Are you scared to fight people? do you ever think that, **** this guy is sh!t hot i dont wanna get in the ring with him ?

In traditional karate, there are 3 things that let a warriors mind screw him up.
1 being afraid of the enemy because he is big and looks mean
2 Being afraid of the enemy because of his reputation
3) being afraid that your training isnt enough

Do any of these screw you up ? Or do you have a mental attitude of i will enter the ring with anybody.

what do bin laden and general custer have in common????

I can understand any fighter being scared of fighting for some more subtle reasons.

You never think of it during a fight, I guess, but there are plenty of stories of fighters ruining their bodies in a single encounter - even a controlled encounter. You might also be scared that if you don't get seriously injured, you will cause serious injury.

I have confidence in my ability to survive a fight, but I no longer cross-spar with instructors I don't know just in case they decide they want to prove something and I'm not good enough to stop them gently. One snapped knee and you're ****** long-term.

I don't fight competitively, but I reckon the "I can take anyone" mentality is dangerous in the street. Those for whom it might be true don't relish the thought; the rest end up in jail or hospital.

Its a contant war for me...
I have almost totaly beat it.

My only fights have been with a 180 puound pordorecan(sp) kid who has quite the rep.

I was losing...

I almost beat a 300 pound black kid with a big rep...

And I have more confidence now because I am better!

Lets see whats in store with me this year...

I think he means fights where the opponent is seriously attempting to hurt you.

I hate it when sparring and someone decides to prove something instead of learning.

I am always sizing up EVERYBODY. I dont think I have fear, but I do calculate 'the odds' everytime I look at someone.

I'm not so much scared to lose in combat as I am to lose in COURT.

For example, I'd fight - and HURT - Ralek in a heartbeat. But then I'd end up in jail and then would have to pay him more money than I'd have in a civil suit.

The way the law works is that the person with legitimate martial arts training is supposed to be accountable for restraint. Even if that stupid idiot ATTACKED me (which he definitely would), I'd still probably be found "guilty" by a jury.

So am I scared to fight people? You bet.

To be honest I don't like to spar much with people from other styles unless they belong to my school, no before I get jumped on let me explain. Most of the students in my class have had alot of training in other styles off the top of my head we've had tons of TKD blackbelts(they don't last), a Kenpo instructor and 2 guys in Akido on who is almost a blackbelt. I have had alot of friends in martial arts like tang soo do and others. When I spar with these guys it is always a ego challenge. We may not start out that way but it always turns into that. Now in class we take time out to spar the guys and thay use their other MA skills and we actually learn how to fight against other styles. If I am going to fight someone outside of my school it will be real, all out, anything goes. Cause when someone outside your school loses their is always an excuse. This way niether the other guy or me will be able to say anything except "I lost" and except it.

I think everyone get scared before fighting, but you learn to deal with it. I'm not afraid of fighting/full contact sparring with anyone. Once you accept the fact that you will get hit, it makes it easier. Also, once you get you'll get over that fear real quick - either that or get dropped. That being said, I don't even think I'd be scared to fight vanderlei silva - I will have already accepted the fact that I would get my a§§ beat, so it wouldn't be that bad. I'd probably even brag about it - it's not every day that you get to be beaten within an inch of your life by an axe murderer. :)

P.S. Joe, it's Puerto Rican - you get an 'A' for effort though. :)

****** seven you beat me to the Puerto Rico thing (wasnt sure that this was what joe meant though).

Well i dont have a lot of "ring" experience, but when i was in USA i was pretty **** pumped up before the fights, i wasnt exactly afraid i was just nervous as hell, going over what could happen and a lot of "ifs" and "buts". Adrenaline pumping and ****. But as soon as the guy told us to start fighting it all went away and i didnt feel a thing, i just went with the flow.

Another funny thing about fighting is that the injuries never seem to come until the day after :) Like the first guy i fought always put his hands on his chest (not as a block more as a knee jerk reaction) so i kicked his elbow a lot, it didnt bother me at all while fighting i just let it rip as hard as i could. Then after an hour or so everything swelled up and i stopped being able to walk, next day my instep was completely swollen, my shin was pretty bruised and for some reason my hip hurt like hell (no idea why).

All the small injuries you never even knew you got come up after the fight :)

I do admit though, that as for street situations i constantly wonder if my training will cut it once i get into some serious situation, i'm guessing that if that situation comes up the same thing will happen as before, and i will just get in the "zone", i might get my ass beat and i might not, but i doubt it will be because that during the fighting i was too afraid or wondering too much.

I get scared every time I fight. It's a helluva rush though.

Most actions of men can be explained by observing a pack of dogs. Not wild dogs, just neighborhood dogs who all scurry under the fence on the same night and set off together to reclaim a glimmer of the glory their species possessed before domestication.

weeell... I dont really care anymore how big they are or how mean they are, not much anyway. and I always asumes that my training will be enough, becouse i am good, not the best, not awsome.. but good. It is probebly the rep that has the biggest influence on me, i would think

Who would be scared of a small skinny guy named Yang Lu'chan anyways :P makes it easier to get your ass beat when you underestimate your opponent. Often fear puts things in perspective, just don't turn your fear into anger.

I'm scared I did'nt anticipate my enemys skill. I'm scared that I don't train hard enough or enough of the right techniques. I'm scared because I hate to fight. I'm scared because If I train too hard I could hurt myself.

Wong,
Because I'm always fighting my "inner demons" and stuff like that that messes with my head. :D
I like your posts.

(Sometimes it's hard to show "tone" or sarcasm when writing on the internet. :) Sorry. I asked "have you ever read some of my posts?"
making fun of the fact that I usually write about stuff like that. :)
