The Witcher’s diverse cast is criticized in China (https://www.abacusnews.com/culture/witchers-diverse-cast-criticized-china/article/3043873)

China has had trouble embracing a diverse cast in the past, after viewers slammed the new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid
The Witcher franchise has a large following in China, largely because of CD Projekt Red’s famous video games, adapted from the stories of Polish novelist Andrzej Sapkowski. The new Netflix show based on the series has had a decent reception in the country. But others are struggling to see past the skin color of some characters.

“US show Witcher has inevitably gone overboard with political correctness,” a popular Chinese online commentary read.

The Witcher series is inspired by Slavic folklore, and many of the characters in the game are white. The Netflix series, released just ahead of Christmas, features actors of different ethnicities.

Three major characters, for instance, are all portrayed as white in the games: Yennefer of Vengerberg, Triss Merigold and Fringilla Vigo. In the Netflix series, all three are played by non-white actors.

One popular comment on Fringilla’s appearance showcases the racism from some viewers in China.

“So there will come a season in which we see the bodies of Geralt and the black Fringilla intertwined for nearly the entire season. Every time I think of this, I have to admire the professionalism of Henry Cavill,” says the most upvoted comment under a story about the Netflix series on GamerSky, a major Chinese gaming site.

It’s not just the characters that don’t match their gaming counterparts that are drawing complaints. Dara, an elf invented for the series, is played by black actor Wilson Radjou-Pujalte.

“Not that it is unacceptable to plug in a bunch of black actors. But at least it has to make sense… In the universe of The Witcher, there are no black elves,” a Chinese commentator wrote.

It’s not the first time Chinese viewers have complained about diversity. There were complaints over Disney’s upcoming live-action movie The Little Mermaid, after black actress Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel.

Despite the complaints, The Witcher has had a decent reception in China. At the time of publication, the show rates a decent 7.6 on Douban, China’s movie hub.

And it’s worth noting that the diverse cast did meet resistance in the West as well when the actors were first announced last year. The show’s writer, Beau DeMayo, came out and defended their decisions by pointing out that The Witcher is not set in the real world.

“The Continent is a fantasy world that’s racial dynamics are played allegorically between fantasy species — not skin color or Earthly race,” DeMayo said.

Don't know the game and haven't watched the show although I'm told the first episode has a nice bit of swordplay, so I might tune in for that.

Henry Cavill was injured in the U.K. while filming season 2 of Netflix's The Witcher, according to multiple reports.

The 37-year-old actor, who plays Geralt of Rivia in the hit fantasy series, reportedly hurt his leg while strapped into a harness and performing on an assault course at Arborfield Studios, Berks, where the show is filmed, according to The Sun, which first reported the news on Sunday.

According to Entertainment Weekly and Deadline, production on the series has continued, although Cavill is expected to be sidelined for a short time.

Reps for Cavill and Netflix did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Production on season 2 of The Witcher was previously halted back in March, when series newcomer and former Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju tested positive for coronavirus.

The studio, located outside of London, was shut down and underwent a deep clean.

Production was able to resume in August. At the time, Netflix announced the plan to resume with a poem: "I'm dusting off my lute and quill, I have some news, some mead to spill: After all the months we've been apart, it's time for production to restart. The Witcher and his bard — who's flawless, will reunite on set 17 August."

In October, Netflix released a first look photo of Cavill's Geralt in armor for the new season. The streamer also released a synopsis for season 2.

"Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen," read the official logline. "While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside."

The Witcher is based on an eight-book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

According to The Wrap, in addition to Hivju, the second season will also welcome Killing Eve star Kim Bodnia, Yasen Atour, Agnes Born, Paul Bullion, Thue Ersted Rasmussen, Aisha Fabienne Ross and Mecia Simson.

Season 1 of The Witcher is currently streaming on Netflix. I still haven't watched this show. I'm back on Netflix. Any recommendations?

The Witcher is bolstering its season 3 cast with a quartet of actors to play characters that are largely familiar to fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.

Netflix announced Thursday that the fantasy drama has added Robbie Amell (Upload), Meng’er Zhang (Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings), Hugh Skinner (Fleabag) and Christelle Elwin (Half Bad) to the cast.

Amell will play Gallatin, “a born fighter, Gallatin leads an army of guerrilla Scoia’tael fighting on behalf of Nilfgaard. Unafraid to speak his truth, Gallatin’s loyalty to his people ultimately leads him on a collision course with Francesca over power.”

Zhang will play Milva, “a human adopted by the dryads of Brokilon Forest, Milva is a fierce and talented huntress. Exact archery skills coupled with a stone-cold aptitude for survival make her a formidable adversary in the unforgiving Continent – those that cross her, do so at their peril.”

Skinner is Prince Radovid, a “royal playboy and younger brother to King Vizimir, Radovid finds himself suddenly a man on the inside of the Redanian Intelligence. With his good looks and often drunken charm, Radovid surprises with how incisive he can be in matters of politics, but it’s all games until someone gets hurt.”

Elwin is Mistle, “a member of The Rats, a gang of misfit teenagers who steal from the rich and give to themselves – and sometimes the poor. She is street hard, suspicious of everyone and out for revenge, until a chance meeting that will change everything.”

They join returning stars Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan, along with Joey Batey, MyAnna Buring, Tom Canton, Jeremy Crawford, Eamon Farren, Mahesh Jadu, Terence Maynard, Lars Mikkelsen, Mimî M Khayisa, Royce Pierreson, Wilson Mbomio, Anna Shaffer, Therica Wilson-Read, Cassie Clare, Mecia Simson, Graham McTavish, Bart Edwards, Simon Callow, Liz Carr, Ed Birch and Kaine Zajaz.

Here’s Netflix’s description of the new season: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is showrunner and executive producer.

The new season has begun filming but there’s no word on a release date as of yet.
