In October of 1997 the first episode of Tiger’s Tale was published in the pages of Kung Fu Tai Chi (alternatively called Wushu Kungfu or Kungfu Qigong at the time) magazine. Some of you may even remember those back page features.

Two dozen years later The Graphic Novel approaches realization.

He was a rebel leader whose beheading did not keep him from leading his army.
Plus there’s a new comic at aTigersTale.com (https://atigerstale.com/blog/)

… just a secret origin of the universe in comics form.

When the artist you admire agrees to provide art for your project; that's something to be thankful for. When they offer additional art as prescription/inspiration - perhaps that project is on it's way.
or should I say 為?

You see, on the advice of others, it had been suggested that I find an artist of some renown to provide an alternate cover for my project. With a growing number of martial arts themed comics appearing this year alone, several comic artists immediately came to mind, but in keeping with the hidden spirit of A Tiger’s Tale, I felt it was more important to offer a cover created in the tradition of shu-mo hua (水墨畫) ink-wash painting. At the top of that list of artist was our Grandmaster Tu Jin-sheng (https://www.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=317). Not only has he made available one of his painting for use as cover art (to be unveiled in a future post) for the A TIGER's TALE graphic novel, he generously provided this second painting. Part inspiration, part prescription: the painting he provided is his interpretation of the Shaolin Muscle Tendon Change Classic (Shaolin Yijinjing 少林易筋經) what I'll be calling The Original Workout in this piece on aTigersTale.com (https://atigerstale.com/yijinjing-the-original-workout/)

10925 (https://atigerstale.com/subscribe/)

Working in collaboration with Grandmaster Tu (https://mastertu.com/) we’ve printed a limited run of postcards using the Yijinjing artwork above as well as the secret cover art. Deluxe print are also in the works. Both will be made available to subscribers (https://atigerstale.com/subscribe/) first (who’ve already had a glimpse of Master Tu’s cover art), then they will be offered to our general audience in the new year; Chinese New Year.
The subscribe it free (https://atigerstale.com/subscribe/) and comes with all sorts of extra features.

2022 Make More Comics Grant Announcement

PATTERSON, California - The Make More Comics Arts Grant is proud to announce the winner of the 2nd Annual MMC Grant. Out of all the qualified submission packets we received the judging panel has chosen Patrick Lugo and his continuing comics project A Tiger’s Tale, Vol. 1 as our 2022 award recipient.

A Tiger’s Tale, Vol. 1 is an epic kung fu fable in the grand tradition of A Journey to the West, Usagi Yojimbo, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The story focuses on Kan, a boy who only ever wanted to live in his forest as a tiger should. When his mother adopted two human foundlings, his jealousy cost him his home. Exiled, Kan blames humans for his troubles but learns that he must help his brothers protect humanity from an invasion of creatures from the realm of myth: monsters, deities, and dragons.

”I learned to read English sitting on my father’s lap as he read to me from the comics I had borrowed from my older brothers. Those formative experiences crafted a life-long passion for a medium which continues to open unexpected doors. It’s because of this that I seek to express my heartfelt gratitude to 100% Comics and the MMC Arts Grant Committee’s esteemed members for, not just the investment represented by the 2022 MMC Art Grant, but the acknowledgement of an inspiration I’ve held for years; that there is a readership awaiting what can be found in the pages of A Tiger’s Tale, Vol. 1.”

For more information on Patrick Lugo, you contact him and purchase his work at PLUGOarts.com (http://PLUGOarts.com)

The Make More Comics Arts Grant was founded in 2020 by Will Hoffknecht of Patterson, California with the goal of providing direct cash payments to support new and creative works in small press comic creation. The 2022 award is the second award granted and news about the 2023 grant will be announced later this year. For more information visit Makemorecomics.com (http://Makemorecomics.com).

I recently interviewed the legendary comic artist Geof Darrow, mastermind behind the extraordinary comic book: The Shaolin Cowboy and concept artist behind such films as The Matrix. Our zoom conversation ran way longer than expected and made the perfect reason to revive my February TIGER TALK (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N1Y1qvVm2g&list=PLrLokCB_F9BZPu9flvojfS4_vXY6Stk1i) interview series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urlEpt9ct3g

Part 1 of our formal interview appears on KungFuMagazine.com tomorrow June 22, 2022: there, we discussed THE MATRIX, Jet Li, and pioneering martial arts themed comic books. But over the course of that interview we also had some informal conversations about early influences, favorite Kung Fu movies as well as some real-life martial arts heroes (and villains?)...

Our Kickstart.aTigersTale.com campaign offered a special backer tier for six intrepid backers willing to become the Wuxia hero they were destined to become!

Using photo reference of their likeness was only the beginning. I reached out to each of them directly to learn what style of martial art and maybe preferred weapon their Wuxia character will specialize it. Utilizing decades of experience directing photo-shoots with some of the most renowned Kung Fu Masters in the world insured the perfect Kung Fu stance!

They each received a one of a kind full color print suitable for framing along with their signed copy of the graphic novel.

A Tiger's Tale volume 1 was featured at the 32nd Annual Children's Book Illustrator Exhibition at the SUn Gallery in Hayward California. An Artist's Reception and book signing took place just this past Saturday. It was my first in-person appearance as a creator (rather than journalist or whatever) in a number of years. In many ways I welcomed slipping back into the groove of “party-mode,” being in the right place at the right time, remembering names and faces.

Of course, there were plenty of new names and faces. Some who I’ve been fortunate to meet over the online various online events which have become the norm. The chance to deepen those connections and even sign a few copies of A TIGER’s TALE vol. 1 was welcome and well worth celebrating.

As evidenced by the 2022 Make More Comics grant (https://atigerstale.com/2022-mmc-grant-recipient/) and its reception at the Sun Gallery (https://atigerstale.com/recorded-live-at-the-sun-gallery/), A Tiger's Tale volume one continues to speak readers of all ages. We've recently added a reviews section to aTigersTale.com (https://atigerstale.com/) which remains open to all. Let me share with you a recent review written by a young reader (age 14) from overseas:

"It is the best and most thrilling comic I have read! The colour’s go so well with the story, and draw you in from the first page, al the way to the very last one! The way it has been written, is amazing!"

Added to that, our #TigerTuesday blog (https://atigerstale.com/blog/) just posted the second in a series of three poetic reviews like no other. Reader/Writer C.M. Darensbourg (https://www.instagram.com/cat.darensbourg/) has written three poetic meditations on characters and events depicted with-in the pages of A Tiger's Tale volume 1. These are truly inspired written works which I'm honored to present.

Over the past couple of weeks I've been exploring one of the original naming conventions for the characters of A Tiger's Tale. Namely, the I Ching (https://atigerstale.com/bagua_i-ching/) –

We've covered

Kan: Tiger Prince (https://atigerstale.com/tiger-leaps-the-abyss/)

Chen: Thunder Fist (https://atigerstale.com/chen-the-thunder-of-the-bagua/)

This is Truth, though Yojimbo has a decades long head start. It's a good thing our Kung Fu Tiger has been around since the 90's and is now finally getting some recognition

Most of my summer of 2022 was devoted to fulfilling volume 1 of A Tiger’s Tale. There were, however, a handful of more free-lance type projects which could not be denied. Among them were a couple of short comic projects, tea labels and a very specific logo. 2023 marks the first Championship I was not personally involved in. Though some of my work was represented by the custom designed medals used to award champions. I’ve designed 100’s of custom medals and other awards throughout the years and The Tiger Claw Elite KungFuMagazine.com Championship medals have consistantly been among my most epic designs. I thought I would share the process behind one of our most elaborate designs.

Fulfillment for volume 1 of A Tiger’s Tale is about to begin. There are backers of my most recent campaign who’s books could be shipped before production on volume 2 is complete and we’ve I’ve decided June must include fulfilling obligations to backers waiting for volume 1 of A Tiger’s Tale.

Because I’ll be shipping copies out when the Month ends, I’ve decided to host a giveaway! I’ll ship a free copy of A Tiger’s Tale volume 1 to one subscriber of the Tiger Talk Newsletter (https://atigerstale.us6.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=36256263f437f5bf948608819&id=4ec65b153f).

No purchase is necessary. Deadline to subscribe will be #TigerTuesday June 27th 12:00pm noon PST. Then on #WuxiaWednesday June 28th I will randomly select one subscriber to reach out to for an address where they’d like a copy shipped. It’s at this point I’ll also ask if they would like their name announced in a follow-up newsletter update and/or a subsequent #tigertuesday blog post
