honorable martial arts of Kung Fu and the weapons needed incredible precision and expert handling. The ji is a hybrid between a spear and a dagger-axe that has been used for over 3000 years. The wind and fire blade is used in pairs to slash, stab or disarm an opponent.

102 “Weapons of the Gods” – June 15 at 8:00pm et

103 “African War Blades” – June 22 at 8:00pm et
Since the beginning of time, African civilizations have crafted some of the most lethal weapons known to the world including the Membele knife, a curved throwing dagger that was often carved to resemble a bird’s head and the Shotel, a sickle-shaped sword used to hook and rip invading soldiers off their horses.

104 “Weapons of the Mongol Horde” June 29 at 8:00pm et
The fearsome Mongol Horde carved out one of the largest empires in the ancient world through their ability to wield deadly weapons on horseback. The composite bow has a range of 820 feet and the ballista could shoot a heavy arrow with more accuracy than a catapult.

105 “New World Warriors” – July 6 at 8:00pm et
The Aztec Empire developed some of the simplest but most effective weapons to assist them in their savage battlefield tactics including the macuahuitl, a wooden sword with its sides embedded with prismatic blades sharper than steel razor blades and the Mayan’s long distance weapon – the atlatl.

106 “Weapons of the Pharaohs” – July 13 at 8:00pm et
The Armies of the Egyptian Pharaoh cut a bloody path through the ancient world, creating one the mightiest empires ever known. Using weapons ranging from the Battle Axe to the Khopesh, ancient Egypt ruled the ancient world.

107 “Stuff that Legends are Made Of” – July 20 at 8:00pm et
Explore the heroic swords behind the legends including the Arabian Zulfiqar given to Ali ibn Abi Talib by Muhammad and the Tuzin El Cid won from King Yucef.

108 “Weapons of the Rising Sun” July 27 at 8:00pm et
The Samurai, the mightiest warrior class the world has ever known, were famously known for their incredible use of the straight-headed spear the Yari and the Katana, one of the finest cutting weapons in world military history.

They changed the order of presentation. I'm in episodes 1, 4, 5, 7, & 8.

So its kind of like the forge show on A&E?

GeneChing
05-11-2017, 08:23 AM
A&E's Forged in Fire is a competition. MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR is not. The weapons aren't built in a timed race, but at the shop of Baltimore Knife & Sword. (http://imakeswords.com/) Also our show is more focused on the history behind the weapons, so we recount legends and set up tests that are more appropriate to the weapon itself.

Actually, one of BKS's representatives, Ilya Alekseyev, was a winner on FiF - S2E4 'Spiked Shield'.

I'll have more on this very soon, of course. But right now, I'm rather inundated with production for KFTC25 AF (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?69762-KUNG-FU-TAI-CHI-25TH-ANNIVERSARY-FESTIVAL-May-19-21-2017-San-Jose-CA).

Host Danny Trejo promises a "badass history lesson" in El Rey Network's Man at Arms: Art of War

"It takes three things to make a badass movie,” says Danny Trejo in this exclusive trailer for El Rey Network's new series Man at Arms: Art of War. “Bullets, blood and blades." Trejo should know, having starred in a number of films featuring plenty of all three elements, especially in his role as Machete in Robert Rodriguez' films.

Trejo is again working with his frequent film collaborator as host of this series on Rodriguez' El Rey Network. Each episode of Man at Arms, which is based on the popular YouTube series, features iconic weapons that have played prominent roles in pop culture, from video games to comics to TV shows.

A team of expert craftsmen reproduce these weapons from scratch, and afterward, Trejo and others clearly have fun testing them out, as you can see in the slicin'-and-dicin' clip below.

History’s Most Incredible Weapons Get Their Own Show (http://www.lifezette.com/popzette/historys-most-incredible-weapons-get-own-show/)
LifeZette previews the very first episode of El Rey's compelling new 'Man at Arms'
by Dave Taylor | Updated 01 Jun 2017 at 9:23 AM

Humankind has a habit of solving conflict through warfare. Well before recorded history, men were beating each other with sticks, poles, rocks, and whatever else was at hand — sometimes for good reason and sometimes not.

The evolution of weapons proved a critical element for the rise and longevity of empires; if your sticks were longer and heavier than the other guys, you had a marked advantage.

So it’s no wonder that actor Danny Trejo, of “Machete” and “Spy Kids” fame, has launched a new TV series launching on the El Rey Network called “Man At Arms: Art of War,” in which he explores the evolution of weapons and specific exotic weaponry from many cultures and eras. As the show explains in its opening, “Often the difference between victory and defeat hinged on the design of a single weapon.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK7Bc3BuFTQ

This is a reality show, however — so Trejo has assembled three teams, one to figure out how to build the weapon in question, one to talk about the history of the weapon and its cultural context, and a third to demonstrate its use. Blacksmiths, university historians, and Hollywood stunt people all work in the same industrial warehouse.

LifeZette got a look at the show's upcoming premiere episode, which focuses on the history and construction of two Chinese weapons, the venerable Ji and the exotic — and not particularly practical — Wind and Fire blade. The former is a double-ended pole arm that's sort of a hybrid between a spear, a dagger, and a battle ax, while the latter is what you'd get if you took a steel frisbee and added some super menacing blades to the outer edge.

It's the construction that's the most interesting, with a team of engineers, blacksmiths and forgers reverse-engineering the weapons and using a combination of classical and ultra-modern metalsmith techniques to recreate them. Plasma cutter? Right next to the traditional charcoal forge. Lots of slow-motion sparks fly as a red-hot piece of metal is hammered, or as water vaporizes instantly when poured onto a piece straight out of the fire.

The historical discussion from the academics is the least interesting bit of show and should probably be dropped or beefed up with some ivory-tower types who have more of a presence on camera. But the kung fu masters and stunt people? They look like they're having the most fun trying to figure out the practicalities of the weapons and how best to use them for an assault.

Unfortunately, we see too little of host Trejo. He's a great personality with a ton of charisma, just as tough and unique as he is in all his film roles; but here he also shows a wry sense of humor that helps the show have a story to tell through the chosen weapons.

Coming up in future episodes, the "Man at Arms" team will also be looking at the design, construction, history and use of more obscure weapons, including the Macuahuitl, the Zulfiqar, and the Kopesh. Never heard of them? That's OK; it'll still be compelling, educating and entertaining viewing.

"Man at Arms: Art of War" premieres on El Rey Network on June 8.

Last Action Hero (2000) is playing on El Rey Network now (http://www.elreynetwork.com/schedule) and it's hosted by MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR cast members Ilya and Matt. Check it out!

I think most of us did hosting segments while filming the show. Danny Trejo already had one I think, but he did a fresh one to help promote our new show. I did one for 36 Chamber (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?25619-The-36th-Chamber-of-Shaolin-(a-k-a-Master-Killer)). That was super fun so I do hope they run it.

Now I'm wondering if they will actually run it or if it went to the cutting room floor. My segment was shot last and we were all really exhausted, so I'm curious if it came out. They were trying to get me to connect it to the Ji, the weapon in the first episode, because someone mistook a Monk Spade for a Ji. I tried to make a tie using the crescent blade shape, but I'm not sure it came off. But that was just one small segment in a lot of filming, so we shall see.

Danny Trejo is a man that knows a thing or two about badass weapons, as we've seen for years in his movies. He was the perfect person to host the new show that debuts tomorrow night on El Rey, Man At Arms: Art of War!

Danny and Mike Jones discussed how the show came together, some of the best weapons that were crafted by the experts, incorporating those weapons into his future movies and how Danny is taking over the food world with his taco restaurants and new donut shop in Hollywood!

Make sure you watch the new show Man At Arms: Art of War, debuting tomorrow on the El Rey Network. Here's a preview of the show, it looks awesome!

And whenever you're in LA, make sure you go by Trejo's Coffee & Donuts and Trejo's Tacos!

When guys sway they've never heard of El Rey Network (http://www.elreynetwork.com), I often demand that they turn over their Man card right then. :p

TV Guy: El Rey network still strives for a male audience (http://www.recordonline.com/entertainmentlife/20170608/tv-guy-el-rey-network-still-strives-for-male-audience)

What do men want? The El Rey Network launches two new series with that question in mind. Hosted by Danny Trejo, “Man at Arms: Art of War” (8 p.m.) celebrates weaponry real and imagined with an accent on craftsmanship.

In each of eight episodes, Trejo will oversee the creation of iconic weapons that have “starred” in movies, television shows, video games and comics.

Each is appraised for how well it represents its mythical counterpart and judged for real-world functionality.

Australian cameraman and reporter Tim Noonan hosts “Rite of Passage” (9 p.m.), a 12-episode globe-spanning look at cultures from Venezuela to West Africa to Siberia, and the extreme ceremonial rituals in each society that define the transition to manhood.

All of them include pain, endurance and large doses of danger. Many involve dangerous creatures, from bucking broncos to crocodiles and venomous snakes.

Networks have long been in search of male viewers, and you can’t get more masculine than the subject of these two series. Will men watch?

The El Rey Network was launched by director Robert Rodriguez in 2013 as an English-language channel targeting Latino viewers.

Much of its programming has reflected the over-the-top pulp-exploitation flavor of Rodriguez’s films (“From Dusk Till Dawn”).

The network has also announced its mission and market as an audience of “strivers,” men who identify as working and middle class and who value hard work, independence, family and a notion of “living by a code.”

Few networks have so tightly identified themselves and their particular niche. Whether El Rey sticks with its strivers or reaches them should be interesting to see.

Networks are more often defined by hit shows that few could have seen coming. The Spike Network was also aimed at a male audience, but it reaches most viewers with its “Lip Sync Battle,” a reality showcase that’s not exactly dripping with testosterone.

Spike is hardly the only network to stray from its first mission. How did A&E go from Arts and Entertainment to “Duck Dynasty”? Or AMC evolve from old movies to “The Walking Dead”?

It’s not always easy to stick to living by a code.

Danny Trejo To Return As Host
1/14/2018 3:30 PM

Austin, TX – El Rey Network has greenlit the original unscripted series “Man at Arms: Art of War” for a second season with the incomparable Danny Trejo returning as host. The renewal was announced today by El Rey Network President and GM Daniel Tibbets. The second season will continue the collaboration between El Rey Network and DEFY Media, the digital media company that created the digital series “Man at Arms”. The series moves to ten episodes and will debut in the second half of 2018.

“’Man at Arms: Art of War’ has been a terrific addition to El Rey Network’s original programming slate. Our audience really responded to this exploration and celebration of craftsmanship, history and strength,” said Tibbets. “Season 1 expanded the universe of the digital series and season 2 will truly test the limits of the team of expert craftsmen.”

In each episode of “Man at Arms”, a team of expert craftsmen skillfully reproduce iconic weapons and armor from scratch, using the technology that would have been available at the time such weapons and armor were originally created, as well as state-of-the-art technologies beyond the original forgers’ wildest imaginations. The builders create historical, modern, and mythological works of martial art. Each masterwork is then tested by experts for its strength and real-world functionality. Whether it slices, shoots, smashes, stabs, blocks, parries, or disarms, viewers will get a first-hand look at what kind of force each marvelous masterpiece can unleash.

The showrunner already contacted me about this but I was under an NDA.

They've dubbed us into Spanish. It is strangely gratifying to be dubbed into another language after watching so many dubbed films over the years. Ironically, Danny, Marko and Crystal were dubbed as well, and they all speak Spanish.

Defy Media CEO Says 8% Layoff Is Related to Exit of ‘Tactical’ Businesses (http://variety.com/2018/digital/news/defy-media-ceo-layoffs-shutdown-tactical-businesses-1202721077/)

Defy Media is in the process of shuttering a few lines of business that are resulting in the layoff of about 20 staffers, or 8% of its workforce — the latest digital-media company to pare back headcount to cut costs.

In an interview, CEO Matt Diamond said the company is exiting “tactical businesses” that were not core to Defy’s business. Those included a network programmatic ad business, which has sold ads into third-party networks with inventory, and a licensing and video syndication business to distribute partner content to long-tail internet sites.

“The changes we made in personnel were to solidly focus the company on owned-and-operated brands,” Diamond said. He said the layoffs will be completed by mid-March, and added that the former employees in Defy’s programmatic ad sales business will be able to continue operating independently.

Following the cutbacks, Defy Media will have about 225 employees. The layoffs, which were announced internally last month, were previously reported by Videoink.

Meanwhile, Diamond denied rumors that Defy Media has been shopping for a buyer, saying that the company is not out “actively selling ourselves” at this point. “Rumors about us selling have been out there forever,” he said.

Defy Media CEO Pledges Company Reforms After Screen Junkies' Andy Signore Firing for Sexual Misconduct
The core of Defy’s business continues to be its original content brands — led by Smosh, Clevver and Screen Junkies — that cater to a 15-to-29-year-old demographic. The company overall produces more than 70 shows, with more than 1 million viewers watching on average each week, according to Diamond.

“The changes we made were to accelerate profitability,” Diamond said. “For us, we feel strongly that being profitable and building around your brands is critical in this market.”

Defy Media joins the rash of belt-tightening in the digital media space. In recent months, BuzzFeed, Vox Media, Refinery29, Mashable and Funny Or Die have each made rounds of staff cutbacks.

Defy is making the job cuts to streamline the biz, according to Diamond, not because it was running low on funds. Most recently, Defy Media raised $70 million in September 2016 led by Wellington Management; previous investors in the company include Viacom and Lionsgate.

Diamond said Defy Media went out looking to raise capital last year but ultimately “we pulled back” at the beginning of 2018. “We had offers, but we were underwhelmed,” he said.

Besides its core digital business on YouTube, Facebook and other platforms, Defy Media will continue to look at longer-form TV projects in an “opportunistic” manner, Diamond said.

On that front, Defy Media recently entered into a pact with GRB Entertainment, under which the companies plan to develop and distribute an original programming slate for domestic and international distribution built on Defy’s content franchises including Smosh, AWEme, Clevver and Screen Junkies. GRB most recently acquired international distribution rights to Defy’s series “Man at Arms” and “Super Fan Builds.”

In addition, El Rey Network announced the renewal of unscripted series “Man at Arms: Art of War,” hosted by Danny Trejo, for second season. The 10-episode series will debut on the cable channel in the second half of 2018. In each episode, a team of expert craftsmen reproduce iconic weapons and armor from scratch, using technology that would have been available at the time they were originally created.

Separately, last year Defy Media said it instituted new HR measures following the firing of Screen Junkies founder Andy Signore for inappropriate sexual behavior. Under the company’s new policies, sexual-harassment training is mandatory for all employees. Somewhat disconcerting. Frankly, working with DEFY has been an education for me on the power of digital media. I had no idea about the magnitude of influence and the staggering numbers behind it all.

Man at Arms tests historical weapons created by experts

Broadcasters in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe have acquired Man at Arms, the unscripted series hosted by Sons of Anarchy’s Danny Trejo.

A&E Ole Network in Latin America, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific in India and Viasat in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe will air the show, which was commissioned by El Rey, the US channel founded by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez.

Produced by Defy Media, it sees an expert roundtable of builders, historians and martial artists test weapons created by experts to see how much destruction they can cause. The series is distributed internationally by US-based GRB Entertainment.

I'm filming Season 2 now. We've really upped our game. More to come.

El Rey Network is under Univision Communications. I heard it was dropped from Sling, and the Dish drop likely affects El Rey too. Nasty timing because it's the finals for the World Cup, and Univision had the best coverage in the U.S. Hope this gets resolved before the 2nd season of Man at Arms: Art of War premieres (scheduled for later this summer).

A standoff between Dish and Univision may last indefinitely, leaving US Spanish-language viewers in the dark.

Over the weekend, Univision networks and stations disappeared from Dish. Both companies blame each other for the outage.

On Monday, New York-based Univision said in a release that Dish dropped most of Univision's networks and stations from its streaming service indefinitely on Saturday. The removal of its channels followed Colorado-based Dish's rejection of a Univision offer to an extend an existing contract, the network said.

Earlier, Dish disputed that account, saying Univision was trying to gain leverage in a contract dispute by withholding its programming.

Univision is attempting to increase the rate it charges Dish by roughly 75 percent, Dish said on Saturday. The Spanish-language network blocked Dish users' access to its flagship Univision network, as well as its Galavision and UniMás channels, Dish said. Univision also blocked Dish's Sling users from accessing all Univision channels, it said.

"Univision's attempted price hikes target Hispanics despite the fact that fewer members of our community are watching Univision," Alfredo Rodríguez Diaz-Marta, vice president of DishLATINO and Sling Latino, said in a release. "We call on Univision to return its signal to Dish, DishLATINO and Sling TV customers as soon as possible."

Univision said additional affected stations include Univision Deportes Network, El Rey Network, TLNovelas and Foro TV.

"Despite the success of our programming with its customers, Dish insists on paying Univision only a fraction of what it pays our English-language peers, including some with far fewer viewers," Jessica Herrera-Flanigan, vice president of corporate affairs at Univision, said in the release.

"We stand by ready to find a path forward when Dish is ready to truly negotiate," said Bobby Amirshahi, senior vice president of corporate communications at Univision, in an email statement.

GLOW had some stiff competition including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Cobra Kai, Saturday Night Live, and Shameless, but the comedy ended up body slamming all of them. This was Duggins’ second nomination and first win. Her first nomination was for Alias in 2006. She joins Dorenda Moore, who won a Daytime Emmy for stunt coordination in 2010.

Upon accepting the award, Duggins admitted she was nervous, but thanked her GLOW family.

Backstage, Duggins was a bit more relaxed and said that she was “honored to be the first woman” to receive the award for Outstanding Stunt Coordination.

She gives recognition to her fellow peers and sees them as mentors and friends. She recognizes that even though she is “the first” in this category, she points out that “This show, in general, breaks the mold for women.”

GLOW also won a Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Production Design For a Narrative Program (Half-Hour or Less) and was nominated for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. It has also received Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

I know Dorenda Moore. She was the Stunt Coordinator for Man at Arms: Art of War (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?70140-Man-at-Arms-Art-of-War-New-Original-Series-from-EL-REY-Network) Season 1.

This scared the crap out of me when I saw it this weekend, but I quickly realized it was fake when it was only coming from one sketchy source. What is up with Death Hoaxes anyway? Every time I hear one for Jackie (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?69357-Jackie-Chan-Death-Hoaxes), I get ****ed off.

Danny Trejo Death Hoax (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/danny-trejo-passing/)
The popular Los Angeles-born actor did not suddenly pass away at age 74 in September 2018.

ORIGIN
On 9 September 2018, the web site Your Daily News published an article headlined “Danny Trejo The Famous Native American Actor Dies at age 74”:

Curiously, however, the article text provided no details about the time or manner of Trejo’s alleged passing, nor even mentioned Trejo’s death — it simply provided a summary of the actor’s life and career:

Danny Trejo was born Dan Trejo in Echo Park, Los Angeles, to Alice (Rivera) and Dan Trejo, a construction worker… with his intimidating, tattooed, muscle-bound appearance, character actor Danny Trejo has formed a successful career as the all-purpose hard case over his curious and enduring cinematic career. Beating the odds of repeat offender syndrome after being released from prison, Trejo has risen through the ranks to find himself in high demand as an actor, and has even expanded his talents to include a producer credit to his resumé.

That lack of information is not surprising, because the article was a hoax — Danny Trejo is not dead and is still actively posting on social media:

The only source reporting Trejo’s death in September 2018 was Your Daily News, a site which had only been active a very short time and as of this writing was no longer reachable.

Moreover, Trejo himself has previously been the subject of celebrity death hoax rumors (which he has personally disclaimed):

Fans looking forward to the screen return of Chilean action star, actor Marko Zaror (Kiltro, Redeemer) can rest their hopes now in the current Thailand production, Invincible. Daniel Zirilli (The Asian Connection) is producing and directing the film for what looks to be the first in a shared multi-pic slate with producer Doug Price via his D3 Telefilm banner and Zirilli’s Popart Film Factory.

Variety broke the story this week announcing actor Johnny Strong (The Fast And The Furious, Sinners and Saints) to lead the cast in the role of Cam Devore, the head of security for a billionaire-backed black site being used to test an inventor’s latest strides in nano-technology. Zaror will star as Brock Cortez, one of the military applicants used for the experiment who Devore is tasked with tracking down when Cortez escapes.

Invincible will further reunite Zaror with Savage Dog co-star, actor Vladmir Kulich who joins in as Colonel John Taylor who enlists the billionaire inventor, Leor Teska, to apply his studies with developer Dr. Quade. ’71 actor Paul Kennedy will play Teska with actress Sally Kirkland in the role of Quade.

Strong was last reported earlier on for a franchise reboot of William Kaufman’s 2010 action thriller, Sinners And Saints, alongside martial arts action star Scott Adkins. That project is currently still in development.

Price and Zirilli last collaborated on Grindstone/Lionsgate’s 2010 crime thriller, Locked Down, which starred Tony Schiena opposite Vinnie Jones. The two now have up to four more screenplays to apply their craft in action/adventure titles with Zirilli in a first look deal as director.

Kaos Entertainment is overseeing production services for the film.

'Master of Arms' will build weapons straight out of the history books (https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/master-of-arms-will-build-weapons-straight-out-of-the-history-books)

Some may say that a weapon is only as good as the person wielding it. However, Discovery’s latest series, “Master of Arms,” seeks to prove that the weapon is only as good as its craftsmanship.

The new series, will take some of the world’s most skilled builders of modern weaponry and put their skills to the test by asking them to build period-specific weapons that will stand up to rigorous testing and judgment from a panel of experts.

“Each episode, three builders will face-off in two historical challenges that call upon era-specific weaponry, from the firearms of the frontier to the blades of the Vikings,” Discovery wrote in a press release for the show. “But these aren’t just quickly fabricated weapons – each tool will be heavily researched and crafted pieces of art.”

Zeke, Trent and Ashley address contestants. (Discovery Channel)

After each round, one of the three builders will be eliminated. The last craftsman standing will be crowned the master of arms and earn the $10,000 grand prize.

The weapons will be judged on their design, historical accuracy and ability to do some damage and emulate the predecessors that helped shape the outcome of warfare and, therefore, history.

Each design will be tested by Nicholas Irving, a decorated military veteran and expert marksman. After that, they’ll be judged by a panel of three experts including leading firearms historian and Chief Curator of the largest firearms collection in the country, Ashley Hlebinsky, firearms specialist Zeke Stout and professional blacksmith Trenton Tye.

The new series premieres Nov. 2.

Stuntman Helps Save Horses Amid SoCal Wildfires (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/stuntman-helps-save-malibu-horses-wildfires-1160257)

A horse shot by Getty Images photographer Matthew Simmons on Cornell Road near Paramount Ranch on Nov. 9, 2018.

Horse owners across the area were shocked at how quickly the fire moved, and several had to flee abruptly, with some forced to leave their animals behind.

Amid the chaos and destruction wrought by the Woolsey Fire since Thursday, a tightly knit community of horse owners and breeders rallied over the weekend to save the area’s animals, despite the enormous challenges the inferno presented.

“This fire was really tough,” said stuntman Ardeshir Radpour who, armed with a massive trailer that can accommodate six horses, volunteers his time whenever fire strikes Southern California. In the last big fire, he and a friend managed to extract about 300 horses. But Woolsey, racing westward down canyons brittled by drought, made the logistical challenges frighteningly difficult.

“You’d get a message from someone who needed horses rescued and then you’d hear nothing for hours. Either they were out of range, or the towers were down, or who knows,” explained Radpour, who is a member of the area’s polo-playing community, “This one was a really helpless situation.” Radpour did manage to extract about a dozen horses in two separate trips. But when much of the Pacific Coast Highway closed down on Friday, it restricted his movement even further.

“People were calling and there was just no way for me to get there,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. By Sunday afternoon, Woolsey had scorched over 83,000 acres and was only 10 percent contained, forcing the mandatory evacuation of some 200,000 residents.

Horses on Cornell Road near Paramount Ranch on Nov. 9, 2018.

Horse owners across Malibu were shocked at how quickly the fire moved, and several had to flee abruptly, with some forced to leave their animals to their own devices.

“The thing we felt the worst about is that the fire came so fast we didn’t have time to rescue the horses,” says Wendell Phillips, co-owner of Spunky’s Rescue Ranch in Malibu, which takes in strays and cares for them. “For some reason they survived, but now we need to get up there and get them.”

Phillips, a retired policeman, said several horses from his area remain missing but that Los Angeles County officials have been preventing other agencies, such as the mounted unit from Palm Springs, from intervening to help. Local officials didn’t respond to a request for comment.

“I keep running into red tape,” says Phillips. “Now we’ve got this ridiculous turf war. What kind of B.S. is that? Let’s just get it done.”

Phillips and his wife, Mary Rickards, realized they lost their own home when they saw a picture of the burnt remains. The surrounding area didn’t fare any better.

“There are 29 homes on one stretch of Mulholland that are all totally destroyed except one,” said Phillips. “There’s nothing left standing. It looks like Dresden.”

Phillips and Rickard were on their way back to Malibu on Sunday evening, but road closures were hindering their progress. They hoped to reach Spunky's Ranch to help other locals who had decided not to evacuate — and also to continue looking for the remaining missing horses, at least half a dozen by Rickard’s count.

“There’s no water there, no power, no food,” says Phillips. “I’ve got 300-gallon barrels of water and some emergency rations."

Phillips’ neighbor, actress Victoria Principal, was spared her home, though she did evacuate. Alyssa Milano owns six horses that were also safely evacuated as the fire spread. Four horses (and one donkey) owned by Wendie Malick were saved by a local sheriff's deputy.

Horses weren’t the only animals at risk. An employee at Pet Haven in Malibu says the local staff had been evacuated and the animals taken to shelters elsewhere. “The pets are all coming to different locations,” the employee, who declined to identify herself, says.

In Topanga Canyon, which remains under mandatory evacuation, residents said Woolsey wasn’t presenting an immediate threat. Still, horse owners got their animals out just to be safe.

“We evacuated 35 horses, but there’s no smoke in sight right now,” says Susu Dillon, who manages the Fair Hills ranch in Topanga. “Everything is blowing away from us, but people are leaving for their own peace of mind. The horses went to various places and they’re all safe.”

Calls to several other ranches went unanswered or were sent straight to voicemail. The Malibu Rider’s Ranch, which, until Woolsey struck, offered up a popular one-hour, three-mile loop that wound its way through the old Western Town at Paramount Ranch (which has also since burned down), had evacuated.

Even as the fire continued to rage, the area’s animal lovers took solace in tales of heroism. “One girl had to take pigs, cats and horses,” says Dillon. “She got them all in a trailer and truck and all were happy."

Univision Deportes and El Rey Network are now also off the air on DISH.UNIVISION, DISH

The he said-she said battle in the carriage dispute between Univision and DISH continues to heat up with another four more of the Hispanic media company's networks going dark on the satellite provider.

Univision Deportes, El Rey Network, FOROtv and TLNovelas join the blackout, which has now entered its fifth month. The four networks went dark on DISH on Monday, November 12 at 10 p.m. ET.

The carriage deal with Univision, Unimás and Galavisión expired June 30. Univision Deportes and El Rey are newer networks, so carriage was negotiated on a separate contract. Only Fusion remains on the satellite provider, which was secured on another agreement.

Univision blames DISH and DISH blames Univision for pulling the networks and not being able to strike a deal on retransmission fees.

In August, DISH warned the blackout could be permanent. The company reported its worst net subscriber losses to date during the third quarter of 2018, losing 367,000 customers. There's no way to know how much of those losses are due to subscribers who are upset over the loss of the Univision networks.

In a statement, Univision insists it has "made every reasonable effort and beyond to reach an agreement, but Dish refused to make a deal that was in the interests of our audience, its customers and, ultimately, of Dish itself. Given that Dish experienced its worst-ever quarterly subscriber losses after dropping the bulk of Univision’s networks and stations, its unwillingness to recognize the power of Hispanic consumers and the popularity of Univision’s leading news, sports and entertainment programming is bizarre and disappointing."

But DISH has a different take.

"DISH actually offered Univision a contract extension so that talks could continue without the channels being removed. Univision refused and took the channels down," a said a DISH spokesperson.

“The Univision story remains the same: its content, on the whole, continues to decline in viewership, and as a result, the economics of their proposals do not make sense. Meanwhile, Univision continues to sell its direct-to-consumer product, Univision NOW, at a lower price than Univision proposes charging DISH customers. We don’t think that’s right," DISH said in a statement.

Univision Now costs $7.99 a month. According to DISH, Univision is demanding a higher retransmission fee.

In the meantime, DISH contends it's providing replacement content for its customers on DishLATINO, including Telemundo, ESPN Deportes, Fox Deportes, Azteca and Pasiones. It's also offering customers and over the air antenna and a $5 discount on their bill. According to a spokesperson, DISH has handed out about 100,000 antennas to customers affected by the Univision blackout.

Since the dispute, Univision has done some lobbying of its own, calling on viewers to drop DISH and switch to other providers.

* Story updated to include number of antennas DISH has sent to customers who requested them.

Exclusive: Danny Trejo talks El Rey Network’s Man At Arms, returning as Romeo to Mayans M.C. (https://www.monstersandcritics.com/smallscreen/exclusive-danny-trejo-talks-el-rey-networks-man-at-arms-returning-as-romeo-to-mayans-mc/)

Danny Trejo brings the steel and the swagger to El Rey, home of Man At Arms: Art of War. Pic credit: El Rey

Danny Trejo needs no introduction, He’s the hardest working man in showbiz and he never stops.

Trejo is tight with El Rey founder and chieftain Robert Rodriguez, a visionary man who Trejo praised in a past Indiewire interview, saying: “Robert Rodriguez has done more for independent filmmaking and the Latino community than anyone in the last 50 years.”

Trejo is an iconic badass in the movies, on television and in the culinary world. From Machete to Mexi Falafel, Danny’s restaurants are growing in the LA area like crazy and the demand for his food is so strong, usually, there is a standing line waiting to get in at every spot.

Tonight, Danny Trejo takes on the Assasin’s Brotherhood on the latest Man at Arms: Art of War on El Rey Network.

Trejo and the blacksmiths examine a popular video game that has sold over 100 million copies as they recreate two of the most lethal blades around, the Scimitar, a curved-blade sword from the middle east great for beheading, and the Hidden Assassin’s Blade, one of the signature weapons for the Assassin’s Brotherhood that boasts a sneaky retractable blade.

Kung Fu specialist and writer Gene Ching and chief instructor of Guild of the Silent Sword Da’Mon Stith reportedly will test the metal and deliver the weaponry action to see how they perform.

El Rey Network is was created by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez who brings the distinctly LatinX flavor to TV with action-packed wrestling hybrid Lucha Underground, grindhouse movie marathons, kung fu marathons and series like From Dusk Till Dawn and more. Man at Arms is now in its second successful season.

We spoke to Danny Trejo yesterday:

Monsters and Critics: I’m a weapons nerd but I’m hopeless. I will cut myself with a paring knife. How do you not get something worse than a paper cut on set? When I watch that show, I worry about you.

Danny Trejo: You know what? It’s so much fun. I’m telling you, people don’t realize, it’s really dangerous because some of those weapons are so sharp that you can split hairs with them.

Especially the Samurai swords. Those things are amazing, and what I like about them, they’re not just making weapons. We talk about the history, we talk about the game-changing part that they had in war. So there is a whole lot of stuff that goes on.

M&C: What have you learned with this show as far as ancient cultures that you had no idea maybe as a kid growing up or from history lessons in school?

Danny Trejo: That’s an amazing question by the way, and really it’s like, you know… history in school, I loved it but I never knew. It’s like the Mongols. The Mongol Hoards, the reason that they were so amazing in war is that they had developed a bow that it was reverse curved and it was so much more powerful than your longbows.

Your longbow, you had to stand still and shoot. The short, reversed curved bow had more power, and could pierce armor, they could shoot from a horse. So they had moving weapons really.

M&C: Of all the guys that you worked with like Gene Ching is on the show and I love him and Kerry Stagmer. How do you get along with the Baltimore Knife and Sword people and can you talk a little bit about your castmates there?

Danny: You know what? First of all, they all get along with me. I’m joking but there is a certain vibe. Robert [Rodriguez] has a great, great talent for putting people together that just jive right. And we’re like a family on this show.

The people that come in, I always make it a point, I did The Flash, the movie The Flash and that’s the best way to describe it because usually when you have a sitcom and a new person comes in, they feel a little left out. And so we make it a point to anybody that comes on the show, just take them in as family, and it works out really, really well.

That’s what they do on The Flash. They make you feel like family.

M&C: How does the production keep all of you guys safe on Man of Arms? There is a lot of dangerous stuff laying around.

Danny: Most of the people that work with the weapons, they’re all professional, so they know. Growing up they probably been cut and beat, so they all know. They won’t let me play with the weapons. When somebody new is on the set, everybody kind of like watches out where all the weapons are and make sure if somebody wants to pick one up, we’ll show them how to do it.

M&C: Now does cast and crew have your back? Do they demand that Trejo’s Tacos and Donuts are in craft services and the crew catering?

Danny: [Laughing] Always. Always. And they’re always saying, “Okay, when is donut time?”

M&C: Speaking of… your Trejo’s restaurants are doing so well in California. Now I’m out of California, are you going bring it anywhere else out of the state of California, do you have any plans for that?

Danny: Well, we’re thinking about it, but the only thing we’re concerned about really is quality control. We’re trying to keep a certain quality of food and when you get too far away, you can’t keep the quality control. So I eat at every restaurant. [Laughing] I get to eat it for free, so I go to every restaurant and then I send my friends to go eat to make sure that everything is up and up. All my friends say, “Do you want me to wear a wire?”

I say, “No, don’t wear a wire. Just go and eat and let me know how it is.” [laughing] So I always get good reports from staff and everybody that goes and eats there.

Celebrities now, there are a lot of celebrities going to the restaurant. The ones in Woodland Hills and the one in Hollywood. So that’s good. And we just opened up a new one at terminal one, Southwest at LAX.

M&C: That’s fantastic, so everyone coming through the city, even if they’re just in a layover, they can experience your restaurant.

Danny: Right on. [laughing]

M&C: Hey, I saw a great little short snippet for a film you want to make, Senior Citizens, will that be made?

Danny: Yes, that is gonna be directed by a guy named Craig Moss. He’s the one that directed me in Bad Ass, all three movies and it is funny. The script reads like a joke book. So you’ll be seeing elderly people knock out people with bedpans and walkers and …[laughing]

I also finished a movie called Granddaddy Daycare starring Reno Williams and that’s a funny movie.

M&C: Hey true or false, ABC, Food and Familia, is that pilot going be made?

Danny: Food and Familia!! That’s it, we’re going with that one, that one is funny. That’s a dramedy and we’re looking for the co-star right now, the female lead. So it’s going to be funny. The writer is Peter Murrieta? I always call him Joaquin. Joaquin Murrieta.

M&C: I got a Mayan’s MC question, I know that in Trejo’s Tacos you paid homage with a taco named for them. Will we see Romeo Parada, your character from Sons of Anarchy?

Danny: Absolutely, hey. Yeah. Absolutely because they gotta have to get that crooked DA Agent, DEA Agent. Romeo.

M&C: So he’s coming back to Mayan’s MC?

Danny: Yeah. Yes, absolutely.

Man at Arms: Art of War airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on El Rey Network.

So sweet to get some love from interviewer April Neale.

finally got to see the first episode on VRV on the Roku. I like how you're the voice of reason. In all of their enthusiasm to create the wind and fire wheels, you were the only person to bring up that there wasn't really any archaeological evidence for their existence on the battle field. The level of difficulty in producing and using them is probably proof enough that they were most likely an opera prop. It looked like the guy cut himself pretty good in the cutting demo. Anyway, I like the show and plan on watching the series.

Marko's cut wasn't too bad really. It was a small puncture, not too deep. Da'Mon's injury, as mentioned in the article above (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=1451), was worse. But both men are warriors and they were back on set, back in action, the next day.

One of the most fun things about genre films and television is the weaponry. Who hasn't marveled at Beatrix Kiddo's Hanzo sword from KILL BILL or Oberyn Martell's viper spear from GAME OF THRONES? If you are into that sort of thing, I'm sure you've looked into purchasing a replica of your favorite only to find that most are just really shoddy showpieces meant for display on a mantle.

What if though you had a true weapons master actually create a famous weapon from myth or pop culture, like Conan the Barbarian's broadsword for example? Would it be a functional tool of destruction or would it be an impractical mess?

https://media.aintitcool.com/media/uploads/2018/wheels/manatarms2.jpg

The El Rey Network series MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR seeks to answer that very question on a weekly basis and it has returned after a successful first season. I was given the opportunity recently to check out the first few episodes in advance of its season 2 premiere.

What I discovered with the show is that, while the concept is inherently fun and host Danny Trejo (MACHETE) certainly adds to that vibe with his infectious laugh and friendly demeanor, the topic itself is handled seriously. Each week Trejo meets with a panel of experts that includes blacksmiths, weapons and martial arts experts, and stunt performers. A couple of notable inclusions in the rotating line up were DTV action star Marko Zaror (UNDISPUTED 3) and Robert Rodriguez's own son, Rebel, who is adept at forging metal weapons.

They then discuss the cultural significance of the style of weapons they will be covering in that particular episode. They talk about where the weapons appeared and what they mean to them personally, fandom, and sometimes even their historical significance. These introductory chats always include clips from television shows and films where the weapons are featured. In the handful of episodes I watched, clips from YOJIMBO, EXCALIBUR, and even NARUTO were shown. The panel is then given two weapons from the show's topic that week to create as not only a screen/story accurate item but also as a completely functional tool. No easy task.

https://media.aintitcool.com/media/uploads/2018/wheels/manatarms4.jpg

The majority of the show then covers the handcrafted creation of these weapons. If you're into weaponry or even simply repair and "do-it-yourself" shows you will find this aspect fascinating to watch. The blacksmiths and weapons experts craft beautiful screen-accurate items with a minimal amount of modern fabrication and they walk you through the entire process of creation with simple easy to follow language.

Once the weapon is forged, it is presented to Trejo and he acts as the audience surrogate and gets even more information about the final product before passing it over to one of the highly skilled martial artists to test.

The testing is done by using the weapon to destroy various objects like bamboo poles, shields, slabs of meat, and most graphically gel-based dummies filled with fake blood and organs. This aspect of the show is comparable to a program that used to run on Spike TV called DEADLIEST WARRIOR. The main difference here though is that MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR avoids the silly recreations and faux rivalries of that show and instead lets the beautiful craftsmanship and power of these weapons take center stage.

The show is an easy, enjoyable watch that will subtlety teach you bits about crafting and history as it goes along. Sometimes, the forging scenes can be a little too lengthy but the thrill of watching a skilled warrior decimate scenery with a beautiful weapon that may not have ever really existed before cannot be denied.

To sum it up, if you like Renaissance faires, shows about crafting, or just watching a little good-natured destruction then MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR just might be what you are looking for.

MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR Season 2 premieres Thursday, October 4th at 8 pm EST on the El Rey Network.

Machete Star Danny Trejo Joins the Area 51 Raid (https://comicbook.com/movies/2019/07/15/area-51-raid-facebook-event-aliens-danny-trejo/)
By JENNA ANDERSON - July 15, 2019 04:57 pm EDT

The Internet is attempting to organize an event unlike any other, with over a million people volunteering on Facebook to storm the Air Force's secretive Area 51 base. Quite a lot of memes have spun out of this ordeal, including one from beloved actor Danny Trejo. On Monday, Trejo took to Twitter to share a screenshot of himself from Machete Kills in Space, with the caption that this would be him after leaving Area 51.

Trejo, whose filmography also includes everything from From Dusk Til Dawn to The Flash, has become a sort of cult icon

For the uninitiated, Area 51 is a section of the Edwards Air Force Base in the Nevada desert. For decades, it's never been abundantly clear exactly what the base does, outside of evidence that it has been used to create experimental aircraft and weapons systems. Some have believed that the base is secretly hiding proof of extraterrestrial life, either through studying a crashed UFO or attempting to contact a new one.

The Area 51 movement has spun out of a viral Facebook event, which is appropriately named "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us". The page suggests that a giant group of people attempt to visit and "Naruto run" their way into the secretive military base and find out what extraterrestrial information they have.

"We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry." the event's description reads. "If we [Naruto] run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens."

While the event is clearly a joke, the sheer number of people responding to it has since garnered an official response from the Air Force, who are apparently "ready to protect" the base should the event actually come to fruition.

“[Area 51] is an open training range for the US Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces,” Air Force spokesperson Laura McAndrews said in a statement (via Yahoo). “The US Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets”.

The "Storm Area 51" event is theoretically scheduled for September 20th, and there's no telling if anyone will actually turn their digital RSVP into action. If they do, maybe Trejo will be a source of inspiration for them.

When people ask me about Season 3, I tell them that we're on hiatus, probably because Danny is busy...saving babies trapped in cars and stuff.

(CNN)One of Hollywood's best-known villains, Danny Trejo, came to the rescue of a baby that was trapped in an overturned vehicle in Los Angeles.
It wasn't a stunt for an upcoming movie. It happened in real life on Wednesday.
The actor jumped into action after witnessing two vehicles crash causing one to rollover. The overturned vehicle that was sitting on its roof still had a baby strapped into a car seat inside.

Trejo said he tried crawling in through a broken window but couldn't get the seat belt unhooked. With the help of another bystander, Monica Jackson, they were able to free the child.
"The only thing that saved the little kid was his car seat," Trejo told a photographer on the scene.
The Los Angeles Fire Department told CNN affiliate KABC that three people were taken to a hospital. Their injuries were not life threatening.
"Everything good that has happened to me has happened as a direct result of helping someone else," Trejo told CNN affiliate KABC. "Everything."

Danny Trejo Joins Sci-Fi Series 'Paragon' (Exclusive) (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/danny-trejo-joins-sci-fi-series-paragon-1230166)

The 'Machete' star will battle for a slice of the afterlife following the destruction of Heaven.
Machete is heading to the afterlife.

Danny Trejo — who this week generated headlines when he helped rescue a baby from an overturned vehicle in L.A. — has joined the cast of Pikchure Zero Entertainment’s new sci-fi action series Paragon, currently in production for a 2020 launch, and features in this exclusive first look from the show.

The series, soon out to networks, will encompass a seven-episode first season, with each 43-minute episode fixing on the human race as it deals with the obliteration of Heaven.

With only a small piece of the afterlife to live for, everyone, including Death himself, is fighting to claim the Elysian for themselves.

“We have always loved the sci-fi fantasy genre, and we wanted to create a series that explored one of the most intriguing questions of humanity," said Justin Price who, in addition to directing the episodes, produces alongside filmmaking partner Khu. "Where do we go when we die? And what would happen if Heaven no longer existed?”

Added Price: "Paragon is an edgier and grittier cable style series in the vein of Firefly and Altered Carbon. I believe we have an electric hybrid that explores the human spectrum of dealing with loss and love in a stylistic way. Danny Trejo is outstanding as Kincaid, the half-dead leader of disbanded reapers."

In addition to Trejo, Paragon — based on an idea by Price and Khu — stars Franziska Schissler, and Dilan Gwyn.

The Mill Valley Film Festival is proud to announce a Special Presentation of the US & International Premiere of INMATE #1: THE RISE OF DANNY TREJO, featuring an onstage conversation with star DANNY TREJO.

About INMATE#1: THE RISE OF DANNY TREJO:
With nearly 400—and counting!—film and television credits since 1985, Danny Trejo is one of the most prolific and recognizable actors around. But his remarkable ascent to beloved Hollywood hero notorious for tough guy roles in Heat, Breaking Bad, and the Machete series was as hard-earned as it was unexpected. In this moving, funny, and revealing portrait, Trejo candidly traces his own sensational out-of-the-ashes journey from troubled kid growing up in Pacoima, CA, to teenage drug addict and San Quentin prison inmate, to ubiquitous film star, restauranteur, philanthropist, and role model. With help from his most ardent champions, including his children, friends, and famous colleagues (Robert Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, and Michelle Rodriguez), Brett Harvey’s affecting profile is as raw and intimate as it is a buoyant celebration of an exceptional life, telling a story of unlikely survival, rare humility, and a profound transformation that led to a real-life Hollywood ending.

About Danny Trejo:
Danny Trejo has had a prolific career in the entertainment industry, yet his road to success has been hard earned and anything but typical, from imprisonment to helping young people battle drug addiction, to acting and producing. Trejo has starred in dozens of films including Desperado, Heat, the From Dusk Till Dawn franchise, Con Air, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, the Spy Kids movies, Grindhouse, Machete, Machete Kills, Dead In Tombstone, and Muppets Most Wanted. Danny’s recent television work includes recurring roles on Sons of Anarchy and King of the Hill, and he has appeared on episodes of Modern Family and Breaking Bad, among others. Most recently, Trejo reunited with Robert Rodriguez for season two of El Rey’s TV series From Dusk Till Dawn. Trejo also regularly lends his voice to animated projects, including the WB feature Storks, Guillermo del Toro’s The Book of Life, regular roles on Netflix’s The Adventures of Puss in Boots and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and will most recently be heard in the upcoming Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

El Rey Network: Robert Rodriguez Channel to End on Thursday (https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/el-rey-network-robert-rodriguez-channel-to-end-on-thursday/)
by Regina Avalos, December 30, 2020

https://tvseriesfinale.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/el-rey-network-e1609293606477.jpg

El Rey Network is going dark. The channel, started by Robert Rodriguez in December 2013, is going off the air tomorrow. At its high point in March 2015, the network aired in 40 million households. Last November, that number was down to 33 million.

When Univision backed out of a partnership with the network in November of this year, that number dropped even more drastically. Earlier this month, only 13 million households still received El Rey Network, per Programming Insider.

The network aired “action genre films, beginning with From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, and reality, animation, and lifestyle programming.” Rodriguez announced that the network would come to an end earlier this month.

I'm so saddened to hear this. Working for El Rey was one of the best jobs I've ever had.

I WILL ALWAYS RIDE WITH EL REY.

Robert Rodriguez, Founder and Chairman of El Rey Network. MATT SAYLES/INVISION FOR EL REY NETWORK/AP IMAGES
El Rey is coming back to life. Director Robert Rodriguez's struggling cable network, launched in 2013, came to an abrupt end December 31, 2020. When the niche cable net went off the air, fans hoped it would be revived, even suggesting he should launch an El Rey streaming channel. Well, that's apparently in the works.

El Rey Network, founded and owned by Rodriguez, John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa, and FactoryMade Ventures signed a partnership deal with streaming company Cinedigm. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The alliance will help El Rey transition from a linear to free ad-supported streaming channel. Cinedigm will have exclusive rights to El Rey’s content catalog and will exclusively distribute Rodriguez's feature film Red 11 and the companion docuseries Rebel Without A Crew: The Robert Rodriguez Film School.

Plans are for an El Rey over-the-top streaming service to be made available to all OTT distribution platforms, connected TVs, digital set-top boxes, media-streaming devices, as well as the web later this year. No date has been announced yet.

“El Rey has always been a network for the people - a mainstream outlet where we discover diverse, independent voices. The fact that we can also now make our catalogue of kick-ass programming available for free to all gives me enormous joy,” said Rodriguez. "As audiences move deliberately to streaming, it was important for me to democratize our platform so that the masses have the opportunity to see themselves in our lineup of curated, inclusive and entertaining content. This is a huge win in every way, and I want to thank Cinedigm for putting fans first with this new alliance."

Rodriguez envisioned creating a culturally diverse "action-packed, general entertainment network in English for Latino and general audiences." Among the cable net's original and popular programs: From Dusk Till Dawn, Lucha Underground, The Chuey Martinez Show, and The Director's Chair, a series of specials featuring Rodriguez interviewing other directors, including Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter, Francis Ford Coppola and Guillermo del Toro.

“What was once only available to those with expensive cable packages is now available through a variety of mediums. The partnership with El Rey allows the channel to broaden its digital footprint, as well as expand the access of its incredible programming to audiences worldwide,” said Erick Opeka, President & Chief Strategy Officer at Cinedigm.

Rodriguez previously partnered with Univision before the network's launch in 2013, which helped in the promotion, sales and distribution. At the time, Univision was also trying to tap into the English-language Hispanic market. But the Spanish-language media efforts fizzled and El Rey struggled to find its audience and wide distribution on cable and satellite providers. The relationship with Univision ended in November 2020, a month before El Rey ceased operations.

Taking a full dive into the streaming space will give El Rey broader and direct access to its fan base. Cinedigm’s president is confident its strong advertising partner relationships "will allow the channel to generate substantial advertising revenue among a key demographic in the growing AVOD & FAST space.”

I just heard over the web. I don't know anything more but the condolences on his fb page (https://www.facebook.com/surawit.kang).

Sae was a stuntman who worked on Man at Arms with me. He was one of the stunt crew that I included in one of the interviews - MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR – SEASON 2: DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME (https://www.kungfumagazine.com/index.php?p=article&article=1451).

We hit it off and kept up an occasional correspondence. I'm shocked to hear of his passing.
