Why does the guy on the left side have his hand on his Master's thigh. Does anyone else find this kind of.....****erotic? Or at least disrespectfull. He is in the highest ranking position besides the master, but do they have to hold hands?

A photo of this type does seem to be a strange place to make any demonstration of physical affection, though. Perhaps there is some gestural custom that I don't understand which explains everything.
