Marvel is moving the action from the 1990s to the present day with scribe Megan McDonnell.

A sequel to Marvel's billion-dollar-grossing Captain Marvel is officially in the works.

The company has tapped rising scribe Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the Marvel-based series WandaVision, to pen a script for a follow-up to the 2019 pic that starred Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson. McDonnell is in final negotiations to seal her deal.

Sources say that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the initial film hit, will not return to helm the sequel but are in talks to remain in the Marvel Universe and direct a possible Disney+ series. Marvel is hoping to find a female filmmaker for Captain Marvel 2 and is eyeing a potential 2022 release.

Details of any high-flying take were not revealed, but the new story will move the setting from the 1990s of the original movie to the present day.

Marvel had no comment.

Captain Marvel had several writers on it, including Nicole Perlman, Meg LeFauve and Geneva Robertson-Dworet as well as Boden and Fleck.

Larson played Carol Danvers, a human who becomes involved in the war between two alien races, the Kree and shape-shifting Skrulls. Surviving an explosion tied to an alien engine imbued her with incredible power, making her one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something she proved during her subsequent appearance in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel has been mostly mum on Captain Marvel 2. The Disney division’s head Kevin Feige did tease it at San Diego Comic-Con in July during the company’s Hall H panel, when at the very end of the session he blurted out, "We didn't even mention that we're making Black Panther 2 and we didn't mention that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is coming. We didn't even have time to talk about Captain Marvel 2, by the way. I didn't even have time to talk about The Fantastic Four. And there's no time left to talk about mutants."

Captain Marvel was Marvel’s first female-centric movie and proved to be an overperformer at the box office, generating over $1.1 billion worldwide.

McDonnell is a relatively new writer, with WandaVision her first major credit. The upcoming show is a spinoff that will air on Disney+ and brings back Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Avengers heroes Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and the Vision, respectively. The project, currently in production, also brings back the Captain Marvel kid character of Monica Rambeau, now an adult. In comics lore, Rambeau was an iteration of Captain Marvel. McDonnell began the show as a staff writer and then was promoted to story editor.

She is repped by Verve, Good Fear and Gang Tyre.

Captain Marvel 2 Fan Petition Demands Brie Larson Be Replaced by a Gay Woman of Color (https://movieweb.com/captain-marvel-2-petition-remove-brie-larson/)

A new fan-made petition is calling Brie Larson to step down as Carol Danvers before Captain Marvel 2 begins production. The creators of the petition want Larson to step up and prove that she is a true "ally of social justice." This is just one of many petitions that have been started over the past few years to get some attention, usually from a negative standpoint. It happened just last summer with Game of Thrones fans who were upset with the final season of the hit HBO series and petitioned to have the network hire a new team of writers to redo it.

The latest Captain Marvel petition, titled "Demand Captain Marvel is Played By a Woman of Color, Not Brie Larson!," has a goal of 30,000 signatures and already has north of 28,000. Marvel Studios has received, or been aware, of these petitions more than once as certain factions of the fandom take offense to certain things. One thing that some of these fans took offense to was the casting of Larson. Now, they have a petition to remove her before production on Captain Marvel 2 begins. You can read the petition's mission statement below.

"We need Brie Larson to step down from her role to prove she is an ally of social justice and ensure a gay woman of color plays the role. Let Monica, the original female & BLACK Captain Marvel instead of white-washing characters for the benefit of the straight, white men running Disney."
Brie Larson is used to this type of trolling and has been ever since she was hired to star in Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. She has been criticized for not smiling enough, which she then turned around and trolled the trolls with. She has also been called out for being too much of a "social justice warrior" by some of these more negative fans. The latest petition goes on to call out the actress for only donating to The Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation.

These upset Marvel fans are referring to Monica Rambeau, who is really the first female version of the Captain Marvel character. Rambeau first appeared in Marvel Comics back in 1982. However, as cool as that would have been, that is not the version Kevin Feige and his crew went with. They chose Academy Award winning actress Brie Larson instead to go with the more familiar version of the comic book character.

As for Brie Larson and Marvel Studios, they are currently gearing up for production on a Captain Marvel sequel. It was just announced that Megan McDonnell is penning the sequel's script and it is rumored that the movie will be hitting theaters a lot sooner than originally thought. If these rumors end up being true, we will see Carol Danvers back on the big screen in 2022, which is only a few years away. You can check out the latest petition over at The Petition Site (https://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/972/607/589/).

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta, director of the highly anticipated horror reimagining of “Candyman,” will direct “Captain Marvel 2” for Marvel Studios, Variety has confirmed.

DaCosta replaces Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who helmed 2019’s “Captain Marvel” to a $426.8 million domestic gross, and $1.13 billion worldwide. Brie Larson will return as the titular hero, also known as Carol Danvers, from a script by Megan McDonnell, a story editor on Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney Plus series “WandaVision.”

DaCosta is the fourth woman, and the first Black woman, to direct a Marvel Studios picture, following Boden, Cate Shortland (“Black Widow”), and Chloé Zhao (“Eternals”), part of Marvel Studios’ continued push for broader inclusion in its top creative positions.

The 2019 indie “Little Woods,” starring Tessa Thompson, launched DaCosta’s career, helping land her the job of directing the new “Candyman” movie for producer and co-writer Jordan Peele. That film was originally slated to open in June, but has been pushed to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June, DaCosta released a stunning shadow-puppet preview of “Candyman” that underscored how her film drew from, in her words, “the intersection of white violence and black pain.”

The “Captain Marvel 2” director’s chair was highly sought-after, even amid uncertainty about how tentpole productions with major stunts and massive crews can operate in a pre-vaccine COVID-19 world. Variety has learned that among the other directors approached for consideration were Olivia Wilde (“Booksmart”) and Jamie Babbit (“But I’m a Cheerleader,” “Russian Doll”).

The film is currently scheduled to open on July 8, 2022.

Deadline first reported the news about DaCosta.

Interesting. I don't think I've seen any of her films yet.
