Time to knuckle up.
Frank Grillo, Jamie Bell, Margaret Qualley and James Badge Dale are set to star in Donnybrook, a gritty indie thriller to be directed by Tim Sutton.
David Lancaster of the appropriately named Rumble Films is producing the pic, with BackUp Films financing.
The script, written by Sutton, has been described as being a backwoods version of “Fight Club meets True Romance” as it follows two men who try to get to the Donnybrook, a legendary backcountry bare-knuckle brawl where the winner gets $100,000.
Grillo will play Chainsaw Angus, a murderous drug dealer with serious anger issues, while Bell will portray Jarhead Earl, a man who wants to help his family by competing in the tournament.
Qualley will play Delia Angus, Chainsaw's sister, who also sells drugs, and Badge Dale will portray Whalen, a crooked cop with a drug habit.
Donnybrook is due to begin shooting Monday in Cincinnati. UTA Independent Film Group is repping North American rights.
Grillo, who played a key villain in the Captain America movies and starred in the Purge horror films, appeared in Wolf Warrior II, which this summer became the highest-grossing movie in China’s history. He next stars in Wheelman, the action movie directed by Jeremy Rush that is set to debut Friday on Netflix. Grillo is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Loeb & Loeb.
Bell has been starring on AMC’s Revolutionary War drama Turn: Washington Spies. He next toplines the drama Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, which also stars Annette Benning and made the festival rounds earlier this fall. Bell is repped by UTA, Artists Independent Management and Sloane Offer.
Qualley appeared on HBO’s The Leftovers and starred in Netflix’s horror movie Death Note. She is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Sloane Offer.
Dale next appears in the true-life firefighting drama Only the Brave with Josh Brolin and Jeff Bridges. He is repped by CAA, MJ Management and Jackoway Tyerman.
A promoter dangled an interview with Frank Grillo at me for his upcoming Netflix film Wheelman (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?70454-Wheelman), and I said I'd do it (but really wanted to chat with him about Wolf Warrior 2 (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?70311-Wolf-Warrior-2)) but I never heard back, so I'm skeptical it'll happen now, especially since Wheelman premieres this Friday. :(
