Even in the 70's, there was some of this stuff going on.
People love to fight and test their skills.
What eventually become MMA, an actual style, was originally nothing more than cross testing ( and eventually cross training) by real fighters that simple wanted to test how good they really were.
Of course this goes back to the very dawn of MA and what challenge matches actually were.
