I was practicing my kata today and got a bit confused when I started to do my forms(Kata=Kenpo Karate, Forms=CLF). I realized that while I strike during karate techs, I tense my arm and most of my body. When I do my CLF, I am much more relaxed and use more twisting power. Understanding that one is more of a short system and the other is traditionally longfist, I can see the natural differences. In CLF there are also short range techs, though, yet the power again is more twisting. Training two similar hits using the different power theories, I realized that the Karate tensing has more of an instantaneous sting to it, but the looseness of the CLF strike creates a harder punch. Granted, I could probably train the "karate" strike for more power but the same holds true for the CLF punch. Any thoughts on this?

Do you have a firm grounding in either of those arts?
