As the coronavirus pandemic continues to force people to adapt to new norms, a local martial arts academy reopened after a three-month shutdown and has 70 students training to compete in a virtual national competition next weekend.

Melissa Gerhardt of Budokai Academy of Martial Arts in Middletown said her standalone academy has the largest number of competitors in the national competition while another academy with nine locations in the Cleveland area has the next-highest total of students competing.

She said her students in the competition range in age from 7 to late 50s and some have won national titles in the past.

“The team has been training hard and it is a huge accolade to compete and win in this competition,” she said.

She said instructors have to wear masks at all times but that is optional for students competing. Gerhardt said the competition team fights in events locally, regionally and nationally. Because of COVID-19, all of those events were cancelled this year. However, the Amateur Athletic Union for Taekwondo is holding a virtual nationals competition event next Friday and Saturday.

While there is no sparring in a virtual competition, students will compete in several breaking, forms, and weapons events for a national title.

Gerhardt said the breaking event includes competitors breaking 15 boards in the fastest time. The competitors perform skill in the weapons event that includes nunchucks and bow staves, and the form event is a demonstration of the competitors' execution of moves.

She said judges will watch two competitors at a time and determine the winners. The competition is “one and done” in which the winners advance to the next bracket, Gerhardt said.

“Our athletes are very excited to be a part of this and is definitely something positive during this pandemic,” she said.

The top four black belts who win gold at the national competition will have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the national team and participate in AAU competitions, Gerhardt said.

The local academy is affiliated with Kayla Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo who is now a PFL MMA champion and trains there when she is in her hometown of Middletown. It has 200 students, and there are many families training, she said.

“It’s fun and it’s more of a family sport ... everyone is on the mat here,” she said. “People can socialize and some have a goal of becoming a black belt.”

Last year, Gerhardt and her husband Rob opened the Middletown location at 1725 Yankee Road after outgrowing their previous location in Fairfield Twp. She retired as a sergeant with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office but recently returned as a part-time deputy/school resource officer.

The school offers Tae Kwon Do, Olympic Sparring, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Cardio Kickboxing, making it what Gerhardt said is “the only martial arts school in the Tri-State that offers all these arts under one roof.”

The 2020 Tiger Claw Elite Championships were postponed due to the pandemic. In lieu of this, the 2020 Tiger Claw Elite KungFuMagazine.com Online Championship (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/info/tournament/2020TCECP.html) is a socially distant championship happening over the KungFuMagazine.com’s YouTube channel (36.9K subscribers) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTYKTOidUiA).

The 2020 Tiger Claw Elite KungFuMagazine.com Online Championship is different than the online tournaments have been held already. This is a Grand Championship event, limited to 30 competitors per age bracket so there will only be 150 competitors max. All the competitors’ videos will be showcased on KungFuMagazine.com’s YouTube channel over the course of five weeks, one week per age bracket. First, Second and Third Place Trophies will be awarded for four different style divisions – Traditional Kung Fu, Songshan Shaolin, Modern Wushu and Tai Chi/Internal for all five age brackets. Additionally, a trophy will be awarded for a Grand Champion across the four style divisions for each age bracket, as well as a People’s Choice award (the competitor that receives the most views during the competition window).

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Children across the world kicked their way through a virtual competition Saturday that was hosted by a martial arts school in Louisville.

Eight teams from Korea, China, Alaska, New York, Atlanta and Louisville competed in the virtual competition hosted by Hwang's Martial Arts School. The competition benefitted the Jung Hwang Legacy Foundation.

Several teams have been working over the past few weeks to bring their world class taekwondo demonstrations to the competition. Each team had seven minutes to perform in front of judges, who then gave them feedback and points.

"Some of the criteria the judges are looking for our team spirit, team work, martial art technique, entertainment along with enthusiasm," Mimi Hwang, the director of Hwang's Martials Arts said.

The top three contestants went home with prizes up to $1,000.

Akari Tachi, a 13-year-old junior high school student from Ishikawa Prefecture, became the girls U-14 champion in the World Capoeira Federation’s U-18 online solo competition on Jan. 9.

“I hope to continue competing in capoeira and become infinitely cool,” said Tachi, a first-grade student at Matto Junior High School in the city of Hakusan.

Capoeira — dubbed the “beautiful martial art” because of its movements combining martial arts and dance — is said to have been developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil in the 16th century in an effort to secretly learn self-defense skills while appearing to be dancing.

Players practice a flow of movements in a circle formation, using the whole body, to the tune of music — such as songs and drum performances — while performing acrobatic motions such as kicks. Punching is prohibited.

Tachi, a member of Gueto Capoeira training gym in Kanazawa, began practicing capoeira when she was a first-grader in elementary school, influenced by her father, Toshihiko, 41, who also practices the martial art.

She said she was fascinated by the quick movements of capoeira when she first visited the gym. Tachi won the students’ national championship in 2017 and 2019.

“I’m attracted to capoeira because, compared with other martial arts, it has more freedom and many elements to enjoy,” she says.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world championship that began in November was held with participants invited to send video clips of 45-second performances. Eight competitors from Japan, Russia and Portugal took part in the girls U-14 tournament, for 12 and 13-year-olds.

In the third and final round where two players compete, Tachi performed 15 movements including au sem mao — an aerial cartwheel performed without using hands — and au batido — a one-handed handstand doing a side kick with one leg while keeping the other leg straight in the air — to become the champion.

Surprisingly, at school, she doesn’t belong to any sports clubs but is a member of the tea ceremony club.

“I can learn ways to control my mind” through tea ceremonies, she said.

Tachi’s next goal is to master a double twist, a technique that involves twisting her body twice in the air.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

For the second year in a row, the New England Championships will be an online event. Competitors will submit competition videos and then our qualified judges will score them.

This year, we are not shipping medals except by special request.

However, all competitors will receive a Certificate of Participation and Certificates of Award for all events in which they finish 5th place or higher, at no extra charge.

Age groups: 7 & under, 8-10, 11-13, 14-17, 18-39, 40-59, 60+

Experience levels: Beginning, intermediate, and advanced

Hosted by Chungcheongbuk-do and WMC, organized by WMC and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, the 2021 Online World Martial Arts Masterships, under the patronage of UNESCO, is the first online international martial arts multi-games held for the purpose of overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting a continuous exchange of global martial artists.

Under the theme of ‘New Challenge, Open World’, the event featuring 10 martial arts categories including official Olympics events, Judo and Taekwondo will be participated by 3,300 people from 100 countries. Martial artists from each country will demonstrate their forms for the respective category, such as Poomsae and Kata online, and the judges will also assess the forms and rank the participants online. The matches and judging will take place on the online platform established by the WMC and the match operation and all the events will be streamed live online.

The WMC Convention 2021 will also be held from October 28 to 30.

Following last year, the WMC Convention has also adopted the hybrid (online and offline) method this year and the program will consist of World Martial Arts Industry Fair, Academic Conference, World Martial Arts Leaders Forum, and the WMC General Meeting. All the programs of the WMC Convention will be live-streamed through its website and YouTube channel.

The WMC has attained an international status by being approved as a Permanent Consultative Member (PCM) of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) in UNESCO and as the code signatory of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and it is the first martial arts and sports organization in Korea to participate in the Sports for Climate Action of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Vietnamese athletes scored big at Online World Martial Arts Masterships 2021 that concluded Tuesday.
They clinched five gold, seven silver and four bronze medals in the five-day online event. Vietnam participated in Kurash, Judo and traditional martial arts.

The Kurash team grabbed four gold and one silver, the Judo team one gold and three silver while the traditional martial arts team won three silver and four bronze medals.

With 16 medals in total, Vietnam are ranked third at the event, while South Korea are first with 73 medals, followed by the Philippines with 23.

Online World Martial Arts Masterships 2021 aims to provide new opportunities for martial artists from all over the world during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event, hosted by World Martial Art Masterships Committee, welcomed over 3,300 participants from 100 nations, competing in 10 categories. Preliminary rounds occured from Sep. 1 to 30 while the main event took place from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2.

Brunei Darussalam wushu athletes produced a strong showing in the International Wushu Federation’s (IWF) Wushu Taolu Virtual Competition 2021.

The country’s top female practitioner Basma Lachkar led the way with a first category prize in the Taijiquan event after posting a score of 8.583 points and a second category prize in the Taijijian event with 8.303 points.

Her compatriot and fellow Southeast Asian Games (SEA) medallist Hosea Wong Zheng Yu emulated the feat of attaining a first category prize in the Taijiquan event with 8.173 points.

The quartet of Lim Yee Sean, Li Ziyan, Walid Lachkar and Abel Lim Wee Yuan also impressed in the international stage after earning good results.

The trio of Li Ziyan, Walid Lachkar and Abel Lim Wee Yuan also attained second category prizes in their respective events.

National wushu coach Li Hui expressed satisfaction with the performances of the four new athletes whose online appearances served, as good preparations for future international tournaments.

Leimapokpam Nelson Meitei representing Wushu Association of India finished second in the Jianshu Group B event of in the 2021 IWUF Wushu Taolu Virtual Competition being underway since October 27.
Meanwhile, Manipur's Jona Princie Konsam competing in the Taijijian Group B event secured third and Achom Tapas managed fourth place in the Daoshu Group B event, said founder secretary of Wushu Association of Manipur in a statement.
The competition will continue till November 3.

The competition received more than 3,000 entries from Wushu (Chinese Martial Arts) enthusiasts in China and 3 Baltic countries. The total votes exceeded 1.7 million, and the total number of visits to the official website exceeded 7 million. This competition covers a number of traditional Wushu including Changquan, Nanquan, and Taijiquan.
