The filmmaker behind the $1.3 billion hit is expected to begin penning the follow-up next year, say sources.
Ryan Coogler is going back to Wakanda.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the filmmaker behind Marvel’s landmark Black Panther has quietly closed a deal to write and direct the sequel.

While the move was expected — Marvel wanted to keep the creative team as intact as possible and a sequel was never in any real doubt — the timing was always unclear.

Black Panther, centering on T'Challa, the king of a fictional African country, was an outsized success both commercially and critically. The pic, which starred Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero, grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and is also considered a contender for Oscar consideration. The movie became a defining cultural moment and touchstone, especially for the black community.

In the weeks prior and after the film’s February release, both Marvel and Coogler’s camp were hounded about when a sequel deal would be inked. Typically, a filmmaker is more than willing to quickly sign on for a follow-up, and a studio is eager to snap up a key piece of talent in the lead-up to or right after a successful opening. But Coogler’s camp shook off the peer pressure and took its time in making a deal, which occurred under the radar some time ago.

Sources say the plan at this stage is for Coogler to write the script next year with an eye to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020. Marvel and parent company Disney, however, have not made any official announcements about Marvel's slate of movies beyond the release of the next Avengers pic in May 2019 and a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel in July — and plans could shift.

Coogler is developing the drama Wrong Answer with his frequent collaborator and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. He also is executive producing LeBron James’ Space Jam sequel and acts in the same capacity on the upcoming Creed 2.

Unfortunately for Wakandians, the U.S. government will no longer partner with the fictional kingdom.

Until yesterday, Wakanda, the main setting of Marvel’s “Black Panther,” was listed as a free trade agreement partner of the U.S. on the agricultural tariff tracker maintained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service.

Francis Tseng, a research fellow at the Jain Family Institute, discovered the odd listing and tweeted about his confusion on Wednesday.

“The US would no doubt try to liberalize Wakanda’s markets and flood it with cheap subsidized corn,” Tseng said in a follow-up tweet.

The screenshots Tseng shared revealed the alleged agricultural products the U.S. traded with Wakanda: fresh vegetables, unroasted coffee beans, essential oils and livestock.

Wakanda was added to the tracker in July during a system test, meant to be deleted afterward.

“The Foreign Agricultural Service staff who maintain the Tariff Tracker have been using test files to ensure that the system is running properly,” a USDA spokesperson said in a statement. “The Wakanda information should have been removed after testing and has now been taken down.”

Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru are still listed as partners.

The USDA tweeted about the mishap on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Black icons Jackie Robinson and James Brown before finding fame as the regal Black Panther in the Marvel cinematic universe, died Friday of cancer, his representative said. He was 43.

Boseman died at his home in the Los Angeles area with his wife and family by his side, his publicist Nicki Fioravante told The Associated Press.

Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, his family said in a statement.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more - all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

Boseman had not spoken publicly about his diagnosis.

Born in South Carolina, Boseman graduated from Howard University and had small roles in television before his first star turn in 2013. His striking portrayal of the stoic baseball star Robinson opposite Harrison Ford in 2013′s “42” drew attention in Hollywood and made him a star.

Boseman died on a day that Major League Baseball was celebrating Jackie Robinson day.

“This is a crushing blow” actor and director Jordan Peele said on Twitter, one of many expressing shock as the news spread across social media.

“This broke me,” said actor and writer Issa Rae.

His T’Challa character was first introduced to the blockbuster Marvel movies in 2016′s “Captain America: Civil War,” and his “Wakanda Forever” salute reverberated around the world after the release of “Black Panther” two years ago.

The character was last seen standing silently dressed in a black suit at Tony Stark’s funeral in last year’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

Even at the outset of his Hollywood career, Boseman was clear-eyed about — and even skeptical of — the industry in which he would become an international star.

“You don’t have the same exact experience as a Black actor as you do as a white actor. You don’t have the same opportunities. That’s evident and true,” he told AP while promoting “42.” “The best way to put it is: How often do you see a movie about a black hero who has a love story — with a black woman, or any woman for that matter ... he has a spirituality. He has an intellect. It’s weird to say it, but it doesn’t happen that often.”

In addition to Robinson and Brown, Boseman portrayed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 2017′s “Marshall.“

He took on his first producing job in last year’s action thriller “21 Bridges,” in which he also starred, and was last seen on-screen in Spike Lee’s film “Da 5 Bloods” as the leader of a group of Black soldiers in the Vietnam War.

Get ready to see a whole lot more of Danai Gurira in the MCU, as the actress has closed a deal to reprise her role as Okoye in the upcoming Black Panther spinoff series coming to Disney+ as well as Ryan Coogler's upcoming sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The hot casting news was first tipped by the Hollywood Reporter in a list of top entertainment attorneys, though Collider has since confirmed it with sources close to the project. Representatives for Disney and Marvel had no comment.

The untitled Black Panther TV series, which will be set in the kingdom of Wakanda, hails from Coogler's Proximity Media banner. Plot details remain under wraps, but the ancient high-tech society provides fertile ground for a scripted series, and though it's unclear who will be joining Gurira on the show, Okyoe's involvement is a great start.

“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation. With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team," Disney's Bob Iger said in a recent statement when Coogler's Disney deal was announced.

Coogler is currently hard at work on the Black Panther sequel, which will not recast the title character in the wake of the tragic, untimely death of star Chadwick Boseman. That Marvel movie is currently set to hit theaters on July 8, 2022, and Proximity is eager to expand the story on the small screen. Coogler's collaborators include his wife, Zinzi Coogler, as well as Sev Ohanian, Archie Davis, Peter Nicks and composer Ludwig Göransson.

Gurira played Michonne on The Walking Dead before joining the Marvel universe, and she returned as Okoye in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. She's also attached to play Shirley Chisholm in an upcoming biopic. The actress, who has worked with directors ranging from Tom McCarthy to Wes Craven, is represented by UTA, Suskin Management and per the THR link above, attorney Jamie Mandelbaum. Letitia Wright has been hospitalized with minor injuries after a stunt rig accident on the set of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

“Letitia Wright sustained minor injuries today while filming a stunt for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’ She is currently receiving care in a local hospital and is expected to be released soon,” a spokesperson for Marvel said in a statement to Variety.

The film shoot was happening overnight in Boston, while the production for the “Black Panther” sequel is based in Atlanta. There is currently no impact to the movie’s shooting schedule.

In the first “Black Panther” movie, Wright was introduced as Shuri, the genius inventor and younger sister to T’Challa, played by the late Chadwick Boseman. She also appeared in the MCU team-up films “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Production on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” directed by Ryan Coogler, began in June 2021. Plot and cast details are being kept under wraps, but it’s expected that the main cast members Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba and Angela Bassett will return for the sequel to the Oscar-nominated movie.

Variety exclusively revealed last month that “I May Destroy You” creator and star Michaela Coel joined the cast in an unknown role. Additionally, it was revealed last week that Dominique Thorne, who will play the up-and-coming superhero Ironheart in her own Disney Plus TV series, will be introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ahead of her TV debut.

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will temporarily shut down production while actor Letitia Wright recovers from an on-set injury she suffered in August, Variety has confirmed. Production will pause starting the week of Thanksgiving and start back up in early 2022.

Wright’s injury occurred more than two months ago in late August while shooting a sequence involving a stunt rig on location in Boston. At the time, her injury was not expected to impact the film’s shooting schedule. Director Ryan Coogler and the rest of the production have been filming mostly in Atlanta since Wright was injured. She has stayed in London while the shoot continued without her.

“Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of ‘Black Panther 2’ and is looking forward to returning to work early 2022,” a statement from Wright’s reps reads. “Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.”

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is set to release on Nov. 11, 2022, after it was delayed recently from July 8, 2022. The new release date is expected to remain, despite the temporary shutdown.

As studios debate how to handle COVID-19 vaccine resistance, the Biden administration is moving forward with its own mandates that are pushing Hollywood to toe the line. Though a federal court recently halted vaccine and testing requirements for private businesses with 100 or more employees pending review, the White House said Nov. 8 that the private sector “should not wait.”

While that case is expected to head to the Supreme Court, a flurry of actors and actresses has quietly pushed back on studio mandates, which increasingly require those in Zone A on a production — where cast and crew work in close proximity — be vaccinated. (Studio sources say some religious exemptions are being given, though they are rare.)

“We’re really only considering those who are vaccinated,” one prolific producer tells The Hollywood Reporter about COVID requirements for features they’re working on. Another producer, gearing up for a big studio production, concurs: “We will not engage with anyone who is not vaccinated.” But enforcement will be key as studios ensure that workers, from talent to crew, show proof.

“Nobody wants an Aaron Rodgers situation,” says the studio producer of the NFL star who flouted COVID-19 guidelines before testing positive for the virus. (Rodgers’ fiancee, Shailene Woodley, has not publicly disclosed her vaccination status. She is in production on Showtime’s Three Women. A Showtime rep says the series has a Zone A vaccine mandate, indicating Woodley is vaccinated.)

In turn, news has leaked of stars exiting projects they had been set to topline. Ice Cube, for one, departed Sony’s comedy Oh Hell No after declining a request from producers to get vaccinated, thus forgoing a $9 million payday. Veteran General Hospital star Ingo Rademacher was let go after not complying with a vaccine mandate.

Logistical challenges await for studios that are working with stars who haven’t gotten the shot. Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Letitia Wright — who portrays the lead Shuri, the sister of Black Panther T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) — is not vaccinated, sources say. After sustaining an on-set injury in August, the Guyanese-born British actress went home to London.

Now, a return to the U.S. for a possible shoot in Atlanta, where Wakanda Forever is based, could be an issue. On Nov. 8, the CDC implemented rules that require all non-immigrant, non-citizen air travelers to the U.S. be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination status before boarding a plane. Wright is not a U.S. citizen. Disney declined to comment.

Wright’s U.K. rep pointed to a statement issued Nov. 5 to THR regarding the actress’ injury, prompting a shutdown of production that will begin the week of Thanksgiving (director Ryan Coogler is said to have filmed everything he can without her). The rep notes: “Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of Black Panther 2 and is looking forward to returning to work early 2022. Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.”

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever officially began its production hiatus for the remainder of 2021 today as it allows star Letitia Wright additional time to recuperate from an on-set injury earlier this year.

This morning, cast and crew of the sequel received a note direct from Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Nate Moore acknowledging the pause. It confirms that production will resume in January with Wright on board but indicates that her injuries, which included a fractured shoulder and a concussion, were more serious than initially realized. Deadline first reported the accident, which happened in August during a stunt on set in Boston.

It’s widely assumed that Wright’s character Shuri will take on a more prominent role in the sequel, and the note makes clear that there’s only so much shooting that can take place without one of the film’s stars. Wakanda Forever remains one of the most anticipated films on the studio’s 2022 release calendar, and, during a shift of several Marvel Studios titles, Disney recently moved its release date from July 8 to November 11, 2022, where it’s expected to remain. Sources say Wright also sent her own video message to the cast and crew thanking them for their support.

Here is the note sent to the cast and crew today with full details from Feige, Moore and D’Esposito:

As we wind down for the holidays, we wanted to send a note of thanks and appreciation for the hard work of our entire cast and crew, as well as an update on timing. First and foremost, this project is exceptional and something we know audiences are eager to see. We could not be any more excited to complete this film and share it with the world next year. Thank you for everything you’ve done to get us to this place.

Unfortunately, we’ve not gotten here without a few setbacks. Running a production of this scale in the midst of a pandemic is not an easy task, and you have remained diligent and professional throughout. In addition, as you are all aware, Letitia had a frightening accident on our set during a stunt back in August. It was a reminder of the importance of safety at all times in our work, which we know you understand and are committed to. What we had initially thought were minor injuries turned out to be much more serious with Letitia suffering a critical shoulder fracture, and a concussion with severe side effects. It has been a painful process and Letitia has been home recovering with her doctors and the support of family.

We’ve adjusted our production schedule so she has the time she needs to heal, but there’s only so much we can do without Shuri! We also want to thank Letitia for everything she’s doing to get back to the set – we know how much she loves this role, how tough it’s been for her to be away, and how hard she’s working to recover as quickly as she safely can. We are eagerly awaiting her return and we know we will all come back stronger together.

Consider this weekend the calm before the storm.

“Black Adam,” a comic book adventure starring Dwayne Johnson, loomed over box office charts for the third weekend in a row with $18.5 million in North American ticket sales. It was another quiet period at the movies as theater operators eagerly await Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which looks to invigorate the lackluster fall box office when it opens on Nov. 11.

After three weeks of release, “Black Adam” has generated $137.3 million in North America and $319 million globally. It’s a solid result, one that improves greatly upon another recent DC entry, 2021’s “The Suicide Squad” (which tapped out with $168 million globally while playing simultaneously on HBO Max in North America) and it’ll soon pass 2019’s Shazam!” (which earned $366 million worldwide). However, the latest Warner Bros. standalone superhero story still has ways to go to justify its massive $195 million production budget.

In second place, a new anime film titled “One Piece Film: Red” collected $9.475 million from 2,367 North American theaters. It’s another modest win for Crunchyroll, a specialty anime label, following recent anime releases like “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” ($38 million domestically) and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie” ($34 million domestically). Since those films carry relatively small production and marketing budgets, they don’t need to break box office records to rationalize their price tags.

“Sony-owned Crunchyroll has built a very popular business for their Japanese anime,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “It’s impressive.”

“Ticket to Paradise,” a romantic comedy with Julia Roberts and George Clooney, landed at the No. 3 spot with $8.5 million from 4,066 venues, dropping just 14% in its third weekend. The film has generated $46.7 million in North America and looks to continue its crowd-pleasing run through the rest of fall. Despite the challenges facing rom-coms at the box office, “Ticket to Paradise” has managed to defy expectations (thanks, of course, to the combined charm of its stars) with $90.4 million at the international box office and $137 million worldwide. Universal spent $60 million on the movie.

At the No. 4 spot, Paramount’s surprise hit “Smile” generated $4 million from 3,046 cinemas, bringing its domestic tally to $99 million. As the psychological horror film nears the $100 million mark in North America, “Smile” crossed $200 million globally — a stellar tally for a $17 million-budgeted film.

Lionsgate’s supernatural thriller “Prey for the Devil” rounded out the top five with $3.87 million from 2,980 locations, a 48% drop from its debut. Through Sunday, the low-budget film has generated a lackluster $13.64 million.

Outside of the top five, the buzzy slasher film “Terrifier 2″ continued to impress, landing in 10th place with $1.2 million from 1,245 cinemas over the weekend. The independent movie, which is produced by Bloody Disgusting and distributed by Iconic Releasing, is already wildly profitable since it has grossed $9.8 million on its $250,000 budget.

At No. 7, director Martin McDonough’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” an Irish-set film starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as life-long friends at an impasse, earned $2 million from 895 theaters. As the Searchlight film expands slowly, it has grossed $3 million to date.

In eighth place, “Till” stayed steady with $1.875 million from 2,136 screens. The emotional biopic, featuring Danielle Deadwyler as the mother of Emmett Till, has generated $6.5 million after four weeks of release, a decent result for a drama aimed at adult audiences.

Another specialty title, James Grey’s semi-autobiographical “Armageddon Time,” struggled to break out as it expanded to 1,006 venues. The Focus Features film, starring Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, brought back $810,000 — translating to a bleak $802 per location. So far, “Armageddon Time” has generated $902,000.

Overall, the box office brought in a sluggish $59.4 million over the weekend, according to Comscore. Even with the surprise success of “Smile” and better-than-expected turnouts for “Black Adam” and “Ticket to Paradise,” movie theater owners are needing a blockbuster (or two) to carry them through the winter. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the sequel to the billion-dollar smash, should deliver on the goods, with box office experts predicting an opening weekend between $175 million and $200 million.

“Next weekend,” Franchise Entertainment Research’s Gross says, “business returns to world-class form with the opening of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.'”

McDonald's is giving moviegoers something to smile about this month.

The fast-food chain debuted a limited-edition Happy Meal in anticipation of Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, hitting theaters Nov. 11. Each Happy Meal will include one of ten Wakanda Forever superhero toys based on characters from the movie, from fan favorites like Shuri and Okoye to newcomers like Namor and Ironheart.

According to Jennifer Healan, VP of U.S. Marketing, Brand Content and Engagement at McDonald's, the first Black Panther movie inspired the fast-food giant to create the new meal.

She shared in a statement: "It set a whole new standard for representation on the big screen. And now, we're excited to bring that experience to our restaurants and help fans see and celebrate their inner hero with this new Happy Meal – because seeing is believing."

The new Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Happy Meal will "help fans see and celebrate their inner hero," she added.

The new movie comes two years after Chadwick Boseman's death in 2020 and incorporates the franchise star's loss into the sequel.

An official synopsis from Marvel states that Wakanda Forever follows Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M'Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) as they "fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death."

Those who got an early viewing of the film are speaking highly of it ahead of its theatrical release.

Critic Tessa Smith wrote on Twitter that Wakanda Forever "feels like a war movie," commending Tenoch Huerta's performance as the villain Namor.

"It's emotional, heavy, intense & phenomenal. Namor is an incredible & powerful villain," Smith wrote. "#WakandaForever focuses on grief, loss, & vengeance. You aren't ready for the Marvel logo & mid credit. It honors Chadwick perfectly."

"Coogler delivers a soulful, wondrous sequel that packs an emotional punch & effectively explores relevant world themes," film critic Fico Cangiano wrote. "A beautiful tribute to Boseman's legacy. Letitia & Tenoch are great, & the mid-credits scene is really moving."

The Disney people really do not understand the strength of the Marvel Comic Universe and that lack of understanding carries over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Boseman's death should not be reason to discontinue T'challah. Another actor should have been used. The Black Panther's demise was a SERIOUS mistake. If they bring back Iron Man, they should bring back T'challah.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” was named best picture at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, capping off an improbable awards season run by winning the movie business’s highest honor.

The film, a gonzo adventure about a Chinese-American laundromat owner grappling with an IRS audit and inter-dimensional attackers, earned seven statues, including original screenplay and directing honors for its creators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as the Daniels). The victory is a triumph for A24, the indie studio that pushed the zany film to an impressive $100 million at the box office, a stunning achievement at a time when the market for arthouse movies has shriveled. The studio also managed the rare feat of nabbing all four acting honors — three of which were won by “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and one by “The Whale.”

It was a night of comebacks and reassessments. “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to be recognized as best actress. The honor came after a long career in martial arts and action movies like “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and “Yes, Madam.”

“Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are past your prime,” Yeoh said. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” she added.

Brendan Fraser took best actor honors for his performance as a morbidly obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter in “The Whale.” Fraser, once a prominent actor known for his work in popcorn flicks such as “George of the Jungle” and “The Mummy,” had spent the last decade and change away from the spotlight dealing with health and personal struggles. His win continues his remarkable resurgence.

“I started in this business 30 years ago, and this – they certainly didn’t come easily to me, but there was a facility that I didn’t appreciate at the time until it stopped,” Fraser said, acknowledging his career setbacks. He thanked his director Darren Aronofsky for “throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard.”

Ke Huy Quan won best supporting actor for his performance as Yeoh’s frazzled husband in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” A former child star who appeared in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “The Goonies,” Quan had given up on acting in recent years, frustrated by his lack of opportunities. Accepting his award, he fought back tears while sharing his personal history.

“My journey started on a boat,” he said. “I spent a year in a refugee camp and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This is the American dream.”

“Dreams are something that you have to believe in,” he added. “I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, a veteran headliner of horror hits such as “Halloween” and the daughter of Hollywood legends Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, won best supporting actress for her turn as an IRS inspector in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Curtis dedicated her statue “to all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I’ve made for all these years” and also acknowledged her family history in entertainment, noting, “my mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories.” Choking up, she ended with: “I just won an Oscar.”

With its multiverse storyline, and off-beat touches such as a character with hot dog hands and weaponized *****s, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” represents a radical departure from the kind of staid prestige fare that historically dominated the Oscars, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has changed dramatically in recent years. In the wake of the#OscarsSoWhite controversy after no actors of color were nominated in two consecutive years, the Academy made a big push in 2016 to diversify the pool of voters. In subsequent years its membership has gotten younger, and now includes more people of color and women.

The ceremony unfolded at a tense time for Hollywood. As consumers have shifted away from cable and towards subscription streaming services, major studios and their corporate parents have spent a lot of time and coin launching their own in-house Netflix challengers. The entertainment industry has also undergone a period of consolidation, with Discovery merging with WarnerMedia, Disney buying much of 21st Century Fox and Amazon snatching MGM, deals that in the first two cases left the purchaser with a lot of debt on their balance sheet. Investors have become increasingly concerned that major media companies are over-leveraged and that the new ways that they are making money with streaming have failed to replace the old ways they once profited from such as cable subscriptions and movie ticket sales. That’s hurt the share prices of everyone from Netflix to Disney to the newly rechristened Warner Bros. Discovery, sparking a period of layoffs and cost-cutting. With a possible recession looming and studios facing tangled labor negotiations with the unions representing writers, directors and actors that could lead to strikes, there were dark clouds gathering that could have overshadowed the Oscars’ celebratory air.

Presiding over it all and (mostly) keeping things light and breezy was Jimmy Kimmel, returning for the third time as the host of the Oscars. The late night comic wasted no time bringing up the big moment from last year’s ceremony, when Will Smith charged the stage and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head (Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia which leads to hair loss).

“If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during this show you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute-long speech,” Kimmel joked.

“If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year — nothing,” he added. “Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug.”

“All Quiet on the Western Front,” an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel about trench life during World War I, picked up four Oscars, including the prize for best international features. Other major winners included “Pinocchio,” Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion musical, which was named best animated film, as well as “Women Talking,” which earned best adapted screenplay for Sarah Polley.

“Navalny,” a look at Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, won best documentary. Yulia Navalny, the imprisoned politician’s wife, came to the stage after the award was announced with a message aimed at Vladimir Putin. “I’m dreaming of the day when you will be free and our country will be free,” she said.

The Oscars did opt not to wade fully into international affairs. For the second year in a row, the program turned down overtures by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address the global audience about his country’s struggles against Russia’s illegal invasion.

This year’s crop of best picture nominees included smaller films such as “Triangle of Sadness” and “Tár,” but also several popular favorites like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” It’s unclear how much the inclusion of these blockbusters will lift this year’s viewership, but the Oscars have been on a ratings nosedive. Last year’s telecast drew an audience of 16.6 million, the second-lowest ratings in its history. In contrast, in 2014, the Oscars drew 43 million viewers, a sign of the telecast’s precipitous drop in popularity.

The Oscars made some notable cosmetic changes, subbing in a champagne-colored carpet for the usual red one. That choice, however, led to some last minute scrambling after a rainy weekend left organizers cutting up sections of the carpet that had been ruined by the bad weather and dirty shoe soles. However, some near disasters were averted. On Saturday, Ovation Hollywood, the shopping center and entertainment complex that hosts the Academy Awards, suffered power outages. By Sunday, though, the skies cleared and the only sign of flickering lights were the flashbulbs greeting the stars as they made their way into the auditorium.
