If you have adobe Photo shop you can resize the size of your .JPEG's, .BMP's and use scanned pictures as well. you just have to change the image size. My avatar is actually a pic of me from a digital cam.
I know I'm a geek but hey that's how you do it.

I'm sure you could find a number of freeware programs that will let you resize an image, and save it as a small jpeg, or gif to use for your avatar. I'm at work, so I'm just using Photoshop.

Hey Ryu, check it out d00d:

http://www.bidforpower.com/forum/misc.php?s=&avatcat=16&action=showavatars#jump

Some street fightin' style avatars.
As you can see, that forum uses the same system as this, wich means that the maximum size of the avatars can be changed. When the admins are done with what they are fixing now, hopefully they will incrise the max size of the avatars :)

Anyway, lets vote for maximum size!!

I vote for 100x100.

Here's a page with a list of FREEWARE graphics/image editing programs. I don't know how good they are, you'll have to download and find out for yourself. I'm sure they should have instructions included.

Image Editing Freeware (http://download.cnet.com/1,10150,0-10077-106-0-1-1,00.html?filterQuery=true&os=&li=2&dlsize=)

The Freeware stuff usually isn't the best quality or most intuitive, but it's free. You can also download Shareware, or Commercial demo versions from the same site (Download.com), but you'll have to pay for those if you want to keep using them.

Someone on another thread mentioned a free program called "ACDSee", which I downloaded and used to shrink my avatar picture. Just search for "ACDSee" on the web, you can download a free 30 or 45-day trial version and use that to shrink your image to whatever size you want.

they can also be bigger than 50x50 if you can get them under 20k. that's how you do spiffy animations and whatnot.

I'm the ACDSee fan Nemo mentioned. I've been using the 3.1 program for more than a year now. You have an option to download these monthly ads...takes about a minute...and they "renew" the shareware. It's got stuff better than the expensive "Picture It!" Microsoft program I was foolish enough to buy before finding it.
Not sure how the new 4.0 version works, but I've been really happy with 3.1.

wu_de36,
I tried to go beyond the 50 X 50 pixel limit...got an image that was 1,900 kb, but it wouldn't work since it was bigger than 50 X 50. I don't think anything bigger than 50 X 50 works.

I read all 5 comics in the series. It was put in a book I got from the library. I still got it (Really dont wanna return it). It's now one of my favorite series of all time. Made me a fan of Darkhorse and Frank Miller.
