being in the right (or most favourable) place at the right time, so your opponent cannot be there.

Using the centreline...
The opponents central axis is always in the same place regardless of our position whether it be straight on or from the side, etc.. By keeping our centreline square to the opponent's central axis we are always able to control the opponent.

Taking the centreline...
Take control of the centreline and dominate the opponent by destabilizing his base therefore eliminating his stability and ability to effectively strike back. Attack through to the opponent's central axis where power and stability are stored. Most attackers do not attack directly on or to the centre so many opponent's are not used to defending this kind of attack.

My opinion of course...I am not sure if this is the type of answer being looked for or not.

I have a feeling you try to let on to everyone else the same thing by not giving out information or giving out just enough to have someone believe that you know what youre talking about; but seeing as how you never give a straight answer, I highly doubt it...not to mention you're a pr1ck about it too.

But to each their own. You're intentions were good with this thread but as usual your winning personality screwed it all up.

Here's a thought, and maybe its just me, but why dont you try to be a little more like the other more educated people in here, and actually try helping someone instead of criticizing their every comment.

Allow me to return the favor with a thought for YOU Vankuen.

Why don't you pick a style, any style, stick with it, and be as proficient as realistically possible, considering the obvious limitations that you have, in ONE thing, instead of a wanna-be-everybody-else-but-need-to-establish-my-individuality-by-creating-my-own-style martial artist.

The centerline is the line between your central axis (sometimes called the motherline) and your opponent's. Therefore, the centerline is the shortest distance between you and your opponent. If you occupy this centerline, your offensive strikes will travel a shorter route than your opponent's. On the other hand, your opponent's strikes will travel a less direct route because he does not occupy the centerline.

What do you think of WingMan's statement?
---------------------------------
Sounds very very familar. I say the same thing-
based on my foundations in my lineage (Augustine Fong-Ho kam ming-Yip Man)in my 1995 article
entitled "Defending the Motherline;Wing Chun's sil lim tao" in the Journal of Asian martial Arts.
Vol.4, no 4 and other follow up articles in Inside
Kung Fu(first special issue on wing chun-on the bot jam do) and Kungfu-qigong(current Novemeber/Dec issue)dealing with using bong, tan and fok in chi sao and controlling the line.

Yes, you are right yuan fen. When Whipping Hand asked about what is meant by occupying the centerline, I immediately remembered this article. This is a very interesting article. I must say that this is a "must read" for all wing chun beginners. It explains the basic theory of wing chun.

"Therefore, the centerline is the shortest distance between you and your opponent"

What if there is a limb that is closer to you than the opponents centre line? Do you just ignore it? It is not ALWAYS favourable to strike on the centreline, some people get over involved in the centreline and forget everything else. It is what it is; and it isn't everything.

Sheesh sorry that sounds a bit anal, but there you go.

If your opponent's limb occuppies the centerline, then attack it. His limb provides a bridge between you and your opponent.

joy chaudhuri
11-20-2001, 11:39 AM
has it right. Also depending on context you can attack and defend at the same time- tan da, pak da
etc.The bridge is connected to the castle..use the bridge.

quote:
The bridge is connected to the castle..use the bridge.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[/quote]

Most castles have drawbridges which can be raised or lowered. The bridge is the centerline which connects you and your opponent (castle). If your opponent's limbs occupy the centerline, you have the following options:

Option#1:
Use the bridge to attack your opponent.
If the "drawbridge" is lowered, your "troops" can use it to storm the "castle". When you make contact with the opponent's bridge, control it and look for an openning. Once an openning is found, attack the "castle".

Option#2:
Destroy the bridge.
The enemy can also use the drawbridge to attack you. To prevent him from doing so, destroy the bridge. This is the time you attack the opponent's limbs.

Option#3
Make your own bridge.
If the opponent doesn't offer his bridge to you (the drawbridge is raised), make your own bridge. Just like in the movies, soldiers prop ladders against the castle walls and climb the ladders. If the opponent refuses to make contact, move in and make contact.

I don't know if this is what yuan fen meant by his quote. This is just my opinion. I'm interested in what he has to say.

joy chaudhuri
11-21-2001, 03:20 AM
pretty good anlysis of the analogy. There is more but I dont want to bore the list. I had no idea that there was wing chun in Cebu city!
Best wishes, Joy.
