Put on by Shaolin Temple of Canada, close to Bridgeport and No. 5 roads, from Sept. 15 to Sept. 22, the event gathers kung fu masters, artists and performers from China.

The international Shaolin Cultural Festival, including a performance by a troupe of 18 monks from the Chinese Shaolin Temple, is expected to ignite Richmondites’ enthusiasm for Chinese martial arts and promote the cultural exchange between Canada and China.

Held at Shaolin Temple of Canada, close to Bridgeport and No.5 roads, from Sept. 15 to Sept. 22, the event gathers Kung Fu masters, artists and performers from China, showcasing martial arts and Chinese paintings to local audiences, according to Master Yandi Shi.

“Our mission is to facilitate the relationships between Canada and China; we want people to see the martial arts doesn’t just belong to China, but also belongs to everyone here,” said Shi, adding that “Hopefully each Richmondite could pass peace and love through the event to friends and families.”

Shaolin Kung Fu, one of the oldest, largest, and most popular styles of Chinese martial arts, originated and was developed in the Shaolin Temple in central Henan province in China.

A group of 18 monks will present martial arts with double-bladed knives, chain whips and other tools.

Another event titled as “Shaolin Dream: Kung Fu night,” a huge celebration showcasing the skillful and evocative performances of Chinese Kung Fu masters, will perform at Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby on Sept. 22. Other festival offerings will take place at 12820 Clarke Place in Richmond.

I'm not quite sure if this is legitimately another International Shaolin Cultural Festival. The link above goes to the Shaolin Canada Cultural Center, and that has not updated events since February of this year at this posting. I didn't find anything on the official Shaolin Temple site (http://www.shaolin.org.cn/en/index.aspx) either (but that site can be challenging to navigate sometimes).

The Michael J. Fox Theatre site shows this:

As of now, I'm treating this like the 5th International Shaolin Cultural Festival. If it isn't an official one, just some odd news item, well, we'll just leave this here until there is one. ;)

Unfortunately it's way too short notice for us to attend. :(
