This is a modern jianghu tale by China’s leading 6th gen Director Jia Zhangke. It’s the first of his films that I’ve seen and has been getting international critical acclaim including entry for Cannes Plam D’or. It’s a 2+ hour existential film and I generally disdain existential films. Life is existential enough so I want my movies to have more of a point. That being said, there are some tremendous long single shots including a decent street fight and a powerhouse dramatic scene - the lead actress Zhao Tao is fantastic. There's really only that one fight scene. This is a dramatic film, not an actioner by any means. It capture the sights and abounds of PRC very well - so much brought me right back there. My wife liked it, which says a lot because her tolerance for Chinese film is low (too many bad Kung fu movies). I’m glad to have seen it but expected more.
