Aquaman 2 Won't Be James Wan's Next Movie (https://comicbook.com/dc/2019/06/27/aquaman-2-wont-be-james-wans-next-movie/)
By RUSS BURLINGAME - June 27, 2019 06:28 pm EDT

In spite of a studio high on Aquaman enough to greenlight not only a second one but a horror spinoff based on the characters in The Trench, filmmaker James Wan has other commitments to fulfill before beginning production on the seafaring sequel. While there were rumors that The Trench might be produced before Aquaman 2, most fans had hoped and expected that Wan's attention would be alrgely focused on the world of Aquaman once Annabelle Comes Home wrapped its press tour. Instead, during an interview in support of that movie, Wan teased a mystery project coming up that will likely be the next thing he films.

There has been little in the way of clear information about the sequel, which will follow DC's highest-grossing film of all time at the box global box office. The expectation is that Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) will return, and some rumors have suggested that The Others, a group of elite Atlantean metahumans, will play a role in the story. One of The Others was briefly rumored to be making an appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

“It won’t be Aquaman 2 just yet,” Wan told CinemaBlend (as seen in the video below), adding, “I have something else I’m cooking up; I’m not ready to share just yet.”

Wan was previously bullish on returning for a sequel right away, according to a previous interview with ComicBook.com. The filmmaker expressed his desire to tackle new challenges, having made entries and started his own established franchises like Saw, Insidious, the Conjuring, and Fast & Furious.

"I mean, liking the people I work with goes a long way," Wan said. "That was the reason why I came back when I did Insidious 2. But it's a weird one for me, because I actually don't know what I want to do next for the first time in my career. I felt like Aquaman ticked a lot of boxes for me. I want to do another action movie after Furious 7, I wanted to do a world creation film, and I wanted to do a superhero movie, and Aquaman literally ticked all of those boxes for me. And so right now, I'm in that sort of place of like do I kind of go back and do a smaller movie maybe as my next one, something a bit more intimate. Or if I can do a personal movie, but maybe it's on a bigger scale. I'm not sure at this point."

Aquaman 2 is slated for December 16, 2022. Upcoming DC films include Joker on October 10, 2019, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. Shazam! will be available on streaming video on demand services, DVD, and Blu-ray in July.

A tease...

James Gunn reassures DC fans amid rumors about future movies: 'We're still just beginning' (https://ew.com/movies/james-gunn-reassures-fans-rumors-future-dc-movies/)
"Building the next 10 years of story takes time," the new co-chair of DC Films tweeted following reports that projects like Wonder Woman 3 or a Black Adam sequel could be dead.

James Gunn wants to reassure fans about his plans for future DC movies.

The Suicide Squad director was recently named co-chair of DC Films alongside producer Peter Safran, and though they won't present their plans to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav until next week, The Hollywood Reporter reports that big changes could be in store, including the potential end of Gal Gadot's time as Wonder Woman.

Representatives for WBD have not responded to EW's request for comment on THR's report, but Gunn himself posted a thread to Twitter on Thursday directly referencing it. Although he didn't confirm or deny specifics, he communicated that he and Safran are prioritizing DC's stories and characters.

"As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven't decided yet whether it's true or not," Gunn wrote in the first tweet, without elaborating which was which.

In another tweet, Gunn continued, "Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we're still just beginning."

WB representatives did not respond to EW's request for additional comment on Gunn's tweets.

Gunn first made his name as a superhero director at Marvel with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He recently oversaw the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and the new trailer for next year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 teases one last adventure for the space-faring misfits as the director dedicates his full attention to DC (where he has already overseen the Peacemaker show for HBO Max, featuring John Cena's character from The Suicide Squad).

According to the aforementioned THR report, which was based entirely on unnamed sources, DC is not moving ahead with Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3. A long-awaited Man of Steel sequel starring Henry Cavill's Superman may also be dead in the water, even though Cavill recently reprised the role in the post-credits scene for Black Adam. Shortly afterward, he ended his other big franchise commitment by departing Netflix's The Witcher.

Speaking of Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, a sequel is also said to be "unlikely" given the film's middling box office performance. Tweets this week from Johnson and Gadot — the former asserting that Black Adam actually will turn a profit, and the latter saying she "can't wait to share [Wonder Woman's] next chapter with you" — could be indicative of ongoing debates within the studio.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and the long-delayed The Flash starring Ezra Miller are still on track to hit theaters next year, but how they connect to other films remains unclear.

"As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait," Gunn wrote in the final tweet in his thread. "We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer."

Jason Momoa says his future as Aquaman is 'not looking too good' (https://ew.com/jason-momoa-aquaman-future-not-looking-good-8417147)
"I don't necessarily want it to be the end..."
By Emlyn Travis Published on December 16, 2023

Jason Momoa is getting candid about the future of the Aquaman franchise.

The Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star speculated that his time playing Arthur Curry is likely coming to a close.

"I don’t necessarily want it to be the end... [but] I don’t think it's really, like, a choice," Momoa told Entertainment Tonight in an interview this week, adding that DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran want “to start their new thing up.”

A third Aquaman film was not among the many DCU titles Gunn and Safran unveiled during their slate announcement back in January. That doesn’t mean, however, that Momoa has lost all hope of picking up his trident for a third time in the future.

"The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there's a possibility," he said. “But right now, I’m like, 'It's not looking too good.’”

Momoa, who is an ocean activist, has long shared his adoration for Aquaman and would like the chance to see the superhero grow in more films. "I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time," Momoa said. "I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like, there's a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it."

Gunn has stated that movies that are not part of his and Safran's new, cohesive vision for the comic book universe — like Matt Reeves’ forthcoming Batman sequel — would be considered "Elseworlds" entries, which may offer another chance for future Aquaman installments too.

And Momoa would be happy to reprise the role if Gunn and Safran are interested. “If there’s a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it,” he said. “This is my home. Warner and DC is definitely my home. So, that’s all I’ll say.”

When asked if he'd be up for shooting a third Aquaman film in September, director James Wan told EW that he wasn’t sure what the future holds. "I don't know," he said at the time. This film has taken up so, so much of my life, so much of my time, all I can think about now is taking a long break."

Momoa first made waves as Arthur in 2017’s Justice League before starring in his own standalone superhero film in 2018. The character's long-awaited sequel washes into theaters on Dec. 20.
